i'm trying to populate a simple combobox with a query to a MySql database. I Just want the combobox to show the results of the query:
SELET DISTINCT models from Cars
I am using VB 2008 with Datasets, how can I achieve this?
I have a project in Visual Studio 2008 and there is a working data connection to a MySQL database. In other words, I can query the db directly from Visual Studio and it will display the results.
I've tried a couple of approaches that I found online for writing a connection string and accessing the db, but no luck yet.
All I'm trying to do is code a button to query the db and then reset the text property of a label/textbox to display the results based upon another label/textbox value.
The pseudo-code I am imagining is something like this:

result_textbox.Text = SELECT field FROM table WHERE otherfield = key_textbox.Text

I didn't see any related questions posted on SO - forgive me if I missed one that already exists and this is a dupe.
What is the correct way to accomplish this?

I need to pull from an access database to populate a combobox. Then from there I need to have a second combo box populated depending on the selection in the first box. My thought of an example would be a website that is setup for selecting car make, modle,year...can that be done in VB?

e.g. combobox displays

blue
But want I want is if a person chooses red I want to pass back the number 1 value to a backend database. I'm able to populate a combo box with the colours but not sure how i 'grab' the value to pass back

Combobox just displays the colours and when chosen in the combo box I grab the value corresponding to colour chosen.

I have a basic calendar schedule i want to loop through and then do some checks. My first data reader works fine. But as soon as i put in the second data reader it does not finish.Here is my code

I am having a problem with filling a combobox with unique values.Im not very good at vb either so I will explain what I have done so far.
1. I added a combobox to my form called Combobox1
2. I clicked the little triangle widget thing on the ComboBox1 set the dataset to MyDATASETDataSet1
3. Display Member: CurrencyCountry, Value Member: FCode, Selected Value = None
4. I fill MyDATASETDataSet1 when the form loads using:

The form does not load, i get the error: Failed to enable constraints. One or more rows contain values violating non-null, unique, or foreign-key constraints.If I replace ComboQuery with Fill Query (which is the default fill command) it displays results....but not unique results, i see the same items being repeated throughout the list in the combobox.I guess my questions are:
1. when you fill a dataset do you need to select all the fields when you are creating your query?
2. if i simply wanted to perform the following lookup:
SELECT DISTINCT [CurrencyCountry], [FCode] FROM [Prices]and set the combobox Display Member: CurrencyCountry, Value Member: FCode how would I do this in the code?
3. how can i change my query to display only unique values, distinct doesnt seem to be working?
how to take a query that returns a single row of data and load that data into textbox controls.I know about ExecuteScalar but it is only good for a single column of data from the query.

But how do i get the child nodes to the treeview from my childtable?I have parentnodes in one table and childnodes in another.. Or is it better to have em all in one table? I have a simple class that I trying to populate from an XML document. The XML file has an attribute called TrackingID in the root node which I would like to get as a property. For some reason, when I deseralize the class, the TrackingID is null. Everything else populates fine. I have tried various attributes on the TrackingID property with no luck.
