VS 2010: Prevent Multiple Users From Accessing File At The Same Time
Jul 15, 2011I have written a program in VB 2010 that dumps documentation info into an Excel file. Basically, the Excel file is a log file that keeps track of revisions for design drawings at an engineering firm.
There are approximately 20 people that have access to this program. However, I've run into issues where multiple users may be using the program and trying to send info to the Excel file at the same time. The Excel file is set to read only. My program opens the file with write access, and dumps the info into the appropriate cells, then closes the file. If one person is in the process of using the program, it causes an error with another persons system if they try to use it at the same time.
In some cases, it causes my program to crash, and it leaves the Excel file open on someones system.
Typically, my program would only have the Excel file open for a couple seconds. So, the issues mentioned above are rare, but they do happen.
I'm looking for ideas to prevent this issue from occuring.

Mar 24, 2012i created a windows blocker to prevent users access, and only give access to the computer for a certain time if they pay....In the block state taskmgr can not be accessed also no other method can close the blocker. but once the computer is unblocked for use it become vulnerable only to the taskmgr since i have to give access to the taskmgr when the program is not blocking access. Is there anyway to prevent my program from being KILLed in the taskmgr or is there a way to restart the blocker if the user KILLs the program?

Also, is it ok for me to make a thread asking 1 simple question? or do I have to ask a handful each time to save threads or something?

Apr 8, 2010I have a small problem with my application. When the system starts up, the program starts with it, but runs hidden (registry key with paremeter). The program also has a GUI.I want it so that when the user clicks the desktop icon, it does not start a second instance of the executable, but instead reveals the currently running background process. Is that possible?i.e. when the application is started with the "-startup" paremeter, it loads a hidden form2, and closes form1. When the desktop icon is clicked, it loads form1, while form2 remains hidden.

Accessing SQL (.mdf) Files With VB Program
Feb 10, 2012I am attempting to access an SQL (.mdf) file I have created with the Database Explorer utility of Visual Basic. Here is some relevant code from the program:

At this last line of code, I get the following error message:
"A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)".
I am using Windows Vista OS and the firewall is turned off.
I suspect the problem might be the settings (such as connection strings) within the app.config file, but if so I am unsure what the correct coding within this file should be to access the file.

Mar 5, 2011the Datagridview is included in first tabpage. first tabpage is the search form and the second tabpage is the record detail view. user is switching and working between those two continuously.
The problem is that everytime user selects the tabpage1 the datagridview repaints itself. there is about 6000 rows in datagridview so it takes about 2-3 sec to paint itself. I know the delay is normal and can't avoid that. but it affects the tabpage selection. tabpage1 isn't selected completely until the Datagridview1 finishes it job. in this time the tabpage1 and tabpage2 gets combined and confused.
is there a way to put datagridview processing in backgroundworker or something that doesn't affect main UI ?

I don't care about monitor modes, screen-savers, hard-drive spindown, etc (in fact, I'd prefer to leave those alone; I like it that it shuts the monitor off after a time period).Basically, I have an industrial program that needs to continually monitor a PCI card it uses for IO; and this activity alone isn't enough to convince Windows not to go into Sleep mode. We normally just shut the power-save features off, but we had an incident where a technician forgot, a customer's machine went to Sleep after the end of the shift, the pumps stopped recirculating, yadda-yadda big mess.

Jan 28, 2011I have a button and various other controls that when clicked, calls as sub. However if the user clicks the button or any of the other controls multiple times, the sub appears to 'stack up'. For example, if I click the button 10 times, and then some of the menu items that trigger it 20 times, the sub would 'stack up' and execute 30 times total. How can I have the sub cancel calls to itself if its called again? I basically only want the latest call to it to count.
