Delphi combines the two substrings, while .Net just concatenate them like a copy.

I have an external library that processes image files. I'm running it against thousands of images, and every now and then the library gets stuck on certain images. If I need to skip an image here or there, no problem, but I can't have the process get locked up, so I want to impose a maximum amount of time that the process is allowed to take for each image before I force it to give up and move on to the next image.
Prevent The Event From Triggering A Second Time?
May 28, 2011I have a TreeView object on my form, with check boxes. By the way, I'm working with vb.NET. I want it to perform a few different things with the aftercheck event:
If you check a node, check all its children
If you uncheck a node, uncheck the parent node
If you uncheck a node, uncheck all its children
The problem is when you uncheck a node, it unchecks its parent node, which triggers the event again and unchecks all its children.
Would there be a way to prevent the event from triggering a second time? Or will I have to give up on one of those two points?

Jul 15, 2011I have written a program in VB 2010 that dumps documentation info into an Excel file. Basically, the Excel file is a log file that keeps track of revisions for design drawings at an engineering firm.
There are approximately 20 people that have access to this program. However, I've run into issues where multiple users may be using the program and trying to send info to the Excel file at the same time. The Excel file is set to read only. My program opens the file with write access, and dumps the info into the appropriate cells, then closes the file. If one person is in the process of using the program, it causes an error with another persons system if they try to use it at the same time.
In some cases, it causes my program to crash, and it leaves the Excel file open on someones system.
Typically, my program would only have the Excel file open for a couple seconds. So, the issues mentioned above are rare, but they do happen.
I'm looking for ideas to prevent this issue from occuring.
Deterime Length Of Time It Would Take For File.Copy To Copy A File?
Aug 5, 2010I have a program that uses IO.File.Copy to copy files from point a to point b. Its slow, which is fine because there rather large files. I was wondering if there is way to get an estimate time to copy a particular file(s).
Example: File a will take 1 hour to copy, File B will take 30 minutes to copy. Estimate Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes.
Prevent File Copy Where Source And Target Are The Same File?
Sep 14, 2011In my program I allow the user to copy a file from one folder to another. If the file already exists in the target folder I want it to be overwritten.
All that works just fine - I'm not asking how to copy files.
But here's an example
Source file is:-
\SomeMachinesomeFolderfile.xyz
Target is:-
P:file.xyz
This might at first look like two separate files but in this case P: is mapped to \SomeMachinesomeFolder so the source and the target are actually the same file and the file copy will obviously fail.
Of course I want it to fail but my problem is that the windows generic error message seen by the user is not very helpful. It says something simple like "... can't be copied because it's busy". If the user isn't very bright he doesn't realize he's selected the same file both as source and target and he doesn't understand why it's busy.
What I want to do is detect in advance that the source and the target are the same file and display a more meaningful message to the user and not even bother trying to copy.
So, is there a way to detect that
\SomeMachinesomeFolderfile.xyz
and
P:file.xyz
are actually the same file?

The program also has a GUI.I want it so that when the user clicks the desktop icon, it does not start a second instance of the executable, but instead reveals the currently running background process. Is that possible?i.e. when the application is started with the "-startup" paremeter, it loads a hidden form2, and closes form1. When the desktop icon is clicked, it loads form1, while form2 remains hidden.

Jun 30, 2010I have written a program that searches a bunch of urls and pulls out information that I need. The program works to an extent. Everything codewise works, but it seems like I did a sloppy job of pulling the code together. After about 10 minutes of running, the program just becomes unresponsive and I have to close it through task manager. I've seen it range from 100k to 350k in memory useage. It also uses about 80%+ cpu usage at all times. I hope someone might be able to see something that I forgot or did wrong as the program is meant to run almost full time, executing parts of code on certain days/times.
