DB/Reporting :: Accessing Multiple Database Files With One GUI Program?

Jul 20, 2008

how would I go about making the user access different local SQL databases. As in they use a GUI program to access / read / write data in a database but can also use that same GUI program to do the same to multiple database files. Is that sort of setup easy to integrate into a VB program? or does a VB program by nature only try to access one database? To integrate the open and close dialogs into a VB GUI in terms of different database files, is there much involved?

DB/Reporting :: Database - Access Denied To A Text File (since It's Stored In The Program Directory In The Program Files)

Sep 20, 2010

I have a program where a lot of the required information for it is stored in text files. I simply read this information into large arrays. However, I don't think it's necessary to load all the information each time. Rather, it would be more efficient if I could simply search through a list of items to find the one I need and then use the data from it, or to find a similar name and use it elsewhere.

Would I be right in using a database? And is database programming done in SQL? I have a book on it telling me to use the SQL Server (IIRC), so I shouldn't be doing it in the VB.NET Express GUI?

Here's an example of what I would do:

Hex = 03 00 => dex number 003
Search in file Pokemon Dex Numbers
003 returns Bulbasaur
Check Bulbasaur base stats in the base stats file
etc

So basically I'm reusing a lot of information. I think a database would be best and it would all be internal right? I'm getting complaints about access denied to a text file (since it's stored in the program directory in the program files).

So to cap up the few questions I have:

-Databases are done in SQL and not inside the GUI?
-Databases would load internally?
-I could search a database without having to load it into like an array or something?

Accessing SQL (.mdf) Files With VB Program

Feb 10, 2012

I am attempting to access an SQL (.mdf) file I have created with the Database Explorer utility of Visual Basic. Here is some relevant code from the program:

Imports System.Data.SqlClient
Dim Database01 As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection("Data Source=C:Test01.mdf")
SMUDatabase01.Open()

At this last line of code, I get the following error message:

"A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)".

I am using Windows Vista OS and the firewall is turned off.

I suspect the problem might be the settings (such as connection strings) within the app.config file, but if so I am unsure what the correct coding within this file should be to access the file.

I will need to both read and write to this database.

DB/Reporting :: Writing A Program And Loading Info Into A SQL Database

Feb 17, 2009

I'm writing a program in VB.Net and loading the info into a SQL database. Debugging it works fine on my machine that I am programming it on, it connects to the database and runs through all the info perfectly. However trying to get it to run on another machine it will not connect to the database. I realize the reason for this is the connection string, it's looking specifically at the file directory for the database. How do I change this so that it will function on any machine. The program is only intended to run on one machine at a time and not over the internet.

1) Do I just change the connection string address from a local path to a web address?

2) Do I still need to install the local driver? In my case I believe I'll be using Connector/Net to connect to my MySQL database url...

Read Multiple Text Files In A Folder And Insert Them Into The Database?

Mar 20, 2009

I have many text files in a folder. What I can do now is to read through one text at a time and insert it into the database. My little app reads a text file when I debug it. So, I need to run it several times to read all those text files and import them into the database.

My question is how to read multiple text files inside a folder at a time. Here's my code which works fine but it reads only one text files at a time.

Private Sub btnRead_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnRead.Click
Dim filelocation As String filelocation = "F: xtfilesch25.txt" Dim chid As Integer chid = 25 'read from file Dim MyStream As New StreamReader(Path.Combine(Application.StartupPath,

[code].....

Obviously, I need a way to loop through a folder and check if there's text file. But I cant get it right.

.net - One Dataset With Multiple Results Sets (multiple Select Statements) SQL Reporting Service?

Oct 15, 2011

I have a question regarding the dataset usage in Reporting Services. I have a stored procedure which returns multiple select statements (result tables), and I created a Dataset in Reporting Services 2005 with this stored procedure. The problem is that I can not reference the second or third result table, and I can only use the first select statement fields. Is this the limitation on Reporting Services Dataset or is there a way to use multiple table results in one dataset?

.net - Accessing Tables From Different .mdb Files?

Feb 1, 2010

I need to show a grid of saved projects (compare "orders") in a datagrid, where the projects are saved in an Access 2000 database with a similar schema as follows:

ID Name Country_ID Plant_Type
1 'Test' 1 1
2 'Second' 2 2

Let's call the file "Projects.mdb". This is then showed in the datagrid as:

ID Name Country Plant Type
1 'Test' 'Germany' 'Free Range'
2 'Second' 'France' 'Inclined Roof'

where the countries and "Plant Types" are fetched from a different table in a different .mdb file (also Access 2000, call it "Language.mdb", although there is a lot of different background data in it), depending on the current user's language preference. It is unfortunately not an alternative to merge these .mdb's into one file.

To be able to show the datagrid I have so far linked the tables from "Language.mdb" into "Projects.mdb", but this screws up when the project is being installed on another computer with the .msi file i created (we'd like to have this easily packaged and installed), as the "Language.mdb" doesn't exist on the linked path on the target computer (Basically the problem here).
I can come up with the following solutions:

Force all users to install on the same path, so that the links will work (undesirable)Use connection strings in the query as shown here on MSDN (still trying this out, but I need to work on the details)make a post-install script that relinks the tables according to the correct path.

Accessing Multiple Form Controls Using A Variable For The Name?

May 23, 2012

I'm trying to iterate through a group of ComboBoxes and set a property using a concatenated string & variable to represent the name of the control. However, I can't get the instance of the form to recognize the (String & Integer_Variable) as one of its controls -- and so it doesn't recognize any of the appropriate properties or subroutines as members of the System.Windows.Forms.Control.Is there a cleaner way to do this?

For myTempCount = 1 To 6
If tempValue < Me.("ComboBox" & myTempCount).Items.Count Then
ComboBox.SelectedIndex = tempValue 'appears to work -- how?[code].....

This code was originally VBA / VB6, which I put through ArtinSoft's Visual Basic Upgrade Companion (VBUC). FWIW, I'm using Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express.

Accessing Multiple Projects In A Single Solution

Jun 17, 2009

I want to tie these together with other projects in a single solution called myMain. When I add these projects to the solution, their forms are not accessible in myMain (e.g. myRibbonRTF.frmMain.Show()). I've searched high and low for the last week trying to solve this and the only nearby solution is to turn the other projects into .dlls and access them in myMain that way.

User Data - SQLCE Files - One Database With Multiple User On PC

Mar 3, 2010

I'm designing a PC-based app that has a little local database. I'm using VB.NET with SQL Server Compact Edition. The user will only ever have access to one database file, because it's all about storing a user specific data. However I'm thinking of the situation where there could be multiple users that access the PC, each with their own Windows account. So ideally I'd need separate database files for each User.

I'm not sure how to implement this. I was hoping to deploy the 'empty' database as a ClickOnce deployment, but I can't see how I can have a database per user doing this. Also I'm not sure where to store the database files anyway. perhaps in MyDocuments for each user? Or perhaps I need to stick to just one database, but add a 'User' column into every table, so it can hold data for every user. I didn't want to do this though - because I wanted to keep the nice separation between the data offered by physically separate files.

Relative Path And Accessing Text Files?

I can check the file using the full path. However, I want to avoid errors such as moving the project folder to a different location. Is there anyway to check using a relative path? File.Exists("~Datadata.txt")

Or is it better to create it under Application.StartupPath?
