Passing Null Object() ByRef Returns Initialized Object()?
Dec 8, 2009
I am making use of a 3rd party dll and am encountering some strange behavior in VB, which doesn't occur in C# Perhaps someone can explain what is going on. Anyhow, I am making use of a method in this 3rd party library which accepts an array parameter ByRef. The end result is the variable should remain null after the method call, but it is returning initialized for some reason.

I have some code which gets child items for a menu via the GetChildren function which takes a list of menuData: Dim builtMenu As New List(Of MenuData)(_rawData.FindAll(Function(item) item.GroupingID = 0))
For Each menuData As MenuData In builtMenu
If menuData.Children IsNot Nothing Then
menuData.Children.AddRange(GetChildren(menuData))
End If
Next
If I check if menudata.children isnot nothing, it always is nothing because the GetChildren function is yet to run (providing the child items, which do exist). If I remove this check and just have this code:
Dim builtMenu As New List(Of MenuData)(_rawData.FindAll(Function(item) item.GroupingID = 0))
For Each menuData As MenuData In builtMenu
menuData.Children.AddRange(GetChildren(menuData))
Next
Then I am presented with a Object reference not set to an instance of an object error on menuData.Children.AddRange(GetChildren(menuData))

I have a function that accepts a String by reference:Function Foo(ByRef input As String)
If I call it like this:
Foo(Nothing)
I want it to do something different than if I call it like this:Dim myString As String = Nothing Foo(myString) Is it possible to detect this difference in the way the method is called in VB .NET?All the logic is in the second overload, but I want to perform a different branch of logic if Nothing was passed into the function than if a variable containing Nothing was passed in.

I have a class and method exposed to a client asp.net app. The class looks like
<DataContract()> _
Public Class Class1
Private v_string As String
Private v_integer As Integer
[code]....
The method is declared as
<OperationContract()> _
Function GetStuff(ByVal bar As Class1) As String
In the client code I create an instance of Class1 and set the values for v_string and v_integer, but using Wireshark to look at the xml being sent to the server only a value for v_string is being sent as part of Class1. I'm guessing this is because it considers the value of v_integer to be null/not set. Here is an example of the client code.
Dim MyService as New Service1.ServiceClient
Dim test as New Service1.Class1
test.P_integer = 1
[code]....
how different types are passed/used since Integer is a intergral type and String is a class, but can't seem to work out what to do to fix the problem.

I'm trying to setup a WCF web service to be consumed by JavaScript using JSON and jQuery.I've noticed that you can send JSON without a DataContract if the service method parameters match the naming structure of the JSON object:
<ServiceContract(Namespace:="http://foo.com/bar")>
<AspNetCompatibilityRequirements(RequirementsMode:=AspNetCompatibilityRequirementsMode.Allowed)>

Currently working on the status bar for application. I would like the status bar to display message errors if a user makes an invalid entry. I have a module which contains the main procedure and procedures to change the text property of my status bar. A Call is made to the procedures from one of the forms that requires the user input. The application compliles but I get an unhandled exception of type 'System.Null ReferenceException' Object reference not set to an instance of an object. [Code]

I've got a f(x) that returns a collection of user controls. .Net lets me just treat the f(x) name as the collection.

Private Function GetCcB() As Collection(Of Reports_ucColumn)
Dim cc As New Collection(Of Reports_ucColumn)
cc.Add(Me.ucColumn0)

If you pass the property of an object to a function ByRef, and the function doesn't modify the ByRef parameter, the property Set is still called.

How can I get the name of the object that was passed byref into a method?
Example:
Dim myobject as object
sub mymethod(byref o as object)
debug.print(o.[RealName!!!!])
end sub
[code]....
I'm using this for logging. I use one method multiple times and it would be nice to log the name of the variable that I passed to it. Since I'm passing it byref, I should be able to get this name, right?This would give you the parameter name in the method and it's type, but not the name of the variable that was passed byref.
using system.reflection
Dim mb As MethodBase = MethodInfo.GetCurrentMethod()
For Each pi As ParameterInfo In mb.GetParameters()
[code]....
If you put that in "mymethod" above you'd get "o" and "Object".

Why if you pass an object as byVal into a method is it then treated as if it were byRef? I know you're only passing the reference across when you pass an object variable but why doesn't VB force you to decalre the header as byRef?

I am somewhat new to object oriented programming and am attempting to flatten a Linq object hierarchy by using a shim class.how to initalize a derived class with property values from a base class?I have two objects, a base object with about 100 properties, and a derived object which inherits from the base object and adds a few additional properties beyond those of the base object. My simple constructor creates the derived object, but I am looking for a way to initialize the derived object properties with values from the base object.Right now I am using reflection to iterate over the properties individually and I suspect there may be a better way. The following example shows my shim class constructor for the derived class, and two properties:
newProperty1 - a new string property of the derived class
flattenedProperty2 - a new string property of the derived class, copied from a 2nd-level object of the base class
Code example:
Public Class derivedObj
Inherits baseObj
Private _newProperty1 As String[code].......
Is this the correct constructor approach to flatten the object hierarchy using a shim class? My second question relates to initialization of properties in the derived class. The constructor above creates the derived object, but what is the best way to initialize the derived object properties with values from the base object? The following code uses reflection to iterate over the properties individually, but I suspect there may be a better way.
Code example:
' property names are in the string array fieldNames
'baseObjQuery is an ienumerable of baseObj
'derivedObjList is a list of derivedObj[code].....
Is there a simple way to initialize values for the properties in the derived object based upon the values of the common properties in the base object?

I have some classes, BsfciFile and StudyFlashCard. Bsfci is the extension to which I save my set of flashcards in an INI format. I am currently working to transform my code from using Windows API calls to access the INI to using a IniFile class that I found on the internet. I would like the BsfciFile to have a Array of StudyFlashCard objects, but I would like the StudyFlashCard class to use the IniFile class object contained in the BsfciFile class. I can pass the IniFile from the BsfciFile class to the constructor for the StudyFlashCard class, but I want it to modify the same IniFile as the BsfciFile class has later on.

I occasionally find myself passing this or Me to a child object. Such as this condensed real-world example...
Public Class Entity
Private mValidator as New EntityValidator()
Readonly Property IsValid()[code]....
I'm concerned about .Validate(Me).I get no warnings or Code Analysis violations, but it just feels wrong. I get nervous about infinite recursion and garbage collection.

I am creating a procedure and would like to know if I can pass the name of a property. I.e ComboBox1 so I can change the properties of that object. What I have done is create a procedure to populate a Combobox from my MySQL database. What I want to do now is populate the relevant Comboboxes without having to create a new procedure specifically for each combobox. I can create a procedure for each Combobox but the whole reason for procedures and functions are to minimize repetitive code and to make code easier to manage.
At the moment my procedure is ProcedureName(ComboBox1, "DatabaseName", "DatabaseField").
What I want to be able to do is do
ProcedureName(ComboBox1, "DatabaseName", "DatabaseField1").
ProcedureName(ComboBox2, "DatabaseName", "DatabaseField2").
ProcedureName(ComboBox3, "DatabaseName", "DatabaseField3").

Hi
I've got a pretty general question about the best practice in passing an object reference to a Form in VB.NET. My form is a dialog and I've created an overload ShowDialog method, where I pass an Object into it ByRef.
The trouble is, I want to be able to refer to that Object throughout my dialog Class and not just in the ShowDialog method. For instance, some of my Events for controls on the form, need to reference that object.
I know I could create a local Private variable in the Class and assign it to the passed value, and then use that value. However I'm thinking this isn't very efficient because it would (I believe) create a new copy of the Object (which is a complex, large class in itself).

Is there simple way to SyncLock an object that can be null? And before you ask for it, yes, I know that it isn't logical to perform a SyncLock on a null variable. However, that would simplify my code because right now, I have no choice but to perform a null check all over the place before calling a SyncLock.

If I have a variable, X, of type SqlDecimal, that was instantiated without providing a decimal value parameter to the constructor, then the .IsNull property is True: Dim X As New SqlDecimal '.Value = Null..If I have a Stored Procedure that acepts a single parameter, @SqlDecimalParameter, of type Decimal, the value of this this parameter could be NULL or a decimal value. This is how I would normally call the stored procedure:[code]It seems like the 1st example should work. Am I missing something? after all, the Sql datatypes are designed to work with SQL Server, I thought.[code]I get the following error:Failed to convert parameter value from a SqlDecimal to a Decimal.It works when X.IsNull is True.How do you set the value of the PARAM object when it can be NULL?

I work with C# 99% of the time. However, I'm having to update some legacy VB.Net code and encountering an issue with VB.Net code syntax. The error that I get is "ByRef" is underlined and "Expected Expression" tag shows up when you hover over "ByRef". The "FooDetail.Load" function is written in C# and expects a List object passed as reference. Don't have any trouble using the same function in other C# classes. Can someone indicate what is wrong with below VB.Net code.
Dim FooDetail As New clsFooDetail()
FooDetail.FooID = FooID
Dim lstFooDetail As New List(Of clsFooDetail)
FooDetail.Load(ConnectionString, "Stored Procedure", ByRef lstFooDetail as System.Collection.List(Of(clsFooDetail))
