View 2 RepliesI'm designing a very simple program that will need to save both data and photos to a cd but my code refuses to let me do it. Here is what I have:
FileOpen(1, "E:FileWithData.dat", OpenMode.Binary)
FilePut(1, AString, 10)
I keep getting an incorrect function at FileOpen
I saw some methds which take numerous lines of code but I like to keep my code very simple so I can easily tell what it does.
I'm creating something that has save files. For the most part, it's just saving objects with 4 values.[code]...
View 3 RepliesI am trying to develop an application that will let me do the following
1) Be able to search to large binary files for a specific byte array (header) and to continue searching for another byte array (footer). Then i want it to copy the section of the binary file between these 2 locations to a specified file. Then the program is to continue searching for any other header/footers An example would be search a large file and carving out the jpgs it finds etc. This routine would have to be able to handle raw images of 20gb or more if needed.
What do you think what is faster:
1. writing 1000 records in a binary file on a server? or
2. passing the same 1000 records in a database on a server?
and
1. search a specific record in a binary file? or
2. search the same specific record in a database file?
I have been googling this and have not come along a working solution for an entire day. I don't know anything about binary data types (as I've never knowingly used them) and I'm trying to write a binary value that I see in the registry, to the registry. Now, all I see is the following [shown below]... and if I try to pass that as a string to the RegSetValueEx in the WinAPI and of course it errors out...
I do not know what 'numbers' I need to pass into the lpData As Any, argument of RegSetValueEx (i tried a bit array) in order for it to come out as the following [shown below] in the regedit. I really have no idea, and my tests to place random numbers in the bit array just produce corresponding random "figures" as visible in regedit that I do not understand how to 'tie' them together logically. here is the culprit!

I am using VB 08 running an openfiledialogue wanting to get the result of the GDS file (*.gds) to be the default extension at the drop down menu instead of All file when the openfiledialogue box opens.
I coded it with:
OpenFileDialogue.Filter = "GDS File(*.gds)|*.gds|All files|*.*"
but the results i get in the open file dialogue box remains as all files being in the drop down menu as the default file extension. How to i set it to ".gds" format?
I have these files [code]...
How can I use code to put all data from these files to a new file for searching purpose?
how do you save data stored in an array of records (structure) to a text file using StreamWriter? I currently have
Private Sub btnSaveToFile_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnSaveToFile.Click
Dim sw As New StreamWriter(New FileStream("EmployeeDetails.txt", FileMode.Create, FileAccess.Write))
For Each record As EmployeeType In employees
[code]....
but it doesn't work. My array is fixed and currently has 3 elements (for testing purposes). If I enter two records and add these to the structure I get the following data saved to the text file:
123,helen,66000
879,john,89975
0,,0
How do I stop unused elements of the array being included when writing to file? Should I use a dynamic array instead and if yes, how do you use dynamic arrays with structures?

The problem is that if I save a file I get "myfile.GDL" if I overwrite that I get a new file "myfile.GDL.GDL" ect.the other problem being that the filtering in the windows save/open dialog wont show .GDL files unless I select "all files".
I am using this code to to generate a crystal report from aa sql string that i construct using a supplied table name and some column names in txtSQL.This code contains functionality to export to ms word.However when the save dialog comes up and the user enters the intended filename.and saves the document.when the user attempts to open the document they have to use"open with" because the save dialog does not add an extension to the file so my question is how can i add an extension for tthe user programmatically.This is my first time using save dialog

View 1 RepliesI have an external hard disk drive for data backup purpose. Now I want to delete all mp3 files in that drive. How do I do it?NOTE: The mp3 files are contained within many nested folders. View 4 RepliesI'm at present looking at various ways on how to convert files without any extension and making them with a .txt extension. At present, I'm using the RENAME feature within windows to do this, but i takes time when there are a lot of files to rename. Can anybody give me a few pointers on how this can be done using Visual Basic?
View 3 RepliesI have a program that processes files in a special subdirectory and the program processes the files based upon the "Type", i.e., "Text Document". If an application, such as a text editor, installed onto the system, the "Type" may change to suit that application. For example, I recently had one change the type from "TXT File" to "UltraEdit Document (.txt}". Yes, the squirrely brace was on the end, don't know why. Well, after this app was installed, my program found no files of "TXT File" type to process even though the subdirectory was full of filename.txt files.
So, how can I get the code to look at the file extension, not the Type? A few lines of the code are shown:

I have to read SGI Files (I belive it's Suns Raster Image files, they have .rgb extension,but contains no header information), scale it, rotate it and maybe apply anti-aliasing filter to resampled image.I am just trying to read the image file. I read the file in byte array using FileStream and trying to display it in a image box, but it is throwing error while creating Bitmap class from the byte array. My code looks like this:
csharp
string imgpath = "Images\sample1_400x400.rgb";
System.IO.FileStream fs = System.IO.File.OpenRead(imgpath);

I have a VB.NET program with a SaveFileDialog control with the filter set as ".asx|*.asx|.m3u|*.m3u" (without the quotes). It works fine to save a file, but if I then try to save a file with the same name of an existing file and then change the extension in the save as type box, it still thinks I want to save the file as the existing file and asks to overwrite the file, disregarding the newly selected file extension.
I have tried setting the SaveFileDialog.FileName = Nothing after saving a file, so the Save File Dialog Box the File name box is empty, but then I like to click the existing file to get the file name I want, then select a new extension and try to save, but it still asks to overwrite the file with the other extension.
I hope my situation is clear and sorry if it has been already asked a million times...but can anyone point me in the right direction or tell me how I can save the file with the currently selected extension, not the previous selected extension when the file name was entered?
Code:
If SaveFileDialog.ShowDialog = Windows.Forms.DialogResult.OK Then
If Path.GetExtension(SaveFileDialog.FileName) = ".asx" Then

I'm trying to save a binary file stored in a SQL database with a SaveDialog, the function RetrieveFile retrieves the specified file from the database as a Byte array, here's what I have so far:
Private Shared Function RetrieveFile(ByVal filename As String) As Byte()
Dim connection As New SqlConnection("Data Source=SERVERSQL2008;Initial Catalog=NorthPole;Integrated Security=True")
Dim command As New SqlCommand("SELECT pcfFile FROM Items WHERE pcfFileName=@Filename", connection)
command.Parameters.AddWithValue("@Filename", filename)
connection.Open()
[Code] .....
Files are saved as "SqlDbType.VarBinary" within the database.
I get: "Index was outside the bounds of the array." on:
Dim retrievedBytes As Long = reader.GetBytes(1, startIndex, buffer, 0, ChunkSize)
The MemoryStream appears to not be retrieving the data yet the SQL syntax is correct.

How to save binary file to database. Ineed to save files into database. I cant find why it is not working...
This is my code:

I need to add some information to a PDF (Trim Box proporties, actually replace Media Box proporties with Media Box and Trim Box proporties), and I dont have the support in my PDF-motor. So I found out that I can use Notepad++ to open the PDF as a text file and simply add the Trim Box properties as a string and save it. Now I want to do it automatically with vb.net. When I use Stream Reader/Writer the PDF gets destroyed and loses information (Stream Reader dont read all the NUL, SOH, STX etc. I guess). I tried to read the PDF using ReadAllBytes/WriteAllBytes and then it works good, but then I don't know how to replace "Media Box ..." with "Media Box.Trim Box.". I try to use IndexOf but I can only search for single Byte not the whole string. I'm not good in binary and thats perhaps the problem :-). Does anyone have a better way doing it or how do I search for my string "Media Box" in binary?
View 3 Repliesi have been trying to search a specified directory and all sub directories for all files that have the specified file extension. However the inbuilt command is useless as it errors up and dies if you dont have access to a directory.

However i get an "System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object." when i try to access the data stored inside the filelist string array.
