Have Multiple Threads Run Through An Arraylist Of Object And Process Each Object?

Apr 30, 2009

I am trying to have multiple threads run through an arraylist of object and process each object. My problem is that each thread processes every object in the array.So they are not working together on the job. I made sample application to show my problem. I think the problem is somewhere in my ThreadSub() Here is the

Imports System.Threading

Sharing Object Over Multiple Threads?

Aug 4, 2010

I have an application that needs to perform a series of different actions at specific points in time.To do this I have a timer with various actions that occur in its tick event.One possible action is to send out a few messages via a serial port and then wait (between 1- 300 mins typically) for the next timer tick.Another possible action is to continuously toggle one of the control lines on the serial port until the next tick (again 1-300 mins).

In most instances, i'm happy for everything to run on the main thread, but in the case of toggling the line endlessly, I thought it better to give it its own thread.My problem is that for the new thread to use the Serial Port, it must open the port. Likewise, it must close it before the main thread can have it back.

Here are 2 code snippets

Private Sub activityTimer_Tick(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles activityTimer.Tick
Dim some variables here
activityTimer.Stop()
If speedThread.ThreadState = ThreadState.Running Then

One Routine To Handle Multiple Events In Arraylist Class Object

Oct 17, 2011

I want to use One routine to handle multiple events & i want to give the list class object to the routine handle clause in vb.net. Is it possible? I have 100 buttons on my web page & i want to handle click event of each button. I have same coding on each button but the only difference is that, which button is calling the event handling routine. So i want to make one sub routine for handling event of all my buttons.

I can solve this by writing each button name in the handles clause like - Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles ImgRCP_26.Click, ImgRCP_27.Click,. But it is so lengthy procedure. So that why i want to handle my button in the arraylist. How to do this?

VS 2008 - Error With Arraylist In My.Settings - Object Reference Not Set To An Instance Of An Object

Mar 14, 2010

The issue is when I try to add a new item to the ArrayList with the following code, it gives me an error:

vb Private Sub btnLabelAdd_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnLabelAdd.Click
Dim result As String = InputBox("New Filter Label:", "Label List")

[CODE]................

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to be doing with this. It's a new setting I just added and it's empty, so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it or not. Anyone know what's going on and what needs to be done to get it to accept a value and not want to be "initialized"?

Sync Locks - Manage Access To A Collection Object From Multiple Threads - Add, Update, Remove, Clear

Oct 20, 2009

I am considering a piece of code that will manage access to a collection object from multiple threads - add, update, remove, clear. OK ... so I have put a sync lock within each method, but what is not clear from the MS documentation is exactly how the sync lock is behaving. Is it locking the piece of code it wraps? Or is it locking the object? And if it is locking the object a private static object should lock out any code locked on the object within all instances of the object? i.e. if an add operation is underway, an update, delete or clear will wait for the lock to be released.

Finally, if I have multiple threads contending for the sync lock, how is the release managed? First come, first serve? random (from my p.o.v)? Is there a chance that two separate threads could blunder into 'locked' code simulataneously?

Add Object To Arraylist?

Oct 11, 2011

I'm having some trouble adding an object to an arraylist.

Basically the object has two properties (file id/name), but I can't figure out how to assign those properties. During runtime it errors out with public member on the object not found.

Private QueueList As New ArrayList
Public Sub Queue(ByVal FileName As String, ByVal FileID As Integer)
Dim QueueObj As New Object

[Code]....

I'd also like to know how I can do a loop on the arraylist and access the two properites on each record.

Flattening An Object Hierarchy Using A Shim Class - Initializing Derived Object Properties From The Base Object?

Jul 10, 2010

I am somewhat new to object oriented programming and am attempting to flatten a Linq object hierarchy by using a shim class.how to initalize a derived class with property values from a base class?I have two objects, a base object with about 100 properties, and a derived object which inherits from the base object and adds a few additional properties beyond those of the base object. My simple constructor creates the derived object, but I am looking for a way to initialize the derived object properties with values from the base object.Right now I am using reflection to iterate over the properties individually and I suspect there may be a better way. The following example shows my shim class constructor for the derived class, and two properties:

newProperty1 - a new string property of the derived class

flattenedProperty2 - a new string property of the derived class, copied from a 2nd-level object of the base class

Code example:

Public Class derivedObj
Inherits baseObj
Private _newProperty1 As String[code].......

Is this the correct constructor approach to flatten the object hierarchy using a shim class? My second question relates to initialization of properties in the derived class. The constructor above creates the derived object, but what is the best way to initialize the derived object properties with values from the base object? The following code uses reflection to iterate over the properties individually, but I suspect there may be a better way.

Code example:

' property names are in the string array fieldNames

'baseObjQuery is an ienumerable of baseObj

'derivedObjList is a list of derivedObj[code].....

Is there a simple way to initialize values for the properties in the derived object based upon the values of the common properties in the base object?

My object is Fixture which represents a light. My light has the following properties:

Name, isMover, HighlightValue, UserNumber, Channels.

Channels is a dynamic arraylist which lists all the different channels of the fixture. A channel could be the lights colour or its intensity. A channel has the following properties:

Slots is the same again, breaking down to another ArrayList with more details.

Sorting Objects In Arraylist By One Of The Object's Properties?

Aug 30, 2011

I have a group of objects stored in an arraylist. These custom type objects have a number of properties from their underlying class . I want to use one of the properties to sort the array. I cannot determine which Array.Sort method to use.

I want to sort based on an integer property. Virtually every example I can find involves sorting strings.

So, assume the Objects have the following properties.

Obj.name as string
Obj.ID as integer
Obj.Alive as boolean

The objects are kept in an arraylist called FriendsOfMine.

I want to be able to order the list by Obj.ID, both ascending and descending in value.

Sorting A List Based On An ArrayList Within A Custom Object

May 24, 2010

I am using a list to keep track of a number of custom Row objects as follows:

Public Rows As List(Of Row)()
Row has 2 properties, Key (a String) and Cells (an ArrayList).

I need to be able to sort each Row within Rows based on a developer defined index of the Cells ArrayList.

So for example based on the following Rows

Row1.Cells = ("b", "12")
Row2.Cells = ("a", "23")

Rows.Sort(0) would result in Row2 being first in the Rows list. What would be the best way of going about implementing this?

Multithreading - .NET 4.0 Execute Multiple Threads But Threads Are Completed Before Resuming?

Oct 19, 2011

I just had a new, last-minute idea on to take on a task, so I am running to StackExchange for quick help.

What I want to do is execute a series of methods right in a row, each in their own threads. I want the application to wait until all of these threads are completed, after which the program will resume. It also has to use managed threading (thread pool).

What quick examples could you provide to help me along the way? If it's too complex, what things should I know about so that I can Google it on my own?

Get Object Information In A Running Process?

Jul 9, 2010

I have a vb.net application which runs as a service. I also have another Windows application that serves as the service interface.In brief the service watches some folders for new files and imports them into various databases. In the service I have an class called 'importFile' containing basic properties such as 'FileName' and 'ImportStatus'. With each new incoming file I create a new instance of 'importFile' and add it to a list object called myFiles which is of the type: List (of importFile).Currently in my service im writing a few object details (such as ImportStatus) to an XML config file which is in turn read by the service interface application. I want to expose more information from the service to the interface, and communicating via xml doesn't feel like its the most efficient method.My question is how do I expose live objects, such as 'myFiles' in my service to my interface application? I think this can be done via the Process class but all my efforts have so far failed.I'm thinking that the solution may look something like the following, but im not too sure what im doing and could be way off:

System.Process.Start And TextBox Object?

May 4, 2011

I'm doing, well trying anyway, a calculator that is well fitted for "us analogue/HAM Radio enthusiasts", with basic AC and DC formulas, and a search-engine.... And it's this search-engine that gives me a darn head-ace!I placed a TextBox object at the bottom of the form, and first I just had a Button and a Label, saying "try google?". And a LinkLabel and a Process.Start method.

Dim search As String
LinkLabel.LinkVisited = false
search = TextBoxSearch.Text
System.Diagnostic.Process.Start("IExplorer.exe", "http:google.com/", search)

And I then got in my head that it would be cool if I could add a second TextBox object and the user could simply type in the search-term and when the Process.Starter called i.e. IE6/7/8... would open google, and displayed the result of the search on google, in the browser..But how ever I try, I get only a browser to start with google's url or exception error, though I have a try/catch method ...What I want to achieve is a "google toolbar" on my calculator, I haven't yet learned how to use VB script and it's probably that which fault me..
