DB/Reporting :: Writing A Program And Loading Info Into A SQL Database

Feb 17, 2009

I'm writing a program in VB.Net and loading the info into a SQL database. Debugging it works fine on my machine that I am programming it on, it connects to the database and runs through all the info perfectly. However trying to get it to run on another machine it will not connect to the database. I realize the reason for this is the connection string, it's looking specifically at the file directory for the database. How do I change this so that it will function on any machine. The program is only intended to run on one machine at a time and not over the internet.

DB/Reporting :: Get Info From MDB Database When A Button Is Clicked?

Nov 17, 2009

What I am trying to do is get specific info from a database and what I am getting is the first entry.

I have made a database connection, made the top bar not visible and I have inserted a text box and multiple labels. My MDB database has 3 columns (street, city, postcode) and multiple rows.

What I want is when a user enters a postcode in the text field the other labels get the info related to it. I.E. when a user enters "FY1 3DL" the labels update to "King street" and "Blackpool". With the code below I get the first row from the database.

Code:
Private Sub Button2_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button2.Click
Me.StreetsTableAdapter.Fill(Me.WcipcodeDataSet.Streets)
End Sub

Writing Info To And Getting Info From .text File Using A ListBox's Display

Jul 31, 2010

I am working on a media player, and I would like to setup a local playlist feature. I am using a single ListBox and its "Display-" and "Value-Member" properties. The display is the song's Artist and Name, and the value is the song's file path (i.e 'C:UsersUSERMusicetc.').To write the file path to the .txt file, I believe I can use the following code:[code]

Writing User Info Such As User, Computer Name, Date, And Time To An Acces Database?

Sep 25, 2009

writing user info such as user, computer name, date, and time to an acces database using a button click event. Then use a query to check if the user has accepted the aggreement. If the user has accepted the aggreement then call a vb.exe that display the aggrement. I have a login script that runs the vb.exe and uses a button click that records the user info to a csv file, but if the user has already agreed to the policies I do not want it run again.

DB/Reporting :: Database - Access Denied To A Text File (since It's Stored In The Program Directory In The Program Files)

Sep 20, 2010

I have a program where a lot of the required information for it is stored in text files. I simply read this information into large arrays. However, I don't think it's necessary to load all the information each time. Rather, it would be more efficient if I could simply search through a list of items to find the one I need and then use the data from it, or to find a similar name and use it elsewhere.

Would I be right in using a database? And is database programming done in SQL? I have a book on it telling me to use the SQL Server (IIRC), so I shouldn't be doing it in the VB.NET Express GUI?

Here's an example of what I would do:

Hex = 03 00 => dex number 003
Search in file Pokemon Dex Numbers
003 returns Bulbasaur
Check Bulbasaur base stats in the base stats file
etc

So basically I'm reusing a lot of information. I think a database would be best and it would all be internal right? I'm getting complaints about access denied to a text file (since it's stored in the program directory in the program files).

So to cap up the few questions I have:

-Databases are done in SQL and not inside the GUI?
-Databases would load internally?
-I could search a database without having to load it into like an array or something?

DB/Reporting :: Accessing Multiple Database Files With One GUI Program?

Jul 20, 2008

how would I go about making the user access different local SQL databases. As in they use a GUI program to access / read / write data in a database but can also use that same GUI program to do the same to multiple database files.Is that sort of setup easy to integrate into a VB program? or does a VB program by nature only try to access one database? To integrate the open and close dialogs into a VB GUI in terms of different database files, is there much involved?

Loading File Info Properly?

Dec 27, 2009

I have setup a file that is comma delimited:

{object name,text,object name,text...}

I have loaded the file, split the delimited text into to separate arrays. One array is for the' object name', the other for its corresponding text.The text is no issue. My issue is that the 'object name' would look something like "form1.label1, form1.label2..." This loads fine, but I can not figure out how to get the 'object name' to be used as an object.I dimensioned the array for 'object name' as an object, but this won't work:

objectname(i).text = "..."

Looking at the values of the 'object name' array, after each listing it says {string}I need this to work this way because the file is loaded with the idea that it could be in any order, longer or shorter then another, etcetera.

VS 2008 - Loading Form With Some Info

Apr 16, 2009

I want to create a form that, when starting, will display in a ListBox the content of a txt file. I know the file is read because I can display the content in a MsgBox. Here's a snippet of what I tried so far:
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Dim filein As String = "MyProjects.txt"
Dim objReader As New System.IO.StreamReader(filein)
ListBox1.Text = objReader.ReadToEnd
objReader.Close()
End Sub
When I debug my app, ListBox1 is empty.

StreamWriter Class - Writing Info Into Log File

Oct 26, 2010

I have an issue with StreamWriter class. Basically, in an application running as a web service, I need to write info into a log file. When I send 2 web service calls simultaneously, the entries created in the log file are not correctly written. For example,
in call #1, ID 1 - xyz is to be written to the log file. In call #2, ID 2 - abc is to be written. When I viewed the log, it shows ID 1 - xyz & ID 1- abc. Looks like there's some memory data being shared and mixed together, even though it's totally 2 separate web service calls. From my understanding, each call (i.e. each will be process under a different application instance) should have its own set of memory allocation for data processing... If I am to make this application as a Console Application, it looks like everything is processed correctly.

Forms :: Speed Up Loading MP3 File Info Into ListView

Apr 27, 2010

It has the ability to recursively grab all .wmv and .mp3 files in any chosen folder, and add them to a playlist.When opening the playlist, my program adds all the songs to an array, then starts adding the songs to a listview, categorizing them by song, artist, album, and genre, using a dll to access the ID3v1 tags on the .mp3 file.It can successfully create playlists of thousands of songs at a somewhat okay speed, the problem is loading that into the categorized listview.It used around 75% of my friend's CPU while loading his 5k+ song playlist into the listview, and it never finished after loading it in for a couple minutes (it auto updates as it loads, because it is done in a new thread.) It never finished because his OS has a bug where, if the CPU usage is over 100% for more then a few mins, it BSOD's, but that's beside the point.

His CPU, by the way, is a quad core 2.33 GHZ processor.The listview loads thousands of songs by using a lot of CPU [low amount of RAM, less then 40MB 99% of the time], and it does it slowly. [code]I've already redone the sub once or twice to speed it up, and at the moment it's 2-3.,

DB/Reporting :: How To Save / Load Info In DataGridView

Nov 30, 2009

I'm working on a simple "sports management" game just to test out whether I could make an actual one some time in the future, but for the life of me I haven't been able to figure out how to save the contents of the datagridview. I want it to be saved in a format that doesn't require the user to have Access or any other program, so that the only thing users need are the .exe and the database file. Another question about the datagridview: How do I access the content on specific rows and columns of the datagridview? If I want TextBox1.Text to be whatever is written on Row 4, Column 2, how do I access that information?

I thought of using the WriteXML, ReadXML. But that would overwrite the existing XML. Does anyone have a better way of saving the XML for future retrieval?

I want to move my programs and the database to another computer and hard-disks. It looks to me as though I nearly have to re-create the controls and rewrite some of the code to make it so the programs still work after the move.
