Storing Classes In Separate Files?

Mar 18, 2012

In Java you can store a class in a separate file and instantiate it from a method in another file as long as the class file is in the same directory but this doesn't seem to work in Visual Basic.

Storing Data In Classes?

Apr 25, 2012

I have propetie get set classes, and a constructor to quickly set them all.The only concern I have is that the byval in the constructor class and the byval in the set() properties, might be inefficient because the parameter is copied twice? Should I use ByRef? Or is that too dangerous?

.net - Storing An Object To Use In Multiple Classes?

Mar 23, 2010

I am wondering the best way to store an object in memory that is used in a lot of classes throughout an application. We have multiple databases, 1 per customer. We also have a master table and each row is detailed information about the databases such as database name, server IP it's located and a few config settings.

I have an application that loops through those multiple databases and runs some updates on them. The settings I mentioned above are updated each loop iteration into memory. The application then runs through series of processes that include multiple classes using this data. The data never changes during the processes, only during the loop iteration.

The variables are related to a customer, so I have them stored in a customer class. I suppose I could make all of the members shared or should I use a singleton for the customer class? I've never actually used a singleton, only read they are good in this type of situation. Are there better solutions to this type of scenario? Also, I could have plans for this application to be multithreaded later.

ASP.Net - Accessing Controls From Separate Classes?

Jun 23, 2010

I have an ASP.NET Web Site I am creating in Visual Web Developer 2008 Express using Visual Basic as the language. It is actually a rewrite-with-mods of an existing ASP script and I'm trying to chew what I've bitten off. I created my page with a text box (txtOutput) on it and since the end product is very complex, and it's generally good practice to separate like functions, I have created 4 separate classes in the App_Code section. My main page is Sync.aspx and has a code file Sync.aspx.vb with it. One of my code files is SyncDatabases.vb and in it I have created

Public Class SyncDB

In that class I have created some routines such as

Public Function ReadMSDB(ByVal SQLString as string) as Boolean

In this routine I want to put information in my text box txtOutput on the main form (the default - Form1).

My problem is that if I try:

Form1.txtOutput.Text = "Hello world"

or just

txtOutput.Text = "Hello world"

it says Name 'Form1' (or 'txtOutput') is not declared. I am sure I am missing something simple but have no clue what it is. I assume it's the fact that the write command is in a file (class?) outside the file (class?) containing the page itself but I don't know how to address it properly.

Forms :: Multi Threading With Separate Classes

May 7, 2011

I'm trying to dive into what I consider a deeper end of VB.net to see how far I can go with it. I have a project created, ironically called "My First Server". The aim of this is to create a server which can handle multi clients but additionally isn't the commonly shown tutorial setup of a console application. So it is created as a Windows Form application. The main form (Public Class PrimaryForm) consists of only one control which is a listbox control. This is named LogOutput.

Storing Files In Database Vs Doing So In Filesystem?

Jan 30, 2009

I am in front of a great dilemma whether to store files in Database or doing it the standard way. I would choose the second option, but my application will be used by multiple users, so I am doing it by Web Services.

On the one hand, storing in database will be very useful as every user would have access to everything very fast, not caring about file paths, locations and so on.

On the other hand, if this table consists of 1000 files, wouldn't it be a bad idea as there should be some performance loss?

At the present moment, I am using mysql as database, but I am thinking of moving to SQL Server, but I suppose this is not DB Issue.

XML Files - Storing Information For Application

I am making a program that stores information for my applications. There are 4 main things I need in the XML file, the login information (User name and password), Application names and keys, and the owner of the application (who bought it). The program allows the user to enter as many applications and owners as they want and once login information is correct it loads the data. Then on exit all the data saves to a XML file.

My XML file looks like this

Forms - .net Controls In Separate Files?

Aug 8, 2011

VB.Net Windows forms feature controls that are often dragged from the toolbox onto the form. The code for the control goes right into the form. Usually this is great, but is it possible to write the code for a UI control (like a panel) into a separate file which can then be imported or otherwise included into the main Form Class?

Context (a.k.a. long version): I have a form with an unchanging column of navigation buttons on the left hand side. The rest of the form is taken up by different panels, which in turn have different controls of their own. Clicking the different buttons on the left should cause these different panels to appear (clicking button "A" brings up panel "A"; button "B" brings up panel "B", etc.), but the left-hand menu should stay unchanged.

I'm having a hard time implementing this design in an elegant way in VB.Net. If I make each panel a separate Form, I have to duplicate the code that builds the unchanging left-hand menu in every file, which is terrible. I tried using inherited forms so the separate panels would inherit the left-hand menu from a master form, but that means each click on the menu sprouts the new form in a new window, and although the left-hand menu is inherited, the menu that I clicked and the identical-looking menu in the new window are not the same objects in memory and have no knowledge of each other.

I just want one window with central content that changes based on what you click on the left-hand side. A solution to this would be for the panels to be just that - panels - and not separate forms as I'm currently doing it. But this gets messy organizationally because the code for all of the panels has to be in the one massive master file. Hence the short form of my question (see above): How can I code a panel in a separate file and then bring it into the fold of the main form?

C# - Storing Static Files To Be Shared Among Azure Roles

Sep 13, 2011

I'm trying to host some static files for access by an ASP.Net web role and a separate data worker role that are both running on the same deployment (they use a global static interface).

However, I'm unsure how exactly to 'host' them, I've tried using virtual folders via HttpRuntime.AppDomainAppPath, but it only occasionally works in debug mode. The files also don't seem to get packaged into the deployment packages made by VS vis CSPack (though this might be a separate issue, is it possible to fix this too?)

The static files in question are actually WordNet, which I'm using through WordNet.Net, If that makes any difference. I also need the solution to work in both the cloud deployment and the emulator (if possible).

Errors Concerning Classes In Other Files?

Apr 27, 2012

I'm using MS Visual Basic 2010 Express. The project requires me to refer to a class in another file, which is all well and fine, but it tells me that "Length" is not a member of the file class "Rectangle", when it plainly is. And it's only "Length" and "GetArea", not any of the other variables I refer to. I would've tried to look it up, if I even knew what I was looking for, but this problem has stumped me! I'll add the snippet of code that I'm trying to refer to the "Length" and "GetArea" with, as well as the parts of code that those two are in the "Rectangle" file.

'displays cost of sod
Dim floor As New Rectangle
Dim dblPriceSqYd As Double

[code]....

As you can see, it's obviously there. The code for the "Width" is exactly the same as the "Length" with a few name changes. My problem here is: I can't figure out why it's having trouble calling those two, when it calls the "Width" just fine. I've tried changing around the names, and nothing seems to work.

How To Import Two Separate Excel Files Into The Same Data Grid View

Right now if I sort the column from file1 in datagrid view all the other columns in THIS datagridview1 are also sorted in relation to column2. What I want is that the columns in file2 will also sort according to file1.

Save Datetimepicker Value Of Date And Time In Two Separate Text Files?

Jun 12, 2011

I want to save datetimepicker value of date and time in two separate text files. Currently, when I select a date from datetimepicker and save it in a text file it saves both date and time as below:

5/11/2011 8:25:06 PM What I would like to happen is as below: Datefile.txt saves 5/11/2011 Timefile.txt saves 8:25:06 PM Alternative solution that can work for me would be, if the time (only the TIME) can be modified after saving as below: saved datetime into text file is 5/11/2011 8:25:06 PM

How can I modify the time only to say 12:00:00 PM. By doing so I would like to keep time as 12:00:00 but date can be changed by the user using the datetime picker.

Visual Studio - Manage Multiple Files That Are Part Of One Class - Classes, Modules?

Sep 23, 2009

My VB project is large enough that it requires several files. It was originally developed as a Console App and I created each file as a MODULE. All modules could use subroutines, data structures and constants from other MODULES and everything worked fine. I needed to add basic windowing to the app and this required that the app be converted from a Console App to a Windows Forms App. The main window is Form1 which is not a MODULE but a CLASS. The problem is that some MODULE based functions cannot access subroutines, data and constants that are defined within the CLASS Form1 unless they are incorporated into the CLASS file and this makes the CLASS file very large. If I add a new Class file to the project, it also cannot interoperate with Class Form1 in the same way that multi-MODULE code interoperates.

How does one spread CLASS code across several files and still allow it to interoperate as if it were in a single file? Alternatively, how does one create several CLASS files that operate the way multiple MODULE files operate.I am sure that there are all kinds of best practices that I am violating but the goal to to get some prototype software working and interfaced to some lab equipment.

The problem created here is that I have an event against one of the objects that appear in the other TabPages, but because the same code is used to create any new tab pages, the event will only work on the newest tab page, if that makes sense? By the way these objects that appear on the other TabPages are properties at the top so events can be handled against them in the respective subroutine.
