Override The = Operator And Have It Assume That <> Is The Opposite?

Aug 16, 2010

Why can't I just override the = operator and have it assume that <> is the opposite? Like, if I ask if A <> B, I mean if not (A = B). Straightforward, I would assume. Also, I can't think of ANY circumstance where <> wouldn't be the exact opposite of =.

Safe To Assume An Integer Will Always Be 32 Bits?

Jul 1, 2011

Is it safe to assume an int will always be 32 bits in C#? The linked question asks whether it is "safe to assume that an int will always be 32 bits in C#". The accepted answer states that "the C# specification rigidly defines that int is an alias for System.Int32 with exactly 32 bits".

My question is this: does this hold true for VB.Net's Integer? Is it safe to assume that Integer will always be an alias for int32?

.net - Opposite To A Structure?

Jun 29, 2011

I'm sure there is an answer to this somewhere but I'm clearly using the wrong terminology in my searches, so I apologise in advance for this inevitably being a duplicate.Take the function CType. Clearly I can cast (or at least try) a given object to a given reference type. The function will not work if trying to cast to a structure, i.e.CType(myObject, Integer)

will generate a compiler error. This I'm sure most often crops up when working with generics:

[Code]...

What is the opposite? I want only reference types so that CType doesn't fail. I can't overload the T As Structure with a plain T because it considers them identical signatures, so surely there's a keyword I'm missing somewhere?

How To Set Variable Opposite Value (3.5)

Apr 26, 2011

I can remember reading some time ago that there is some way to set the opposite value of a variable depending on the value that it is set to but, I can't remember the syntax of it and I'm not sure what the correct terminology is to describe what I'm looking for. Suppose that I have a boolean variable that can be either true or fule. I need to some way set the variable to the opposite value that is set.

Off of the top of my head it was written something like this (excuse the wrong syntax below, it's what I'm trying to figure out :-) ). Dim myBool as Boolean = False myBool = True : False I know this can be done with if else statements but I'm sure I've seen a more compact way to write it.

Opposite Of A With Statement (Multiple Objects)?

Aug 17, 2011

I'm wanting to to make a color scheme selection feature for my program, which involves changing the foreground and background colors of many components at once. I have the components divided into groups in which all elements should have the same background and foreground.

vb
With BtnLoad And BtnSave And TbxListname And CmbProgDifficulty And TbxRptStandard And TbxQNA And BtnAddProbQ .ForeColor = Color.White .BackColor = Color.IndianRed End With

The problem is that this get's an error message saying that you cannot use "And" (or & or +) in the statement. If I just use one object at a time,

vb
With BtnLoad .ForeColor = Color.White .BackColor = Color.IndianRed End With

it works fine. I have so many objects though, I don't really want to copy and paste this with statement 50 times. is there a way to make a with statement take multiple objects?

Why Does C# Set Private Variables Before The Base Constructor While .NET Does The Opposite

Mar 3, 2011

comparing C# code and VB.NET and the results between the seemingly identical code were entirely different.(Why C# is always winning over VB.NET?)The explanation given is that C# will initialize the class fields, then call the base constructor, but VB.NET does the exact opposite. Is there a technical reason for the languages to be different? At first glance, it seems that either approach is equally valid, but I can't fathom why they wouldn't have selected the SAME approach.

EDIT: As 'Jeffrey L Whitledge' has pointed out, VB6 did not have inheritance, so I don't think we can say 'to keep VB.NET and VB6 more closely related'.

Error: Option Strict On Disallows Operands Of Type Object For Operator '='. Use The 'Is' Operator To Test For Object Identity

Jan 27, 2010

I am tightening up my coding with the Option Strict set to ON. It has now produced alot of errors. An example of this is:

If AllocatedDGV.Rows(i).Cells("RoomNumber").Value = RoomsAvailableDGV.Rows(j).Cells("RoomName").Value Then

It gives me the following error: Option Strict On disallows operands of type Object for operator '='. Use the 'Is' operator to test for object identity.

Option Strict On Disallows Operands Of Type Object For Operator Use The 'Is' Operator To Test For Object Identity

Apr 6, 2012

I need to write an interface to get data to/from our data files.

We have a low level class that holds field values for each record read from the files.

This just holds two values, the value read from the file (DBValue) and the updated value that may need to be written back to the file (CurrentValue).

These values may be any of the standard value types (integer, date etc) or a string.

Either value (DBValue or CurrentValue) may be null if not defined.

I have written the class to manage this data which works fine while option strict is NOT on.

But we have an office policy of having option strict on all the time.

When I put option strict on, my object value comparisons fail with the error: "Option Strict On disallows operands of type Object for operator '='. Use the 'Is' operator to test for object identity."

Question, how should I change the following code to handle option strict on ...

This is all running on Visual Studio 2010

.net - Override A Class/add Properties To A ListviewItem?

Jan 12, 2010

I have a listview but I would like to add 3 properties (for example one of them is "image") to the listviewitems in it. I was fine with making a custom class with the 3 properties and just inheriting ListViewItem but now I need to use MultiSelect, so it means doing things like(in For Each loops):

ListView1.SelectedItems.Item(i).Image don't work because it returns a ListViewItem not my CustomClass. I could always do : Ctype(ListView1.selectedItems(i), MyCustomClass).Image

But using that over and over again seems like a waste/wrong way to do it?

.net - Override Variables Declared In A Class?

Dec 16, 2010

I'm trying to create a generic Controller Class for generic events. But these these events still need to access their class variable. So my idea is to create the Base Controller Class with a ModelBaseclass variable as _ClassVar, which is inherited by all of the other class Controller classes will derive from. But I want the derived controller classes to override the _ClassVar with whichever one they need.

I want to do this, so the ControllerBaseClass can have all the generic functions that all the Derived Classes would use.

Model :

Public Class ModelBaseClass
Public Overridable Function Foo() As String
Return "Name"

[Code].....
