Null Check Always Returns Null, If Removed Returns Object Reference Not Set To An Instance Of An Object
Jun 24, 2010I have some code which gets child items for a menu via the GetChildren function which takes a list of menuData: Dim builtMenu As New List(Of MenuData)(_rawData.FindAll(Function(item) item.GroupingID = 0))
For Each menuData As MenuData In builtMenu
If menuData.Children IsNot Nothing Then
menuData.Children.AddRange(GetChildren(menuData))
End If
Next
If I check if menudata.children isnot nothing, it always is nothing because the GetChildren function is yet to run (providing the child items, which do exist). If I remove this check and just have this code:
Dim builtMenu As New List(Of MenuData)(_rawData.FindAll(Function(item) item.GroupingID = 0))
For Each menuData As MenuData In builtMenu
menuData.Children.AddRange(GetChildren(menuData))
Next
Then I am presented with a Object reference not set to an instance of an object error on menuData.Children.AddRange(GetChildren(menuData))

Dec 8, 2009I am making use of a 3rd party dll and am encountering some strange behavior in VB, which doesn't occur in C# Perhaps someone can explain what is going on. Anyhow, I am making use of a method in this 3rd party library which accepts an array parameter ByRef. The end result is the variable should remain null after the method call, but it is returning initialized for some reason.

Does a for each loop to check a sql string against the key words. If one is found it returns true, otherwise it returns false. This works perfectly on 99% of my web pages and class files, however, I have one page where I call the assembly and the loop only finds the first keyword and stops

May 25, 2012Regarding my college project. i'm working on a sales system . i have a form which consist of all the following information( item code , item name , item price , quantity of item ) which is display using a data grid . data input by user using text box and all this information will be stored in a database(sales database) i'm using ms access 2007. the grand total will be displayed in a text box . and amount paid will be input in a text box too , my major problem now is how to i create a reciept that will have all this information of the purcase. i have a reciept button . what the next step ? i dont have any idea how to get the reciept done.

May 14, 2010I'm creating an editable ListBox control, where the user can double-click an item to edit it. When double-clicked, I simply overlay a TextBox over the item, so the user can change the text and then commit it by pressing Enter or leaving the TextBox. The 'commit' is simply this:[code]where 'editingIndex' is the index of the item being edited, and 'textBox' is the TextBox object.If the ListBox contains strings, this works just fine. The item being edited is replaced by the textbox Text string.However, if the ListBox contains some other object (let's say a custom class), this is a problem! It still "works", in that it still sets the text of the item, but the item is no longer an instance of that custom class! It is now a String, and all other information about the item is lost. So, I really want to let the user be able to change the text representation of ANY object, without replacing the object with a string. Obviously, I cannot know how the object displays its text (well, by the ToString function of course, but I cannot know what the ToString function returns).Now, I am having a few ideas how to approach this, but none really work the way I want. I am pretty sure that I'm going to have to provide some kind of event that the user has to handle. I'm thinking something like this:
- When the item edit is committed, an event is raised
- This event contains the Item being edited (as an object, the user has to cast it himself), and the new text of the item.-
- The user handles this event, and assigns the new text to the correct property.
For the Person class, this could look something like this.My ListBox should raise this event, and assign the new item like this.[code]I think this should work (although I haven't tested it), but there's one problem with this approach:When the items are just strings, the user still needs to implement this event handler, while he shouldn't have to (I can simply assign the new text string to the item). So, if the user is simply using strings, he still needs to do this for every instance of my listbox:[code]So what I'm really looking for is a way so that I can implement the default behavior (for String items), and still allow the user to override this behavior if he is not using strings.I may be overlookihe obvious solution here, but I can't figure it out... Overriding is done when you inherit a class, but the user isn't going to inherit my custom listbox (well he CAN, but he shouldn't have to). He is just going to handle the event. And if he doesn't handle the event, my listbox uses the default implementation.

Jul 13, 2010In my application, I've built an object that communicates with an OPC server and whenever the value of a certain OPC item changes, it logs all the OPC items to a database. This all works beautifully. However, I'm having a problem with disposing of the instances of this class. Whenever I want to remove an instance of this class from the application, I'm dereferencing the object (objDevice = Nothing) and letting GC take care of the rest. I've inserted breakpoints and am monitoring to ensure that the object is dereferenced (it is).
Problem is, even after the object has been dereferenced and is CONFIRMED to be equal to Nothing, the object is still logging data to the database. I'm still trying to get a handle on disposing of objects properly, but most everything I read tells me to dereference and let Garbage Collection take over.

Here is the problem,however: if the text is more than 1 line, the list box does not show all the text.It ends up looking messy.So getting back to my question, is it possible to make the list box item height for an item depending on the amount of lines that item contains?This is a one line sentence in the list box and should take up one line.This is a multi line sentence in the list box and should take up two lines for item height.

Flattening An Object Hierarchy Using A Shim Class - Initializing Derived Object Properties From The Base Object?
Jul 10, 2010I am somewhat new to object oriented programming and am attempting to flatten a Linq object hierarchy by using a shim class.how to initalize a derived class with property values from a base class?I have two objects, a base object with about 100 properties, and a derived object which inherits from the base object and adds a few additional properties beyond those of the base object. My simple constructor creates the derived object, but I am looking for a way to initialize the derived object properties with values from the base object.Right now I am using reflection to iterate over the properties individually and I suspect there may be a better way. The following example shows my shim class constructor for the derived class, and two properties:
newProperty1 - a new string property of the derived class
flattenedProperty2 - a new string property of the derived class, copied from a 2nd-level object of the base class

Get Selected Item Index Or A Sorted & Grouped List Relative To Item Source?
Feb 12, 2011I'm having some difficulty with a sorted & grouped listbox in WPF vb.net 3.5 that has an items source bound to an ObservableCollection.
What I want to be able to do is to retrieve a piece of data from the ObservableCollection items source depending on what item in the listbox the user has selected.I've almost got it working but because the listbox is sorted it does not match the index of the items source.
