Pattern To Curry Delegate Parameters (using .NET 2.0 Or Later)?
Dec 23, 2010
Sometimes it is useful to take a method call, complete with parameters, and turn it into a MethodInvoker which will invoke the indicated function with those parameters, without having to specify the parameters at the time. At other times, it's useful to do something similar, but leaving some parameters open. This type of action is called "Currying". What is the best pattern for doing this in VB?
It's possible to use lambda expressions in VB 2010, but lambda expressions aren't compatible with edit-and-continue, and the closures they create can have unexpected by-reference behaviors. An alternative approach is to define some generic methods such as shown here:
[Code]...
that is the mechanism if a delegate is created from a struct member function? It appears the delegate gets its own copy of the struct, but I don't know whether that copy is boxed or unboxed. If it's not boxed, replacing CurryAction0 and CurryAction1 with structs would avoid the need to allocate a CurryAction0 or CurryAction1 as a separate heap object when creating the delegate. If it's going to be boxed, though, using a struct would add the overhead of copying the struct to the boxed instance while not saving anything.

I need to convert the following C# code to VB.NET:
public bool TryGetRewriteMatch(UrlContext url, out RedirectMatch match)
{
// NOTE: Normally this would use regular expression matches, cached database
[Code].....
However, I need to reference Url and ProductID in the function and I don't know how to pass them as parameters or get their values from the original function.

i just want to know if there is a way to implement constraint for parameters with a repeating pattern. For that i meant something like this
ParamArray pattern as Integer()
if i need an integer, and any amount of the "pattern" (the pattern here is one integer). so basically the pattern accepts 1 integer and multiples of 1 integer, meaning 2 integers, 3 integers so is there a way to upgrade this so we can have this pattern:
Integer, Boolean
and any valid combinations for this pattern will include
Integer, Boolean, Integer, Boolean
Integer, Boolean, Integer, Boolean, Integer, Boolean
etc, etc
currently the only way i can think of is to wrap Integer and Boolean as 1 object and apply pattern 1, but i was searching for a better alternative?

from the documentation we have this: Multicast Delegate: Represents a multicast delegate; that is, a delegate that can have more than one element in its invocation list.
so am i right to say that Multicast delegate is no different from a normal delegate other than the fact that it has arguments. so System.Action is a 'normal' delegate whereas System.Action(T)(Byval obj as T) is a multicast delegate?

I am trying to write a VB.NET alternative to a C# anonymous function.I wish to call Threading.SynchronizationContext.Current.Send which expects a delegate of type Threading.SendOrPostCallback to be passed to it. The background is here, but because I wish to both pass in a string to MessageBox.Show and also capture the DialogResult I need to define another delegate within. I am struggling with the VB.NET syntax, both from the traditional delegate style, and lambda functions.My go at the traditional syntax is below, but I have gut feeling it should be much simpler than this:
Private Sub CollectMesssageBoxResultFromUserAsDelegate(ByVal messageToShow As String, ByRef wasCanceled As Boolean)
wasCanceled = False

I'm writing a query to select all records that has any part of parameter. I have one table called Employees. Some people have name like this: John David Clark If the parameter is
[Code]....
I should be able to get result back as long as there's a match in the parameters. If I use Function Contains (q.FirstName & " " & q.LastName).Contains(employeeName), I will not get any result back if employeeName is "John Clark" Function Contains looks only for next words from left to right. It doesn't match a single word at a time. So that's why I used this in the Linq to SQL:

Basically Commands has Parameters and parameters has functions like Add, AddWithValue, and etc. In all tutorials i've seen, i usually noticed that they are using Add instead of AddWithValue.

since it saves my coding time. So which is better to use? Which is safe to use? Does it improves performance?

While reading this threadthe code sample there came from MSDN, which was used to demonstrate the use of a delegate. I know what Delegates are. And I know how they work when it comes to things like crossing threads and even sinks.... how ever, the sample given is a simplecontrived example, and I'm wondering why/when would I use a delegate in this situation? Or in any situation? In my head, it seems it would have been easier/cleaner to call the function pointed to directly...

I heard once that .net introduced an already defined delegate with no parameter that we could use instead of creating one.

I came across a snippet of C# code which is very useful. I am trying to convert it to VB.NET, but can't seem to.
timer.Tick += delegate { panel.Children.Add(source); timer.Stop(); };
Is it possible to translate this to something similar in VB?

I'm in the process of converting some existing code to VB. However, I'm running into a bit of a snag. It seems that in C#, a delegate can have a return value, but not so in VB. So my question is, how would I convert the following VB code to handle this?.[code]

Private someSub()
If someBoolean = True Then Exit Sub
' do some great work because someBoolean is False
End Sub
I know there is a name for this. The idea is to check something and if it isn't what you want then you stop code processing. I thought it was called "escape pattern", but Google isn't confirming that name.

when should a trigger in your head go off signifying "Aha! I should use the factory pattern here!"? I find these moments will occur with many other design patterns, but never do I stop myself and think about this pattern.
