View 1 RepliesI am making a program that stores information for my applications. There are 4 main things I need in the XML file, the login information (User name and password), Application names and keys, and the owner of the application (who bought it). The program allows the user to enter as many applications and owners as they want and once login information is correct it loads the data. Then on exit all the data saves to a XML file.
My XML file looks like this
<Data>
<Login>
<UserName> (UserName) </UserName>
<Password> (Password </Password>
</Login>
<Applications>
[Code] .....
I am using CGZipLibrary.dll in my code for zipping the files. A .zip file is being created but the file is not getting compressed. The original file and the .zip file are of same size.
View 1 RepliesI am need of creating a windows executable that contains a compression of certain other binary files, (executables etc)
It is a basic form with a button, on press of the button, it has to decompress certain binary files( some other executables too) into a certain path, the decompression happens based on some specific conditions and not always., This is the reason I could not use WinZIP to create the EXE.
Im trying to extract predominately table data from a PDF file, however, I would also like the option to extract image files (such as graphs, etc) as well.Is it possible to extract data from PDF files using a VB.Net application? Im trying to get this process as automated as possible, so Im trying not to use 3rd party applications such as pdf file convertors or in-line pdf readers.
Are there any free, or relatively cheap PDF data capture API's/code snipets that I can use to import data from a PDF file? Another option is to export PDF data/images into an excel spreadsheet. Is there a .Net tool that will allow this?
I'm trying to identify a specific string within a text file, and then extra a couple of bits of information that follow from that.
Example snippet from text file:
>Date 5.3: Tech Manual {30201}
Freya Plumes (30201) - 1
mu
These are made from brightly coloured. I want to be able to find where it says "Tech Manual", and then assign "Freya Plumes", "30201" and "1" to variables for manipulating and exporting to another file. There will be many instances from the same text file with similar information, so I'd need the extracted strings popped into an array for later referencing.
I would be grateful if someone can help me with this task. I am trying to extract a zip file and update a progress bar as it is being extracted to the d: drive. I assume the progress bar has to be set to the size of the text.zip file and update the progress bar incrementally but not sure how to actually implement it. I have it in a "do Loop" but it does not seem to be correct. If anyone feel like helping I would be grateful for that.
[Code]...
1. allow the user to specify a folder in which to find a specific text files,
2. to read a few specific numbers within each of those few text files, (eg. in txt file A, #A = '1', in txt file B, #B = '2', etc)
3. place those numbers into multiple comboboxes, (eg '1' into CB1, '2' into CB2, etc)
4. allow the user to change the number from the combobox drop down list, (eg CB1 change to '2', CB2 change to '1', etc)
5. Click to overwrite the old numbers in the text file with the new numbers and save the text files
My main problem is no. 2, how do I read a specific string in the text file and display it in the combobox?(Win XP, MS Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition with sp1)
I was able to extract icons from the current running processes and then put them into a ListView.
I am trying to do the same with files in a specified directory:
vb.net
[Code].....
When I use this code, I get an error stating: "'MainModule' is not a member of 'System.IO.FileInfo'." If I remove the very first line of the sub that specifies the directory, that error obviously goes away.
So, is there another method of extracting the icon? Or must I declare the directory in another way?
I'm getting ready to check MSDN to see if I can something withing the FileInfo Class,
I was just wondering how to extract or parse any particual tags (whichever I specify) from webpages. I know how to extract text and links from webpages, but I tried to use the same method from the following code for div tags, title tags etcetera and it doesn't seem to work:

Need to store JPG/GIF picture files in an access database table and then would like to retreive it and put it on a Word Document using VB 2005 code.
View 17 RepliesIn Java you can store a class in a separate file and instantiate it from a method in another file as long as the class file is in the same directory but this doesn't seem to work in Visual Basic.
View 1 RepliesI am in front of a great dilemma whether to store files in Database or doing it the standard way. I would choose the second option, but my application will be used by multiple users, so I am doing it by Web Services.
On the one hand, storing in database will be very useful as every user would have access to everything very fast, not caring about file paths, locations and so on.
On the other hand, if this table consists of 1000 files, wouldn't it be a bad idea as there should be some performance loss?
At the present moment, I am using mysql as database, but I am thinking of moving to SQL Server, but I suppose this is not DB Issue.
I was wondering if it's possible to store application data within an application without storing the data in an external file. For example, in my application, the user can choose where he/she would like to store the files that the application creates. I need to make the application remember the location that the user specified. I've tried using My.Settings to save this information, but since my application is standalone, if the location of the application changes, the My.Settings information changes as well (unless I coded it incorrectly before). I would prefer not to store this data in a .txt file or something similar.

View 4 RepliesI'm trying to host some static files for access by an ASP.Net web role and a separate data worker role that are both running on the same deployment (they use a global static interface).
However, I'm unsure how exactly to 'host' them, I've tried using virtual folders via HttpRuntime.AppDomainAppPath, but it only occasionally works in debug mode. The files also don't seem to get packaged into the deployment packages made by VS vis CSPack (though this might be a separate issue, is it possible to fix this too?)
The static files in question are actually WordNet, which I'm using through WordNet.Net, If that makes any difference. I also need the solution to work in both the cloud deployment and the emulator (if possible).
The user will basically be able to select a file on their hard drive, and enter some details or info about the file and then save it
View 2 RepliesI am using VS 2010 and I want to read the Text File values and place them into variables. This is my code
Me.OpenFileDialog1.FileName = Nothing
If Me.OpenFileDialog1.ShowDialog = System.Windows.Forms.DialogResult.OK Then
Me.TextBox2.Text = Me.OpenFileDialog1.FileName
filename = Me.TextBox2.Text
End If
[Code] .....
I am unable to move pointer to next line.
I'm hoping someone can provide me with some help in regards to this, here's a quick overview of what I'm doing: I'm using user32.dll API on a 2 second timer to detect which window is open, FindWindow(), once I've found the window I'm looking for, I use FindWindowEx() to get the child window of the previously found one.
So I've got my window which contains 2 items. An image, and an Input box.
2 questions (Minor, and Major)
Minor: Is there a better way to monitor when a particular window opens?
Major: How would I extract the image that is held on the form? And then insert text into the input box?
Note: The image is variable - it's polled from a website.
I am trying to store things such as user data for each user in my program, like with a class I made named UserData. I would like to have data different for each user. How can I do this? Also, I need to be able to access other user's data from my account.I tried using Settings, but they only had a limited number of classes, and the settings didn't seem to save for some reason.
View 13 RepliesI am at a new company and I am building a wizard for a web app, (.Net/4.0). The user goes to a few separate screens during the wizard process and must return to the original screen before completion of the wizard. This is different from how they normally do this. But this is how it is TO BE DONE.
One option is to store the result of each panel in the main screen in the DB. So then, when the user leaves & redirects back. I could check for a querystring then call a datareader and populate original values appropriately.

point me to the best way to store persistant objects ( of my own class) in a vb application? I am putting together a simple family recipe application and have created a food item class. I would like to store the instances ( food items) indefinately so that they are there each time I start the program complete with all properties and meethods

I've came to the stage where i need to save strings and application settings for my application. The My.Settings have worked it out until now. Now i have to store so many settings it's hard to keep track of them. That is why i need something new. So i've been looking around in INI files which seems impressively simple - but not very flexible. I've also took a look at XML which seems to be something to dive in to. But what i need now is advice. How do you store settings?
View 11 RepliesI will need to store 3 tables of data. Instead of implementing an entire database backend, I just want to store the record for these tables in application.settings.I don't care about security. Is it advisable to do it with application settings? how else would you do it? Perhaps storing a matrix in application.settings would be OK?
View 4 RepliesI have been tasked to create an application, for which the requirements may change over time.This application will be a data entry Windows application,of which multiple copies will be running.All data will be written to text (.CSV) files for validation before being uploaded to a remote mainframe system (iSeries).My application needs to store certain variable information in an external text (or XML) file; for example, the file path to shared resources (which may change over time),as well as the specific data fields required by the mainframe system.
My questionsare these: what is considered the best practice for accomplishing such a task, and how would I accomplish it?I am completely new to XML, so I don't even know where to begin, although I am sure that XML is the path to follow for what I am trying to accomplish.
I have an application that is updating from my ftp server.Inside app I have 2 variables like this:

I am trying to store an enum in my application settings. This enum is defined within my main assembly in the same namespace. When I try to find the type under the application settings, it seems like I can't find any types within my namespace. I can see all the types of the assemblies I reference though.
View 2 RepliesI'm creating a small tool for our team that performs backups of our servers. The plan is to put the tool in a central location so that anyone can use it.I'd like to store, somewhere, the date of the last backup for each server. I was wondering if I could use an application settings (with Application scope) for this? Is this bad practice? If so, what's the best practice? XML? text file? registry?
