I've started using the FormView control to enable two way databinding in asp.net webforms. I liked that it saved me the trouble of writing loadForm and unloadForm routines on every page. So it seemed to work nicely at the start when I was just using textboxes everywhere....but when it came time to start converting some to DropDownLists, all hell broke lose. For example, see:

is there a difference in performance when making properties static/shared that were instance properties before, maybe any locking mechanisms?There is a heavily used object in HttpCache which was accessible through a property in a page-instance(Service.aspx). Now i wonder if it would be better to make it static because the HttpCache is shared across the application anyway.

Is there a way to use INotifyPropertyChanged with auto-properties? Maybe an attribute or something other, not obvious to me.

For me, auto-properties would be an extremely practicall thing, but almost always, I have to raise the PropertyChanged-event if the property value has been changed and without a mechanism to do this, auto-properties are useless for me.
I'm going to resolve this bug as "Postponed" as we won't have time to do it for VS2010, but I'm definitely interested in your feedback going forward.
View 6 RepliesI recently finished a class that we're using to tie Access to some WCF Services. Of course this means that the .Net classes (and all of their properties) need to be visible to COM. Given that I'm using VB10 and the Contact class has about 20 properties I went ahead and used auto-implementing properties.Much to my surprise, the properties were not accessible from within VBA in Access. I tried marking the properties as ComVisible (which I didn't have to do in the past with standard properties) and it still didn't work. After changing the auto properties to standard properties everything worked.

My concern is that this could mess up things for those using VS2008. What would happen if someone using VS2008 needed to modify my class that made use of Auto-Implemented Properties? I am assuming that since everything compiles down to IL code then there would be no issue in binary compatibility. Though a problem would arise when editing source.
I have somehow managed to disable auto-implemented properties in my VS2010 IDE how to turn it back on. Almost every article on the internet loves to explain auto-implemented properties but doesnt give you the crucial option of how to turn it on or off.

View 3 Repliesim working on a little app for my self, to make my life a little more convenient. I have some media keys on my laptop, and I would like to use them with itunes while it is minimized. I found a app that did it for me a long time ago, but cant seem to find it now. But I would like to try my hand at my own, and I've managed to do so, but, my app has to be in focus for it to work. is there any way to still detect when these media keys are pressed while my app is out of focus?

View 2 RepliesI'm making a control and I am trying to finalize my design time properties grid. I have several List(of Class) items as public properties and when I click on the design time menu (while testing the control) there is the word "Collection" and a button with an ellipsis (...) that brings up a neat pop up with the buttons Add/remove and all of the public properties of the collection's class on the right hand side. Basically for a non-collection instance of a class (with public properties) I'd like a similar button to show up. I know I could put all of the properties in the main control class and group them, but I like the pop up box feature. Anyway to duplicate this? (think font grid item etc.)
View 3 RepliesIn the form design I set up a TableLayoutPanel, 20x20 cells and in cell (1,1) a PictureBox (called Target) containing the image of a small target. The properties box for Target shows some very promising properties, Column and Row - and if you overwrite the values in the properties box, the PictureBox obligingly shifts to the corresponding cell position in th design. However in VB it is not possible to refer to Me.Target.Row or .Column - neither appears during coding in the menu of properties, and deliberately coding either of them produces an error like
Error 1 'row' is not a member of 'System.Windows.Forms.PictureBox'.
1. Why does the properties box show properties that cannot be altered programmatically?
2. How can my program move Target around in the TableLayoutPanel?

View 3 RepliesI'm working on a Hazardous Materials label printing program. One of the options is to do an "NFPA" label. Since there are 4 values required with 4 or 6 options, the ratings are entered via radio buttons in a group box. That's working okay. I display values in the NFPA diamond as they're entered: left quadrant blue, top quadrant red, left yellow, bottom red. I'm having trouble with the label in which the rating will be displayed on top of a jpg diamond for the white. In this quadrant the text can be up to 4 characters. I can accept the text going into an adjacent block a little, but the corners of the label overlap into another quadrant/color. I reduced the font size which solved the overlap problem but the font is then too small and looks terrible. I tried to make the background of the label transparent to let the color come through correctly but that's not a valid value for label.background. I'm figuring that the transparent background is the best solution. What can I use that will accept a transparent background so the color shows through?
I'm trying to set the transparent property via label properties properties, not via code. Here's the code if it makes any difference:

All functions done, but the main function, the autorun and auto hide didnt work like i wish. for this keylogger, im using checkbox to make it autorun when windows startup and another checkbox to autohide. i already placed the codes but nothing happen. when i tick those checkboxes n restart my pc, nothing happen. is it because im using checkbox?

I am new to VB and am trying to get my webbrowser1 auto refresh on a web page every few seconds. Is there a way to program a button to do this? I am also trying to get the browser to auto select "yes" when a radio button is present and then auto click "yes" on a message box when it pops up. Any ideas where to start?

which, through the Call Stack, I found is called by the main window's InitializeComponent() method.Everywhere I've looked has told me that the corresponding static constructor in VB is just:Shared Sub New()
but this method is never invoked. Am I creating my VB static constructor right? Is it likely something else that has nothing to do with my static constructor?
I am writing a code for a webapplication in vb.net. I am using a shared variable in the vb code.
Consider the static variable value is 3 for a user who hits the web application. Again when another user hits the same web application, whether the static variable will be 3 again or whether he will have a separate value for static variable for his session?
This will probably be a basic questions for the LINQ & architecture experts however I am failing to understand a problem i've encounted when trying to update a 'Static ObservableCollection.

If I add a new Contact with the ContactType "Christmas List" to the ContactList ObservableCollection, Grid1 reflects the additional Contact however Grid2 does not reflect the change unless I rebind.
Anyway to Reflect the change in Grid2 to show the new Contact with the queried ContactType

Now, If I want to run a test using "Todays" Date using FitNesse, What would be the easiest way of creating a way to have (OurService).CurrentDate be static? We have a control that ads Days,Years, or Months to the current date.. and I would like to be able to test this.
