Accessing Classes In A Separate Project

Dec 6, 2010

I have coded two seperate VB.net windows forms application as two seperate projects in seperate solutions. I now want to combine one project called "Reporting" into the other project called "AnalysisApp" and be able to call the Reporting apps main form. The Reporting app utilies a whole load of controls from DevExpress which are not included in the "AnalysisApp" I have added references in "AnalysisApp" to the DevEpress controls and also to the Reporting app, as well as combining the Reporting app into the same solution, but when I build the "AnalysisApp" it fails saying that it cannot find the DevExpress DLLs

ASP.Net - Accessing Controls From Separate Classes?

Jun 23, 2010

I have an ASP.NET Web Site I am creating in Visual Web Developer 2008 Express using Visual Basic as the language. It is actually a rewrite-with-mods of an existing ASP script and I'm trying to chew what I've bitten off. I created my page with a text box (txtOutput) on it and since the end product is very complex, and it's generally good practice to separate like functions, I have created 4 separate classes in the App_Code section. My main page is Sync.aspx and has a code file Sync.aspx.vb with it. One of my code files is SyncDatabases.vb and in it I have created

Public Class SyncDB

In that class I have created some routines such as

Public Function ReadMSDB(ByVal SQLString as string) as Boolean

In this routine I want to put information in my text box txtOutput on the main form (the default - Form1).

My problem is that if I try:

Form1.txtOutput.Text = "Hello world"

or just

txtOutput.Text = "Hello world"

it says Name 'Form1' (or 'txtOutput') is not declared. I am sure I am missing something simple but have no clue what it is. I assume it's the fact that the write command is in a file (class?) outside the file (class?) containing the page itself but I don't know how to address it properly.

Storing Classes In Separate Files?

In Java you can store a class in a separate file and instantiate it from a method in another file as long as the class file is in the same directory but this doesn't seem to work in Visual Basic.

Imports System.ThreadingPublic Class C_EventCollector Dim oThread As Thread Public Sub New() oThread = New Thread(AddressOf Me.BackgroundProcess) End Sub Private Sub BackgroundProcess() Console.WriteLine(Now.ToString) oThread.Sleep(10000) End SubEnd Class

What I want is execute BackgroundProcess() every tenth second. For testing purpose I print out current date and time to the console. Using this thread BackgroundProcess() only executes once.

Forms :: Multi Threading With Separate Classes

May 7, 2011

I'm trying to dive into what I consider a deeper end of VB.net to see how far I can go with it. I have a project created, ironically called "My First Server". The aim of this is to create a server which can handle multi clients but additionally isn't the commonly shown tutorial setup of a console application. So it is created as a Windows Form application. The main form (Public Class PrimaryForm) consists of only one control which is a listbox control. This is named LogOutput.

Accessing DataSet From Various Classes?

Feb 1, 2012

For a little background, I am trying to make an application 'plug-in' based, more or less. Now, I have a business logic .dll, invoked by the main form, that will run and pull some data and spit out a dataset. I then have various other classes/.dlls that work of this dataset.

Accessing Instances Of Classes

Jul 25, 2011

I am trying to make a pretty complicated, layered program.I have my main form which creates an instance of another form (addValue and myAddValue). From myAddValue I then want to access a few other classes to do various verification and other bits of code. Here though I have a problem. With the form ContactDetails, it just can't seem to read myAddValue.txtName or the others. If I try and read AddValue normally it says about it not being able to access a non-shared member (Expected that this doesn't work, it was just an attempt at something different)How do I read myAddValue from a class which isn't the one that created and isn't the one that it is an instance of?

Accessing Objects From Other Classes In ASP.NET

In the main file.aspx.vb I can call a function from the button handler and in that function I can have [code]I have a bunch of functions in several other classes. For instance I have a class named AbleCommerce that does some database functions. These functions are called from my main class. In those functions, however, I have no visibility of txtOutput. All of my classes are, unfortunately, in the default namespace which I understand is not optimal but didn't seem to impact this issue.

Asp.net - Accessing Values From Partial Classes?

Sep 2, 2011

I'm still learning so this might be completely wrong. I have built a multi-user web application for internal purposes. I have split my code up to make it more manageable and have run into some problems. I suspect that I have done something very silly!

I have a class in a separate file (quoteStatus.vb) in App_Code here it is:

Imports Microsoft.VisualBasic
Imports System.Data.SqlClient
Imports System.Data
Public Class quoteStatusHelper

[Code]...

This seems really wrong, as the value seems to be held in the partial class after the first run. So if I have two users accessing the class the public shared dim is changed for both users! There must be a better way to do this. I have looked everywhere and I'm more confused now than when I started off..How can I make QuoteStatus in the partial class unique to every user and access it from my code.

Accessing About 100 Sites At Once Use Classes Or Subs For Each Site?

Mar 1, 2012

I have about 100 websites that I am going to be accessing to scrape some data from (weather, time, etc). When I go to code these babies there will be an abundance of sub routines that I will be creating. They each are going to be accessing pretty much the same type of data.

Should I put them into a Class some how and acces them that way or should I just use Subs and then call them into the Document Completed section of my web browser to run the code? Still sort of confused on the whole Class vs. Sub Routine thing.

Accessing A Form In One Project From Another Project?

Feb 11, 2010

I have a number of projects in a solution and want to be able to access forms in all of the projects from a form in the main project. I thought of doing this to keep each segment of the solution manageble. If something goes seriously wrong in one of the projects it is easier to fix that starting from scratch with the whole solution.I have found numerous suggestions on this topic from "It cannot be done" to suggestions that do not work. The closest that I have come and still does not work is as follows:

Imports VAT_List.Form1 'This is Form1 in Project 2
Public Class Form1 ' This is Form1 in the Main Project
Private Sub ListsToolStripMenuItem_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles ListsToolStripMenuItem.Click

How do I create separate files in a VB Express 2010 project?[code]...

Using Resource Expressions With The Resources In A Separate Project?

Oct 26, 2010

I'm pretty sure this is something super easy, but how do i access a resource that is in a separate project using the expression syntax?I thought it would be like so:

<%$ Resources:SomeNamespace.Resources.Web, PleaseSelectAnImage %>

where SomeNamespace.Resources is the project that the resources are located in.

i normally just do <%= SomeNamespace.Resources.Web.PleaseSelectAnImage%> but i need to have this inside a control. <kw:SlickUpload ID="SlickUpload1" runat="server"
ValidExtensions=".png, .gif, .jpg"
InvalidExtensionMessage="<%$ Resources:SomeNamespace.Resources.Resources.Web, PleaseSelectAnImage %>" >

so when i just do what i normally do, it puts <%= SomeNamespace.Resources.Web.PleaseSelectAnImage%>" literally.my project name is SomeNamespace.Resources. the resource file name is Web. and the key is PleaseSelectAnImage.

Accessing DataSets Throughout Project?

Dec 3, 2011

I have declared a dataset (let's call it 'Fred') as public in a VARs module. In the main form in a sub routine called at the start of the project I connect to an Excel spreadsheet and read it into the 'Fred' dataset into one table (called 'Table') I then bind the dataset table to a datagridview and I can see the spreadsheet. Which is very nice :-)

Having loaded the dataset I want to be able to get some values so I created a button and used the following

msg = Fred.Tables("Table").Rows(0).Item("Name")

I think this should get the value in the first row and in the column called 'Name' in the table called 'Table'

But I get an error when I click the button 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object' which I think means I need to use the 'New' keyword...

So I added to the button

Dim Fred = New DataSet

But I get the same error.

Now I have to admit that I've never really got my head around how to use the 'New' keyword and would have hoped to be able to get data from a dataset through my entire project - especially as I've declared it as 'Public'. Surely if I use 'New' all over the place then I create new datasets

.net - Using Functions And Classes In Another Project?

Mar 12, 2012

I'm refactoring my VB project into 2 projects, one being a utility library that I want to share with future projects. My solution's layout is like this:[code].....

util is created as a class library, and the member files added into it. I've then added util into the main project's references. However, when I try to call functions in util.vb from my main project files, I get build errors like this:

error BC30451: Name 'LogException' is not declared.

error BC30002: Type 'VarFile' is not defined.

These are defined in util.vb, and it compiled fine when it was part of the main project. The declarations look like this: (I've trimmed out the details)[code].....

I can add util.vb "as link" into the main project and it will solve all the build errors, but that seems to defeat the purpose of refactoring out the class library - I would like to develop this library separately, and not always have to keep track of which file links I haven't added in my main project.

Keep Each Module Separate And Call EXE's Or Should Create One Large Project?

Event Handling - Using Classes In DLL In GUI Project?

Mar 11, 2009

I've 2 projects- one containing GUI and another a DLL project containing some implementations. I'm using Classes in DLL in my GUI. All that I wanna do is when some results are manipulated in the DLL, the final output from DLL should be made available in the RichTextBox present in the GUI project. I tried the WithEvents and also Add Handler. But its not working. In the DLL, I added...

Public Event Report(ByVal info As String)
RaiseEvent Report("The folder has been Copied.") In the GUI, I added...
Public WithEvents Log As RTAF_DLL.CServer // RTAF_DLLis the project name.
CServer is the class // in which the event has been writtenLog = New RTAF_DLL.CServer
Protected Sub Log_Report(ByVal info As String) Handles Log.ReportMsgBox(info)
// Even this is not getting printedMe.RichTextBox2.AppendText(info)End Sub

The problem here is I'm not sure whether or not the event is getting raised. But I set a breakpoint and found that the Event is not handled.I tried including Imports System.Runtime.InteropServicesBut its not working.

VS 2005 Referencing Classes In Another Project?

Jun 30, 2010

I'm making an application that will be available as both a Windows App and an ASP.Net App. The web app has a much scaled-down version of the functionality of the window app. I want to reference the classes contained with the windows app from my web app. The thing is, my classes in the windows app may have some modifications: if I reference them in my web app, will this pick up the changes made automatically? Also, referencing the project is for development work, when I go to deploy the web app, I will probably need to reference the classes as dll's. So the next questions are: 1. Is this the right way to go about doing this?
2. How do I make the Classes I have into self-contained dll files?

ComboBox + Enter = Ding - Created A New Separate Class Within Project

Jun 21, 2010

I didn't think this would be a problem, but it appears that others also search for this solution. There is an annoying DING! when hitting the Enter key in a ComboBox in VB.Net so I sought solutions. Here is the solution I am working with. I created a new seperate Class within my Project...

Public Class ClasscboBox
Inherits ComboBox

[CODE]...

Looks good, but I am having a problem calling it from the main project. Here is what I have tried using...

Dim objcboBox As New ClasscboBox
objcboBox.OnKeyPress(KeyPressEventArgs)

However, it says thatKeyPressEventArgs is a Type and cannot be used as an Expression. I tried 'e' but no go. I am a little ahead of my classes (no pun intended) so I am likely missing something about what I am doing wrong.

I have three comboboxes so I though this would best suit my needs in the interests of writting decent code and not populating each call with repeating code.
