Our company developed a tool developed in Visual Basic and VBS using Visula Studio 2005. The tool was deployed on Windows XP platforms. Now the new requirements for the tool are to support both Windows XP and Windows 7 64-bit I wonderif anyone can share which version of Visual Studio should we use.

I have embedded the WMP control in my Visual Studio 2010 app which works on windows 7 (Framework 4.0), but installing the app on winXP, I get the following error:

I guess this is a reference issue, but I have added references to WMP libraries (axinterop.wmplib.dll and interop.wmplib.dll). The WMP works on the XP machine, but not when called from my application.I have searched the web now for 5 days and changed references, and reinstalled the media player on the XP machine, but nothing works.

View 1 RepliesI developed a small application which accesses a MS access database on my computer using VB.net. I developed the program on windows xp 32 bit. At the moment I am using windows 7 64 bit and the program simply will not run. I get a null reference exception when I try to do anything to the database. I have narrowed this down i THINK to the db provider. I was using Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; and tried using Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;. Neither seems to work. The path to my database is 100% correct. This is the error I am getting:
Null reference exception was unhandled.Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Like I say the program runs fine on the windows xp machine. If it helps the access database file extension is mdb.
My project is made in VS 2008.
It works fine in Windows 7 but now we are trying to migrate to windows 8 .
I have set up VS2008 on Win8 and now debugging how it works.

I am new to VB programming, I am writing a windows program in visual basic using visual studio 2008. I need to create a report using the reporting features in visual studio. I am using the report.rdlc to design the report and for the data to go into.
The data I need to display is from several different sql querys in a data source. That have different parameters passed into them every time a button is clicked on my program. So far i have created several data sources and linked this to the report.rdlc and the data seems to be appearing. However the way i have done seems so long and not complicated that I think there must be an easier way and less messy.
So I am looking for advice on how to make a report that is less messy to the way I have done it. The steps I have is that I have either a store procedure or several sql querys that will have different parameters each time and this will then populate my report when a button is clicked to view a report.

I have been struggling with this - the PrintForm utility in the Powerpack only prints the displayed portion of the current form.
I spent a lot of time creating a process which loops through each control on my form, converts to a bitmap, and drops it on the print document, only to finally discover that the RichTextBox control (which I used extensively) does not include a functional DrawToBitmap method.
I have already researched various ways of managing this, but if VS2010 will do it without jumping through the hoops then I'll spring for it like the sucker I am.
I can do this in Access and VB6, I believe, so I don't think this is an unreasonable expectation.
i have installed visual studio 2010 32 bit on my new computer which have windows 7 64 bit. Everything seems ok. But now I try to learn how to draw some spheres with movement. I have tried to install openGL2 but it does not work or said that it does not fit with 64 bit, or it works only with VC.

View 5 RepliesI am trying to make a web application in VB.NET using Visual Studio 2008 that will accept login credentials and compare them with an Access database for authentication/validation. I found lots and lots of examples for how to do this with a Windows Form App, but none with a ASP.NET Web App. tried to modify the steps for a web app but I'm not sure how to make it work. The database connection is good and the query seems to work fine. Here's where I'm having trouble. In the tutorial, he says to use:

No matter what I put in for the username and password (as long as they are valid values) I always get a "success," never a failure. I know my query is working right because I put a gridview on the page and bound it to the result from the query; when I type in a user/pass that is not in the database the gridview is blank, when I type in a correct user/pass the gridview displays that row from the database.
What can you suggest on how to make a CMS quiz in visual studio (Winforms). It is possible in WinForms alone?
View 3 RepliesWith several forms of mine, I occasionally run into the following issue: I edit the form using the designer (Visual Studio 2008, Windows Forms, .NET 2.0, VB.NET) to add components, only to find out later that some minor adjustments were made (e.g. the form's size is suddenly changed by a few pixels), and controls get deleted. This happens silently — event-handling methods automatically have their Handles suffix removed, too, so they never get called, and there's no compiler error. I only notice much later or not at all, because I'm working on a different area in the form.
As an example, I have a form with a SplitContainer containing an Infragistics UltraListView to the left, and an UltraTabControl to the right. I added a new tab, and controls within, and they worked fine. I later on found out that the list view's scrollbar was suddenly invisible, due to its size being off, and at least one control was removed from a different tab that I hadn't been working on.
Is this a known issue with the WinForms Designer, or with Infragistics? I use version control, of course, so I can compare the changes and merge the deleted code back in, but it's a tedious process that shouldn't be necessary. Are there ways to avoid this? Is there a good reason for this to occur?
One clue is that the control that was removed may have code (such as a Load event handler) that expects to be run in run time, not design time, and may be throwing an exception. Could this cause Visual Studio to remove the control?
If I build a Windows Forms project in Visual Studio 2008, and start it with a Sub Main instead of a form, and for the time being, don't show any forms, is it considered a Console application? Will console.writeline work?

I'm trying to build a setup program using the built-in Visual Studio Installer. I'm using VS 2010 and working on VB.NET.For the most basic kind of program, I have an EXE file which works on a XML file (the XML file is treated like a database). So on a Windows 7 platform with UAC enabled, the best deployment is to install the EXE file in the Program Files folder, and the XML file in the application data folder, for security purposes of Windows. (Windows, now, does not allow creating/writing files inside the Program Files folder unless your application is running with administrative privileges).
So I have added VS Installer to my current project and have opened its File System Editor. So to create the above layout, I've added Primary Output to the Application Folder. Then I've added its shortcut to the User Desktop.Now I need to place my XML file to the application data folder. VS Installer gives the option of User's Application Data Folder, which is the %appdata% folder in the environment table. I need to access the All Users' Application Data Folder.
1) How do I access the All Users' Application Data Folder over here?
2) I tried using the User's Application Data Folder. It doesn't work. It doesn't create any folder in the %appdata% (e.g. C:UsersFarazAppDataRoaming). I tried to play around with various properties, like AlwaysCreate which is supposed to create a folder obligatorily. It doesn't create anything.
i've been stuck on this for a while and searched many forums first with no solution so i'm posting myself. In VB for excel i've used Screenupdating= false to disable the screen updating however now i'm creating a visual studio 2010 windows forms application and its not showing up as a property.
