VS 2005 Referencing Classes In Another Project?
Jun 30, 2010
I'm making an application that will be available as both a Windows App and an ASP.Net App. The web app has a much scaled-down version of the functionality of the window app. I want to reference the classes contained with the windows app from my web app. The thing is, my classes in the windows app may have some modifications: if I reference them in my web app, will this pick up the changes made automatically? Also, referencing the project is for development work, when I go to deploy the web app, I will probably need to reference the classes as dll's. So the next questions are: 1. Is this the right way to go about doing this?
2. How do I make the Classes I have into self-contained dll files?

I've got a project folder which contains all my forms and another project folder where I keep my classes. The forms folder references the classes folder.I can reference the classes folder from the forms folder alright but I have problems when I try to reference a form from a class. For example, if I pass one of my form objects to a class, the class doesn't recognize its type.VB doesn't allow circular referencing so how can I get around this ?

I have a project that references two DLL files in the system 32 directory as COM references. The files are certenroll.dll and certcli.dll which are included in the system32 directory as part of the OS. My app is a console application that I'd like to have as a standalone exe. It seems that the these files are converted to something like Interop.CERTENROLLLib.dll and Interop.CERTCLIENTLib.dll and dropped in the bin directory for my project. Since I want the app to be a standalone exe able to run on other PC's I'd rather see the app reference the original DLL files in the system32 directory and not have to carry these dependency files around with it.

I have written a program in VB.NET 2008 Express that references a .NET managed dll. I simply added a reference to the dll to the project. I then 'Imports' the dll at the beginning of the program and then can use it. Everything works fine when I am running the program in debug mode (and it uses the dll as intended), but as soon as I go to build the project I get an errors that it "Could not reslove this reference" and "Namespace of type specifier in the Imports 'ModbusTCP' doesn't contain any public member or cannot be found." The dll is located in a different location on my hard drive to the project location, but this was referenced when I 'added reference'.

I'm fairly new to VB.NET and I'm currently playing around with user controls, figuring out good programming practices. As far as I understand, to create and use a UserControl, I need to create a project with the UserControl in it, then build the project and use that DLL (add it to Toolbox or otherwise). My question is this: Is there a way a have a project (a Form with a bunch of things on it) that contains a UserControl written in a *.vb file inside that same Project? If you do that, the DLL (in my case) never gets produced, possibly because the UserControl is never used and building it is simply omitted. Is it perhaps a bad practice to do that altogether? It simply makes sense to me to keep a UserControl as a part of the Project that uniquely uses it. Is there a reason not to do that?

So I have this asp.net web application that I renamed.I changed the assembly name, root namespace, changed all the aspx files Inherits lines to have the new name. But for some reason it is still references the old assembly name. So the main page loads but there is a button that submits to pgRequest.aspx and I get this error in the event viewer. So I recreated the solution, project and did add existing item for all the forms.[code]

I was directed to update an old VB6 dll to VB .net as we are moving away from COM objects. The dll contains one function that does a bunch of high math calculations. I opened up a new class project in VS 2005, Imported System.Math, and then basically copied the function code from the VB6 project into the new class. When compiling, I made the assemble COM-Visible and also checked the Register for COM Interop in the project properties. I then copied the dll and tlb files to Windows/system32 and tried to register using Regasm.exe.
Even though I'm using the correct version for .Net 2, I still get error RegAsm : error RA0000 : Failed to load 'C:WINDOWSsystem32eagetairmiles.dll' because it is not a valid .NET assembly. When attempting to add a reference to it in my new .Net project, I see it in the COM tab - but in the location it was developed in, and I receive the following error: Converting the type library to a .Net assembly failed. Type library mydllname was exported from a CLR assembly and cannot be re-imported as a CLR assembly.

I have a VB6 app that I'm updating to .Net. This app interfaces with PeachTree Accounting through there type library, which I have a reference. When I try to create a reference to Peachtree in .Net,
1. Select References from Myproject
2. Click "Add"
3. Select the "COM" tab
4. Select the "Peachtree Accounting 17.0 Type Library"
When I add the reference, the Path says "<The system cannot find the reference specified>".
There is something different about the way the path is listed. All the other paths are listed like "C:Program Files..." but the Peachtree library is listed like "C:PROGRA~1SagePEACHT~1PAWLegacy.dll"
This is how the old DOS use to list names longer than 8 characters. In my VB6 app the reference path is "C:Program FilesSagePeachtreePAWLegacy.dll"I tested other references with simular paths like "c:progra~1..." and they work fine. It's probably something else. I'm fairly new to .Net so can anyone point me in the right direction?

I am new to .net and was wondering if there are any projects which have sets of vb.net classes online which i can use. For example we have Flourish — PHP Unframework which has lots of php classes therefore a programmer doesn't not to replicate code on each project. Is there a asp.net (vb) resource website or any open source project which has built in vb.net functions.

I'm refactoring my VB project into 2 projects, one being a utility library that I want to share with future projects. My solution's layout is like this:[code].....
util is created as a class library, and the member files added into it. I've then added util into the main project's references. However, when I try to call functions in util.vb from my main project files, I get build errors like this:
error BC30451: Name 'LogException' is not declared.
error BC30002: Type 'VarFile' is not defined.
These are defined in util.vb, and it compiled fine when it was part of the main project. The declarations look like this: (I've trimmed out the details)[code].....
I can add util.vb "as link" into the main project and it will solve all the build errors, but that seems to defeat the purpose of refactoring out the class library - I would like to develop this library separately, and not always have to keep track of which file links I haven't added in my main project.

I've 2 projects- one containing GUI and another a DLL project containing some implementations. I'm using Classes in DLL in my GUI. All that I wanna do is when some results are manipulated in the DLL, the final output from DLL should be made available in the RichTextBox present in the GUI project. I tried the WithEvents and also Add Handler. But its not working. In the DLL, I added...
Public Event Report(ByVal info As String)
RaiseEvent Report("The folder has been Copied.") In the GUI, I added...
Public WithEvents Log As RTAF_DLL.CServer // RTAF_DLLis the project name.
CServer is the class // in which the event has been writtenLog = New RTAF_DLL.CServer
Protected Sub Log_Report(ByVal info As String) Handles Log.ReportMsgBox(info)
// Even this is not getting printedMe.RichTextBox2.AppendText(info)End Sub
The problem here is I'm not sure whether or not the event is getting raised. But I set a breakpoint and found that the Event is not handled.I tried including Imports System.Runtime.InteropServicesBut its not working.

the client has asked for all forms and classes to be hidden from the main project, so when he sells it, they will only be able to see part of the project and not all the classes and forms. My Solution: I have created another project called project2, and added all the forms and classes from main project, fixed all errors and compiled it.I deleted all the forms from the main project and added a reference so that it gets all the forms from the other project by referencing the dll file, but it does not seem to work and get a lot of errors.is there an easier way of hiding the forms and classes from the main project or do I need to do more then just add the reference.

I am in college taking computer programming and we are now in multiple classes and forms. It was very hard to get ahold of at first but now that I understand it a bit better I am curious as to how often in a professional enviornment do developers create multiple classes for a project? Besides the use of custom functions what else is beneficial for it?

We are trying to write an application that uses the NServiceBus library in a VB.NET environment. We've been stymied by errors similar to the following: Reference required to assembly 'NServiceBus,Version=2.0.0.1071, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=9fc386479f8a226c' containing the implemented interface 'NServiceBus.IMessageHandler`1'. Add one to your project. Our project already includes references to NServiceBus.dll and NServiceBus.Core.dll from the same NServiceBus 2.0 RC2 distribution.

Any ideas about how to solve this problem? (And, yes, my preferred solution is switching to C#, but no, that's not an acceptable one at the moment.)

I have tried this question several times, sometimes a little in the face of MS VB teams but with no constructive answers. Perhaps with too much rant. I suspect that VB.NET does not allow me to do what I can easly do in VB5.0. The VB team should easily be able to supply the information I need, but have not yet answered the questions. I want to do a lot of work on very large bitmaps (20 Mp or more; 80Mb or more ARGB) using arrays for access. This I used to do in VB5.0 using the SAFEARRAY and BITMAP STRUCTURES. NOT the corresponding .NET CLASSES. But I now need to use an SDK requiring .NET. However, through lack of wisdom, the VB team dropped 5 critical resources on the move to VB.NET - VarPtr, VarPtrArray, the 2 structures and CopyMemory. The SAFEARRAY CLASS seems to lack a set method for array data and the BITMAP CLASS seems to lack both get and set methods for data. On building a .NET solution using VB.NET, c#.NET and C++.NET projects I could not locate the set and get methods. Interop could not upgrade my VB5.0 to VB2005 - presumably on account of these 5 problems. I was surprised that even C++ suffered too. .NET hurts. So, first off, two critcal simple questions: A) Bearing in mind that much of the .NET is tinsel-wrapped APIs, does a pointer to an array still point to a defining SAFEARRAY STRUCTURE of the original format (NOT of course to a first element of an array). If that is so, I am lucky for I can then fill and use (perhaps) my own SAFEARRAY STRUCTURE by memory manipulation in C++. B) If the same applies to a bitmap pointer I can then perhaps do the same with BITMAP STRUCTURES. If that can be done I can hopefully work in a .NET solution containing C++ (for the pointer and mmory work) and VB2005 (for the rest of the work). I can then 1) in VB define two empty byte-arrays GLOBAL in VB.NET- Pic1() and Pic2(). They do not need to be dimensioned. SAFE FROM GC 2) in VB define two GLOBAL SAFEARRAYS to match the arrays, one with one and another with 2 dims matching the bitmap in size. SAFE FROM GC 3) move ByRef the 4 objects to VC++. STILL SAFE FROM GC, LEFT EXACTLY WHERE THEY WERE. 3) copy the BITMAP data pointers to the data pointers of the SAFEARRAYS. DOES NOT MOVE ANYTHING. 4) copy the addresses of the SAFEARRAYS to the corresponding arrays STILL DOES NOT MOVE ANYTHING, BUT JOB DONE. And then I will be able to process the images in seconds rather than minutes after moving only 4 4-byte numbers. I would welcome alternative sequences, provided they DO NOT involve put and set pixels or array elements on the trivial side and do not involve moving 80Mb of image data between "safe" and "unsafe" memory on the Herculian side. Else, as the Pic() ans Safearrays MUST point somehow to structures, WHAT EXACTLY ARE THEY, AND WHERE? I want to access them. If I can't overcome these 5 silly MS blunders I'll just have to build two uncoupled projects - one in VB5.0 and the other in VB/VC++ .NET. I'm not going to get involved myself with tinsel and gladwrap workarounds.

I'm using the cryptography classes in .net to encrypt and decrypt files. When I encrypt a txt file, then decrypt in my code it works fine. But when I encrypt an xml file and try to decrypt it within my code I get an error saying "padding is invalid and cannot be removed." I am setting the padding during both the encryption and decryption as:
PaddingMode.PKCS7. Do you think the file being an xml file has something to do with the error that's occuring? Also, should I or should I not be setting the padding for both encryption and decryption?

I've read that modules are basically shared classes. For a module though, you can call a method directly without prefixing the module name. So I can do this: methodTest("abc", mod1Enum.enum2)But for a class with shared members I have to fully qualify the method call, and in this case fully qualify the enum:[code]In our conversion from VB6 to .NET the need to fully qualify all calls like this might be an argument for us to bring our VB6 modules over as modules instead of converting them to classes.

I have written multiple programs in the past that deal with cad data. Points, lines, arcs, etc. For each program I ended up creating slightly different versions of some really base classes like a class that defines a point:
<Serializable()> Public Class Point
Public x As Double = 0
Public y As Double = 0
Public z As Double = 0
End Class
My question is how would I use that class in such a way that it could be in a namespace and imported into any future project that I write?
