View 2 RepliesI am in front of a great dilemma whether to store files in Database or doing it the standard way. I would choose the second option, but my application will be used by multiple users, so I am doing it by Web Services.
On the one hand, storing in database will be very useful as every user would have access to everything very fast, not caring about file paths, locations and so on.
On the other hand, if this table consists of 1000 files, wouldn't it be a bad idea as there should be some performance loss?
At the present moment, I am using mysql as database, but I am thinking of moving to SQL Server, but I suppose this is not DB Issue.
I have a program where a lot of the required information for it is stored in text files. I simply read this information into large arrays. However, I don't think it's necessary to load all the information each time. Rather, it would be more efficient if I could simply search through a list of items to find the one I need and then use the data from it, or to find a similar name and use it elsewhere.
Would I be right in using a database? And is database programming done in SQL? I have a book on it telling me to use the SQL Server (IIRC), so I shouldn't be doing it in the VB.NET Express GUI?
Here's an example of what I would do:
Hex = 03 00 => dex number 003
Search in file Pokemon Dex Numbers
003 returns Bulbasaur
Check Bulbasaur base stats in the base stats file
etc
So basically I'm reusing a lot of information. I think a database would be best and it would all be internal right? I'm getting complaints about access denied to a text file (since it's stored in the program directory in the program files).
So to cap up the few questions I have:
-Databases are done in SQL and not inside the GUI?
-Databases would load internally?
-I could search a database without having to load it into like an array or something?
I am using VS 2010 and I want to read the Text File values and place them into variables. This is my code
Me.OpenFileDialog1.FileName = Nothing
If Me.OpenFileDialog1.ShowDialog = System.Windows.Forms.DialogResult.OK Then
Me.TextBox2.Text = Me.OpenFileDialog1.FileName
filename = Me.TextBox2.Text
End If
[Code] .....
I am unable to move pointer to next line.
I am creating a program with multiple Forms designed to track multiple projects.The first form is designed to setup new projects and obtain previous projects, from there the other forms open to be filled in with information.For new projects the next forms open blank but I then need these later forms to be tied to this project name so that it can be selected from a combobox and the information will be already populated.tieing the information on the later forms to the projects populated in the combobox so that it appears when a specific project is selected.Is this able to be done without creating databases?
As an example, say I create a new project then a new form opens and I add some information to a textbox.I would then like to be able to save the information so that the project name moves to the combobox on the first form (I can handle this) and the information input in to the textbox is tied to the project name so that when the program is reopened and the project name is selected the second form opens with the textbox populated.
In the program I'm working on, there is a 'sign-in' form that pops up for the user to enter first name, last name, and DOB. What I want to do is STORE that information in a text file for FUTURE use by the program (i.e. displaying a list of all previous users of the program).I already know how to use streamwriter to write text to a file, but I would like for the text file to be stored within the program files and also for a new user's data to be appended to that file every time.
Do I simply add the text file to the project files? When I do that, its path is 'My Documents'. How will that affect the program when I publish it? I guess I just don't yet understand what happens when the program is finished and published. The code for the 'Submit' button on the sign-in form is pasted below. At the bottom, I've put a comment to indicate where I want to store the data to a file.
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Dim TxtBox() As String = {TextBox1.Text, TextBox2.Text, TextBox3.Text}
For i As Integer = 0 To 2
If TxtBox(i) = Nothing Then

When I store a binary file in a MS Sql table & then retrieve it & write it back to disk the new file is always 1 byte bigger than the original file, no matter what the file type. Is this normal? The files all open fine in their respective applications, but I'm just wondering where the extra byte comes from & if I'm doing something wrong in my code.
Using con As New Odbc.OdbcConnection(conString)
Using cmd As New Odbc.OdbcCommand("insert into mytable values (?,?)", con)
Using fs As New IO.FileStream(filename, IO.FileMode.OpenOrCreate,

I'm rewriting a legacy application in .NET. In the earlier version, I used a few control .INI files that could be edited by the advanced user to provide variation in certain program options. (The program also permitted override of these same variabes via menus and such.) I used the API functions to read the .INI files and rewrite them to alter the user's environment for subsequent runs.
View 19 RepliesHere is what I would like to do:
- Store string data from a 'sign in' form into a text file. This text file must be one that is saved even after the user exits the program. The text file must also be one that will stay with the program even after it is published (executable).
- Be able to write to/read from the file for purposes of displaying some or all of that data on a form.
I use an Application Setting to do this - of type 'Specialized String Collection'. I tried this, but for some reason I could not get it to work. It was a good idea, but I need to be able to SEE the data that has been saved, and with a setting it seems like that is not easily done. I've decided that I either need to use a simple text file or a 1-table database for this. I would prefer just a text file, but in either case, it needs to be part of the .exe when published.
I have added a text file to my project, but I am not sure if it will be "included" in the project when I publish it. The path of the file I've added is in 'My Documents', but in my code, I will have to specify the path in order to use Streamwriter. How will this affect the program when I publish it? I felt the need to make a new thread because on my last one we had been mainly talking about settings, and I've decided that isn't the best option for me.
I've got an app which uses a background worker to copy files. It works fine but some files are quite large and it "appears" as though the app isn't doing anything. Is there an alternative to the File.Copy method of copying files so I can report on the progress of individual file copies, like the percentage complete?

View 3 RepliesBasically, I want to have a database that's lightweight and I won't need to install amillion other things on my clients computers for them to access this.I just need a simple method of reading and writing values so that they're not hardcoded into the program. I could do MySQL (which is what I'm very familiar with), but it doesn't need to be making calls remotely.
View 4 RepliesI basically need to hold a lot of data - the structure is that of a five dimensional array holding integers.What would be the most efficient way of storing this in a file (I was thinking of XML - your opinion?) that would also be quick to extract.
View 3 RepliesI have a simple multithread application that stores updated data from a list of websites. After each thread gathers data, it then store the data into the same text file. I am now thinking of having each thread store the data directly into a arrayList, and after a certain amount of time past, store from the arrayList to the text file. Which situation would enable the application to complete its task faster?
View 1 RepliesI am trying to retrieve file details from files in the Program Files folder. I receive an error while trying to retrieve file details.
Dim sFileName As String = ("%ProgramFiles%Windows DefenderMSASCui.exe")
Dim Info As FileVersionInfo
Info = FileVersionInfo.GetVersionInfo(sFileName)
Msgbox(Info.ProductName.ToString())
I receive file not found error at 3rd line. But if I change the path from "%ProgramFiles%Windows DefenderMSASCui.exe" to "c:Program FilesWindows DefenderMSASCui.exe" it works fine.
What should I do if I want to retrieve file details from the path which includes a "%" character?
I wrote a program to download and play AVI files the files are large in size and long time wise. I have the files playing as they are being downloaded but i can't see how long the file is or seek reliably. i was reading that the AVI headers are in the last 512kb of the AVI file *why would't they put it at the start* lol so my question is is there a way to download the last 512Kb of the file i'm downloading. i have the Bytes Read and Length of the file while its downlaoding i'm just not sure where to go from there, or how to do it atleast. If i had the length in time of the Avi file i could set the trackbar to be able to seek properly. or if someone has an idea how i could get the time of the video by using fps and some math i could prob do it that way too but idk how i would tell how i can find how many kb are in the fps i'm sure it changes so think that way is't going to be reliable. how to get the last 512kb would be the best option not sure if it can be done even.

Need to store JPG/GIF picture files in an access database table and then would like to retreive it and put it on a Word Document using VB 2005 code.
View 17 RepliesIn Java you can store a class in a separate file and instantiate it from a method in another file as long as the class file is in the same directory but this doesn't seem to work in Visual Basic.
View 1 RepliesI am making a program that stores information for my applications. There are 4 main things I need in the XML file, the login information (User name and password), Application names and keys, and the owner of the application (who bought it). The program allows the user to enter as many applications and owners as they want and once login information is correct it loads the data. Then on exit all the data saves to a XML file.
My XML file looks like this
<Data>
<Login>
<UserName> (UserName) </UserName>
<Password> (Password </Password>
</Login>
<Applications>

I finished my application whith vb2010, this application uses a Access database. I have a problem because when I install my application he put database in de same path "program files" and this path is only read And my application crahed. I know how to installer put database in other path but I don't know how to tell my application to find this database.
View 2 RepliesI'm creating a bookmark library cause my friend requested but I do not know how to make it so that you can add bookmarks while you are inside the program and have them stay there even if you close it.
View 4 RepliesHow could I go about doing this if I can? Storing files into an application compressing them and then extracting them?
View 1 Replieshow would I go about making the user access different local SQL databases. As in they use a GUI program to access / read / write data in a database but can also use that same GUI program to do the same to multiple database files.Is that sort of setup easy to integrate into a VB program? or does a VB program by nature only try to access one database? To integrate the open and close dialogs into a VB GUI in terms of different database files, is there much involved?

View 4 RepliesI am writing a backup program that zips files. Using some sample code I have the following that creates a zip file. Problem is it does not get any subdirectories or files. Where am i going wrong?
Dim azFileNames() As String = Directory.GetFiles(SourceFolder)
Dim objCrc32 As New Crc32()
Dim zipStream As ZipOutputStream
[CODE]...
Alternativley, there is another component to the zipping dll that I could probably bypass the above altogether. It is: FZ.CreateZip(DestFile, SourceFolder, True, "", "") Where DestFile is (Output stream as system.io.stream). I'm trying to read all the files, directories, sub dir and files, etc from a specific location, let's say 'My Documents' into Destfile in which the FZ.CreateZip zips the file. FZ is FastZip which is from icsharpcode.net. They have c# examples, but that's greek to me. I'm trying to just learn VB!
I'm trying to host some static files for access by an ASP.Net web role and a separate data worker role that are both running on the same deployment (they use a global static interface).
However, I'm unsure how exactly to 'host' them, I've tried using virtual folders via HttpRuntime.AppDomainAppPath, but it only occasionally works in debug mode. The files also don't seem to get packaged into the deployment packages made by VS vis CSPack (though this might be a separate issue, is it possible to fix this too?)
The static files in question are actually WordNet, which I'm using through WordNet.Net, If that makes any difference. I also need the solution to work in both the cloud deployment and the emulator (if possible).
Looking for an idea of where the best place to keep files for a program. I use them frequently and they interact with the program directly. I want to place them in a place where they won't be easy to find if someone is just cruising thru the directories. Any ideas?
View 7 RepliesI have a vb .net ArrayList that I would like to store in one field on my Ms SQL 2008 database. Is it possible to put it in and get it back out as an ArrayList? I'm guessing i need to break down the Array some how and store it as a string, then rebuild it when reading back as i dont see any datatypes for sql that are for arrays. Which is a bummer for me! edit - The ArrayList stores a set of quote ID's. There is no limit to how big it is so it could hold 1 or 1001 different ID's
