Part of my project is to retrieve a string variable from an external source (google docs) and parse it. This string represents width and height. I have no problem retrieving, I just need to parse it in to two strings. The string has 4 variations.
Here are examples:
3"x4"
3"hx4"w
3hx4w
3x4
The width is always the first number and the height is always the second. Sometimes, the width and height have decimal points. Any way to parse this into two strings of the numeric values only?

I'm trying to create a valid RegEx replacement pattern for correctly formatting specific .XML file names. Specifically, if a file name does not begin with a prefix, let's say, ACE_. If the XML file name and extension does not begin with ACE_, prepend the string ACE_ to the file name. For example, if my input source string is the following:
Widgets.xml
I would like to execute a single RegEx Replacement that would result in the string being:
ACE_Widgets.xml.
Conversely, if the string already begins with ACE_, I would like it to remain unchanged. Also, how can I include the pattern ".xml" to ensure that the string pattern for the file name and extension ends with ".xml" in the same matching pattern for the RegEx Replacement pattern? As for the match, I have some luck with the following:
^ACE_{1}[dD]+
Which indicates there is a match for the pattern if the input string is ACE_Widgets.xml and no match if the string is Widgets.xml
The RegEx pattern would suffice, but if you need to know the language in which I'd like to use the replacement pattern is in .NET 4.0 in either C# or VB.NET.
The following posting is close to what Im looking for, but with the inclusion of the *ix directory path prefix, and the use of preg_replace() in PHP, I'm having a bit of a struggle getting it to work with what I need to do:
Regular Expression: How to replace a string that does NOT start with something?

I just want to parse simple expressions like IIF(FVAL(PFC) = TRUE, (IIF((ORGVAL(BAS, "2012/12/31") + ORGVAL(DA)) < 6500, (FVAL(BAS) + FVAL(DA)) * 12%, 780)), 0)`After parsing this I should be able to know what functions contains what parameters.
[Code]...
I'm stuck with .Net Framework 2.0, so no Linq or lambda expression goodies for me. Also I want to include the code in my custom library and not just reference it. Can anyone point me to some good library or code.
I just need to parse and not evaluate the expression and find what tokens are in use. After finding the tokens I need to change the expression string before parsing, like if the function ORGVAL is used then the parameter passed has has to be prefixed by an underscore. Like ORGVAL(BAS) will transform to ORGVAL(_BAS). Some functions can have tow parameters like ORGVAL(BAS, "2012/12/31") and this will transform to ORGVAL(_BAS, "2012/12/31")
NOTE: IF THERE ARE OTHER WAYS OF DOING IT PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I WOULD LOVE TO AVOID A PARSER AND LEXER.

I would like to be able to retrieve a substring in a string... I have a variable named htmlTAG that contains the contents of a webpage... I need to be able to get the text that is
search_type=reverseaddress" rel=nofollow>Text to retrieve... </A>
And store it in a textbox1, then go to next instance of that and get the text again... to the end and be able to exclude all instances that say "See full listing".

In VB.NET 2005, what is the best way to retrieve and parse HTML data from a URL, a bit like a search engine crawler?I am building an app, where I need to parse a website, and collate data from it (the website uses some tags that I could pull out to get the appropriate bits of data). I want to be able to do this in a thread, and just update a DB with the data, and give the client app a status update of the progress.

In order for my program to share information between users, the best method I could come up with is using e-mails.I have a way of sending e-mails with the appropriate attachments, but would love a way to automatically retrieve these e-mail attachments directly from the program, without the user having to go to their e-mail account, find the correct project e-mail, download the attachment and then put it in the correct folder.I had hoped that VB.Net would have a built in procedure for doing this, but it seems there's not really anything there.

I'm using the following code to retrieve a URL and then parse the HTML from the page:
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnStart.Click
Dim Temp As String, searchstr As String
[Code]....
I think my problem is that I don't exactly understand how I am supposed to start and end the parsing. I know that in my above code, the "meta" tag is the start and the chr(34), double quotes, is the ending.
When I modify my code, I have price line, which in th html ends with another character, the ">" sign. In the first code, the "content" tag doesn't end with another character, it just continues the line, which is easy and it works.

I'm writing some code that takes a report from the mainframe and converts it to a spreadsheet. They can't edit the code on the MF to give me a delimited file, so I'm stuck dealing with it as fixed width. It's working okay now, but I need to get it more stable before I release it for testing. My problem is that in any given line of data, say it could have three columns of numbers, each five chars wide at positions 10, 16, and 22. If on this one particular row, there's no data for the last two cols, it won't be padded with spaces; rather, the length of the string will be only 14. So, I can't just blindly have

As long as the delimiter was a unique specifiable character, this one-statement command could break it out into elements. my memory and point me in the right direction.

I have a Richtextbox where I select a number after a : with this code; For Each line As String In Richtextbox1.Lines Dim equalsPos As Integer = line.IndexOf(":") + 1 txtFound.AppendText(line.Substring(equalsPos, line.Length - equalsPos)) Next This is working ok, but the whole line.length is appended for number2. The line ex. Some text:my number some text-my number2. I want my number appended to txtFound, and my number2 appended to txtFound2. With my code only number2 can be appended correct.

Is there something I am missing to pre-check a string for a certain number of instances of a substring? Example.
"I am a test string, I will be searching this string later. I will be checking for every instance of the letter "i" and return the number of instances of that letter."
If I wanted to return an int for how many times i occurs in that string.

I have a field that I display via: String.Format({0:c},amount) This produces the string "$28.28" However, when I try to convert back to a decimal amount, I get an incorrect format exception: amount = Decimal.Parse(amount.Text, NumberStyles.Currency) I also tried it with NumberStyles.AllowCurrencySymbol with the same results. I verified that the value in amount.Text is "$28.28". Am I missing something? Shouldn't these two operations use the same currency symbol and formats?

I've got some code that creates a list of AD groups that the user is a member of, with the intention of saying 'if user is a member of GroupX then allow admin access, if not allow basic access'.
I was using a StringCollection to store this list of Groups, and intended to use the Contains method to test for membership of my admin group, but the problem is that this method only compares the full string - but my AD groups values are formatted as cn=GroupX, etc....
I want to be easily able to determine if a particular substring (i.e. 'GroupX') appears in the list of groups. I could always iterate through the groups check each for a substring representing my AD group name, but I'm more interested in finding out if there is a 'better' way.
Clearly there are a number of repositories for the list of Groups, and it appears that Generics (List(Of String)) are more commonly preferred (which I may well implement anyway) but there is no in-built means of checking for a substring using this method either.
I've settled on using a List(Of), and I've borrowed from Dan's code to iterate through the list.

What i am trying to do is basically type a word like "Hi" in the input box and produce the Morse Code equivalent in the Morse Code output box. [Code] This works but only one letter at a time. I need to be able to set the limit of the string length for certain fields. Is there an easy way to set the limit of the field so that if the string was larger then the limit then just take the substring and if smaller would add extra spaces?I was able to accomplish something similar to this with integers by just using .toString("00000").

I am making a change to an existing process. Currently the csv file (which can have embedded "," with the field in quotes), i being passed as an
IO.StreamReader parameter pStreamReader.
dim vLine as string = pStreamReader.ReadLine
dim vFields () as String = vLine.Split(","c)
Well ... obviously the split does not work with embedded commas in a field. Looked at TextFieldParser, but it is in the FileIO class and the module is passed a IO.StreamReader. Can it work?
Or how abour a RegEx? Does anyone have any suggestions? I have look around on the internet and it seems like a common questions with a bunch of wild goose chases.
