Storing 3 Tables Of Data In Application Settings

May 16, 2010

I will need to store 3 tables of data. Instead of implementing an entire database backend, I just want to store the record for these tables in application.settings.I don't care about security. Is it advisable to do it with application settings? how else would you do it? Perhaps storing a matrix in application.settings would be OK?

Storing Strings And Application Settings?

Jun 25, 2010

I've came to the stage where i need to save strings and application settings for my application. The My.Settings have worked it out until now. Now i have to store so many settings it's hard to keep track of them. That is why i need something new. So i've been looking around in INI files which seems impressively simple - but not very flexible. I've also took a look at XML which seems to be something to dive in to. But what i need now is advice. How do you store settings?

Application Settings, Storing Type Internal To Your Assembly?

May 13, 2009

I am trying to store an enum in my application settings. This enum is defined within my main assembly in the same namespace. When I try to find the type under the application settings, it seems like I can't find any types within my namespace. I can see all the types of the assemblies I reference though.

VS 2010 Storing Backup History In Application Settings?

Jun 8, 2011

I'm creating a small tool for our team that performs backups of our servers. The plan is to put the tool in a central location so that anyone can use it.I'd like to store, somewhere, the date of the last backup for each server. I was wondering if I could use an application settings (with Application scope) for this? Is this bad practice? If so, what's the best practice? XML? text file? registry?

Storing A Database Connection String Into Settings In A .net DLL Data Layer?

Mar 4, 2011

I've always used this approach while implementing data layer DLL for web application:

1) put datasets into the dll project
2) use a helper class with a method like this:

public shared sub settCnnStr(strconnhere as string)
My.Settings.Item("connectionString") = strconnhere
end sub

3) when I need to use the dll I call a method like this (usually into global.asax):

xxxxxxx.helper.setCnnStr("yyyyyyyyyyyyyy")

This method always worked for me nicely but I'd like to know if this method could have serious drawback or if there's a better solution.

VS 2010 Storing Application Data Within An Application

Jan 8, 2012

I was wondering if it's possible to store application data within an application without storing the data in an external file. For example, in my application, the user can choose where he/she would like to store the files that the application creates. I need to make the application remember the location that the user specified. I've tried using My.Settings to save this information, but since my application is standalone, if the location of the application changes, the My.Settings information changes as well (unless I coded it incorrectly before). I would prefer not to store this data in a .txt file or something similar.

Storing Settings For A .NET Windows Service: Service Property Settings, Serialization?

I am working on a .NET Windows Service where I am trying to store settings that will be used when the service is started and while it is running. I have searched through posts on SO and found that using the Settings in the properties of the project is great for use with console and winforms applications. However, Google and SO are silent when it pertains to storing these settings with a windows service.

Storing 2-Dimension Arrays In My.Settings?

Dec 7, 2011

I'm still doing upgrades on my program that i'm creating and i've run into a bump again. I'm currently using a multi-dimension array to store a name, email, password, email provider, and user name. These 5 values are stored, corresponding with the latter, meaning the array is build as: name 1....n user name 1....n user email 1....n user email provider 1....n password 1....n So my question is, how can i store this in My.Settings? To be clearer, i'll use code: My.Settings.Name = name My.Settings.UserName = userName etc..... My current set up for a first run is like so... My.Settings.Password = adminInfo(2, 0) My.Settings.UserName = admingInfo(1, 0) etc.

Starting Multiple Instances And Storing The Settings?

Jul 11, 2011

I have a VB2010 application that must run as multiple instances on the same PC (it is a controlling/monitoring program of several devices, each instance of the program control one device)

Of course, the same application must save its own setting in different place, one for each device. For example, if I start the application for the device 3, I have to save the setting in a place marked as "3", in this way, when I start the application for device 4 it will load the settings for device 4 and not 3.

Of course all labels and similar stuffs must refer the starting device: i.e. the mdi caption must report "device 4", and so on...

In vb6 I created a shortcut with a command line and made my application accepting command line parameters.

In this way I could start the application passing the device number too. For example "myapp.exe 3" start my application for the device 3.

I stored all settings in several INI file, each one for a device: setting1.ini, setting2.ini, setting3.ini, ....

I was wondering if in vb2010 would be a better way to do that.

1. How could I start multiple instances?

2. How could I store the settings?

Hierarchical Data For Application Settings?

Jan 6, 2011

(using VB.Net 2008) I have been using the Settings feature of vb.net to store user/application settings of my program. For small stuff it's great, but quickly starts to feel limited as the data gets more complex. Now I need to group certain settings together and organize them in a hierarchical (or relational) fashion. But from looking at the Settings tab inside of .Net, everything appears to be stored completely flat. So what's the best option for me? Some ideas I have are:

1. Use a small local database (such as an .mdb or .sdf) to store user settings. I think this could become a pain if I ever needed to update/create more settings while avoiding losing previous user data - not very flexible to change.

2. Use datasets and convert the tables to XML files.

Sql - Find Tables Used From A .net Application To Remove Unused Tables?

May 10, 2012

We are presently developing an application, let's call it APP1, which uses a SQL Database which have about 800 stored procedures, 600 tables, etc. APP1 was originally created in order to replace another application, APP0, from which we do not have source code but only SQL tables, Stored Procedures, views, etc. Previous programers of APP1 used some DB objects from this same database and added some other objects specific to APP1 because it becomes bigger than APP0. And we do not need APP0 anymore as APP1 does all what we want, and more.

So, now, we are thinking about a way to find out which objects are used by APP1 in order to remove objects which are ONLY used by APP0.What is the best approach to discover all objects used by APP1 without having to open every single class and form?

Once we will have a complete list of these objects, it will be easy to use a program we bought which detects all dependencies for all SQL Objects specified directly from SQL and remove objects which do not return from any dependencies. Any ideas of how I could get this list without having to go through all our program that have many, many, many classes and forms?

Note : I know, in a perfect world, all calls to PSs and tables should be in a DAL but in the case of the application we're presently working on ... this is not our case! Yippy! (sarcastic yippy) ;)

Note 2 : This application is not using any ORM. So all queries are directly using SqlCommand. So any call to any DB objects are in string format.

Application.Settings VB 2005 - Save Arrays Using The Settings System Object

Jan 14, 2009

I just wondered if you can or can't save arrays using the settings system object. There seems to be no way of entering it at designtime. It seems implied you cannot create new user settings.subobjects at runtime. I'm looking to find the easiest way to save a populated array of PictureBox's. If the only way is a self/custom made/managed .ini file then I need to know so i can start on that but I was hoping to use some of all this phaff in the new frameworks usefully.

Timeout Using SQLite - Create A Database And Several Tables - To Populate The Tables With Data From Arrays

Jul 25, 2012

I am using VS2008 and SQLite. I have created a database and several tables and am attempting to populate the tables with data from arrays.

The following code (example) works fine but stops after it inserts 30 to 50 records. I am running the VB code in debug mode and when it stops, I press pause to see where it is. It stops on "SQLcommand.ExecuteNonQuery()" and when I press continue (F5) it will insert another 30 to 50 records.

I do not get an error message. Is this a timeout issue? How do I keep the loop running to the end of the array?

Following is example code.

SQLconnect As New SQLite.SQLiteConnection()

Dim SQLcommand As SQLiteCommand

I do a "My.Settings.Save" when the application exits, and barring the "serializers not found" errors in the IDE, no other errors occur. When I run my application as an exe, it behaves the same way..

Asp.net - Storing A Custom Object In A Web Application

Jun 14, 2012

I am at a new company and I am building a wizard for a web app, (.Net/4.0). The user goes to a few separate screens during the wizard process and must return to the original screen before completion of the wizard. This is different from how they normally do this. But this is how it is TO BE DONE.

One option is to store the result of each panel in the main screen in the DB. So then, when the user leaves & redirects back. I could check for a querystring then call a datareader and populate original values appropriately.

Storing Application Variables In An External File?

Jul 8, 2009

I have been tasked to create an application, for which the requirements may change over time. This application will be a data entry Windows application,of which multiple copies will be running. All data will be written to text (.CSV) files for validation before being uploaded to a remote mainframe system (iSeries). My application needs to store certain variable information in an external text (or XML) file; for example, the file path to shared resources (which may change over time),as well as the specific data fields required by the mainframe system.

My questionsare these: what is considered the best practice for accomplishing such a task, and how would I accomplish it?I am completely new to XML, so I don't even know where to begin, although I am sure that XML is the path to follow for what I am trying to accomplish.

Storing Access 07 Data On VB 08?

The idea of this is that I'm creating a wage calculator and the employees are stored in a database and can be viewed on a vb form, however, I now need to use the data of their pay/hr to be used on another form to calculate the wage.I have tried to declare a public variable across the two separate forms, and on the button that takes you to the other to set this variable as the contents of the text box which is displaying the pay/hr using the following

Public Class ManageUsers
Public HrlyRate As Decimal 'Declaring global variable to use between forms

'Some other code in between relating to rest of the stuff on the form

Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
RatePerHourTextBox.Text = HrlyRate 'Saving private variable to global variable
Calculation.Show()
End Sub
End Class

Then on the other form I have used this code to do the calculation:

Public Class Calculation
Private Sub calculation_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
End Sub
