View 2 RepliesI'm using VB.NET 2008. I have a form with about 10 or so labels on it, and that could increase the more I develop my assignment. I would like to give each of these labels a context menu, which says "Whats this?" and provide a message box to the user with the appropriate help text. Now what I've done so far is created a contextmenustrip on my forum, and linked all the labels to that single contextmenustrip. I have also added a menu item to that strip called WhatsThisToolStrip MenuItem, but I am at a loss, on where to go next, and find out on what label the contextmenu was activated on?
So for example if a user right clicks the lblStatus label and selects "Whats this?" item a different message box will appear than if the user right clicked the lblSid label.
I have made it so that as soon as the form opens it puts an icon in the tray and when you right click the icon it comes up with a contextmenustrip. in the form I have put a button and a textbox. when you click the button, it creates a new item in the contextmenustrip What I wanted to do was add a peice of code to this new item, is this possible?

View 4 RepliesI'm kicking my self for not being able to resolve this.I have a few items in my context menu thats for my listbox that toggle enable/disable depending on eitheritem is selecteditem is checked.the top 3 items should be enabled only if a item is selected, which works,and the bottom 2 only if an item is checked in the list.(it is a chked list)But what i would really like is that if ONE checkbox is checked then the top three would be disabled. i did try adding a for loop to check for an item is checked but it only half the time worked. I'd like to be able to tell the Programmer what Object made the call (or executed the subroutine) that raised the event. Not dissimilar to the Sender as Object event parameters one gets when working with a System Object. Which begs the question, How do I get that information, if I don't ask for it?Is there a way to get this information from some call made in the subroutine about to raise the event?

View 4 RepliesI am in the process of learning this new programming paradigm called OOP (I am a very seasoned structured programmer). In that context I am receiving what I call contradictions in vb.net regarding the instantiation of an object. Given the two lines of code below:

The first line is quite simple - SQLcmd is an object - period. It is the second line that is creating the ambiguity. One reference I have read says in order for a class to instantiate an object the key word "new" must be used. But I have also seen examples where SQLdr is also called an object? To add to the ambiguity I have seen class examples where the class was constructed without a new subroutine (a constructor) and called with the key word "new" which I have been informed by vb.net on more than one occasion in doing such that "there are no constructors" in the class. So would someone please tell me - Is SQLdr an object and if so is it by inheritance (the other escape path) or what; and lastly am I correct in my understanding that in order to use the key word "new" there must be a "new" subroutine/function/constructor in the class.
Right basically if a checkbox in my application is checked "Close to system tray" then my form will cancel close and send to tray instead

Let's say I have an employee class with ID, Forename, Surname, Initials and Email Address properties.
At present, you can construct an Employee object by passing a data row which, typically will include all these fields. However, sometimes I only want the ID, Forename and Surname but still want to populate an object.

However obviously if certain fields are not present in the data row, I will have an error. Is there a quick way of populating the object based on the fields that are present within the data row without a) having to have separate subs for each circumstance and b) without having to try / catch (or something similar) around each property? I know other languages have options like this - where if there is no value, it will be another value (i.e. a default).

I have a list of 12 buttons on a form. I want to label each of them representing a month from left to right starting at the most recent month. So if today is the 12/3/12 my buttons will be in THIS order MAR12,FEB12,JAN12,DEC11,NOV11 ETC UP TO BUTTON 12. I have already written code for it and it works but it is long winded.

Im trying to change the information on each row depending on the result from the query. Im thinking that at the minute my problem is that I'm only returning the first result from the query into the result.
e.g. query returns row 1 with '1232' row 2 '1243' but result is only ever set to '1232'
In my datagridview, I want to be able to change the value of comboBox1 depending on what the user selects in comboBox2
I had this working correctly, however if I move onto a new line in my gridview and select a different value in the second row it changes the previous row also. For instance, on Row1, if comboBox1 = A, combox2 = B
Then on Row2, if comBox1 = Y, comboBox2 = Z
However, when I change Row1, Row2 is also changed to reflect what was chosen in Row1. Is there a way I can tailor it to each specific row?
