Referencing User Controls That Are Contained Within The Same Project?
Feb 25, 2011
I'm fairly new to VB.NET and I'm currently playing around with user controls, figuring out good programming practices. As far as I understand, to create and use a UserControl, I need to create a project with the UserControl in it, then build the project and use that DLL (add it to Toolbox or otherwise).My question is this: Is there a way a have a project (a Form with a bunch of things on it) that contains a UserControl written in a *.vb file inside that same Project? If you do that, the DLL (in my case) never gets produced, possibly because the UserControl is never used and building it is simply omitted. Is it perhaps a bad practice to do that altogether? It simply makes sense to me to keep a UserControl as a part of the Project that uniquely uses it. Is there a reason not to do that?

at some points, I need to call the same method on those controls (ex. user presses the clear button on the big control, I want to call the clear f(x) on each of the controls)I thought to toss the controls in a collection, and then be able to handle them something like this:
nextturns out, and I should have realized, methods and properties of controls are not exposed when treated this way. The only thing that can be seen is the stuff that the base class (control, I guess) has.

Suppose that one has a panel an inside it there are many buttons with Dock=Top. The button would tend to be stacked on top of the panel. How can I get a reference for each button from top to bottom? The button would be created in a random order, so I don't think that using the index of each button in the Controls collection of the Panel would suffix.

I have created a usercontrol that contains two rectangle shapes to create a unique button effect and a rounded-corner rectangle shape serving as a border to provide a look similar to a group box. It also contains two labels, one for use with a Text property of the control and the other to indicate the status of expansion of the control. The control is designed to collapse itself when the "button" is clicked leaving only the "button" visible. Clicking it again toggles this affect. I've dubbed it an ExpansionBar. It is also designed to be a container control so that I can add controls to it and allow these to disappear when the bottom portion collapses. This seems to work great! The problem is that the controls contained in this usercontrol cannot be accessed during runtime. In other words, I can add a checkbox to it and it will disappear correctly when the control collapses, but I can't select the checkbox to check it... same thing with any other controls, you can see, but can't touch.

I'm working on a winform which contains several controls like textboxes, radio buttons, datagridviews... All of these controls have been added to a main group box called gbDataEntry. My problem is when the user is seeing the form, I set gbDataEntry.Enabled = False but I want to enable some controls like DataGridviews so the user can scroll them. After disabling gbDataGridview I set DataGridView1.Enabled = True but it seems that the datagridview does not respond to this line. Why?

I created a simple custom controlled Panel for double buffering. When I use the control in my toolbox it works just fine, but when I attempt to add controls inside the panel those controls aren't staying when I move the panel around. My custom panel isn't acting as the controls' parent. I verified this by looking in the designer code.
I tested a standard panel on the same form and it works perfectly normal - as I drag the parent Panel the interior controls move along with it. It is only my custom Panel which doesn't seem to detect when another control is placed within it.
Here is my constructor
Public Class DBPanel
Inherits System.Windows.Forms.PictureBox
Public Sub New()

I have 2 Forms in a VS 2010 Project. Form1 is the Startup Form and can, with intellisense see Form2, but NOT the Controls on Form2.
Form2 can with intellisnse, see Form1 AND the Controls on Form1.
Why can't Form1 see the Controls on Form2? I've not seen this issue before in VS or VB6.
The error message is :-
Reference to a non-shared member requires an object reference.
The Controls on Form2 have the Property of Friend.

I have a project that references two DLL files in the system 32 directory as COM references. The files are certenroll.dll and certcli.dll which are included in the system32 directory as part of the OS. My app is a console application that I'd like to have as a standalone exe. It seems that the these files are converted to something like Interop.CERTENROLLLib.dll and Interop.CERTCLIENTLib.dll and dropped in the bin directory for my project. Since I want the app to be a standalone exe able to run on other PC's I'd rather see the app reference the original DLL files in the system32 directory and not have to carry these dependency files around with it.

I have a program that allows the user to add steps to a process (tabpages in a control). All tabpages are generated on the fly by duplicating a "template" tabpage and consequently have the same control names such as textboxStepDesc. Here is the hierarchy of the controls to get to textboxStepDesc. Both TabPage1 and TabPage2 are in TabControl1
TabPage1
Panel1
textboxStepDesc
other fields
[code]....
Since textboxStepDesc exists in Panel1 in both TabPage1 and TabPage2, how do I specify that I want to retrieve the value of textboxStepDesc.text on tabpage2 vs. textboxStepDesc.text on tabpage1?

I'm making an application that will be available as both a Windows App and an ASP.Net App. The web app has a much scaled-down version of the functionality of the window app. I want to reference the classes contained with the windows app from my web app. The thing is, my classes in the windows app may have some modifications: if I reference them in my web app, will this pick up the changes made automatically? Also, referencing the project is for development work, when I go to deploy the web app, I will probably need to reference the classes as dll's. So the next questions are: 1. Is this the right way to go about doing this?
2. How do I make the Classes I have into self-contained dll files?

I have written a program in VB.NET 2008 Express that references a .NET managed dll. I simply added a reference to the dll to the project. I then 'Imports' the dll at the beginning of the program and then can use it. Everything works fine when I am running the program in debug mode (and it uses the dll as intended), but as soon as I go to build the project I get an errors that it "Could not reslove this reference" and "Namespace of type specifier in the Imports 'ModbusTCP' doesn't contain any public member or cannot be found." The dll is located in a different location on my hard drive to the project location, but this was referenced when I 'added reference'.

am trying trying to write some code for a ComboBox that does the following:
1. Allow the user to enter text into the combo box to type entries contained in the list source.
2. Enable autocomplete to assist the user in selecting entries in the list source, both from dropped down state and non dropped down state.
3. Restrict the user from typing an entry that doesn't exist in the list source.
My requirements are:
1. The ComboBox must run some code after a selection has been made or the user has finished typing an entry (not after the focus has been moved to another control)
2. The code must only run once after the user has made a selection from the combobox or has finished typing an entry
The problem: To achieve the above functionality, I had to run code on numerous event's. Sureley there is a better way, here are the events and the reason for the code:
SelectedIndexChanged:This is the code that is run when the user makes a selection. No Mystery here
KeyDown:
Must Run
If e.KeyCode = Keys.Return Then
ComboBox1_SelectedIndexChanged(Nothing, Nothing)
End If

Lets say that I had three TextBox's and they are named TextBox1, TextBox2, and TextBox3, is there a way to do like TextBox And Rand(1,3).Text = Nothing? Something similar to this where you click a button and it will choose at randomly a textbox to clear?I know I could do like Dim Number = Rand(1,3)if Number = 1 Then TextBox1.Text = Nothingend ifif Number = 2 Then TextBox1.Text = Nothingend ifor use else if and such, but I have 12 different textbox's, not three, so, I want to shorten the code, if you could do something like TextBox And Rand(1,12).Text = Nothing that would defenitely be way shorter, can you do anything like that to put together "TextBox" and the number to reference the control? I am not looking to use the full controls list to search for the right control nor to make an array that contains the controls, I just want to reference them without adding extra arrays or searhing for them.

This is a project I am working on written in Visual Basic, using Visual Studio 2005.I have a form (FrmMain) which contains a user control (CtrlDisplay). Within the user control (CtrlDisplay) is a list box which pulls information from a database. when you click on a button it checks another database to see if you have all the required components to build the object in the list box. If you dont have the parts, a dialog box (DiaAddToList) opens up to ask you if you would like to add the missing parts to your next order.
I had this all working perfectly when I was using forms and a MDI parent container. Now I am using a single form which swaps out user controls. the issue I am running in to is, the dialog box has the button "Add to next order", which is supposed to start routine to add the objects to the inventory. using forms, it was easy to do this, on DiaAddToList, under the sub when you click the add button, the code was FrmDisplay.AddList()
Now that I have switched it to user controls I tried to put CtrlDisplay.AddList(), and it is telling me "Reference to a non shared member requires an object reference". How do I reference the CtrlDisplay. It is already open and running on FrmMain. I tried to use "Imports.MyProject.CtrlDisplay" and that didnt work.
how I can reference this? It is starting to look like I will have to put the list boxes and routines into FrmMain, but that will end up with something like 200 boxes on one form, all overlapping and making it REAL confusing.

I went and created a tab containing a good amount of controls, most of which are contained within what I'll just call the top-level group box. Now I decide I'd like the text of the top-level group box to be bold, but nothing else. When I set the top-level group box's font to bold, however, all of the controls contained within it become bolded as well, which is what I don't want. I can set each individual control's bold property to false, but it seems like there should be an easier way to do this.

There is newer code in a follow up post. I suggest using the code in the later post rather than the code in this one. You can still read this post though. When designing a user interface, one should be conscious of how many individual controls are required to implement the functionality. In some cases an initial design may begin with many buttons or textboxes (for example) but then further review of
the actual required functionality allows for a reduction in the number of unique controls.
But other times, there isn't a better way (which will still make sense to the user of the application) then to have a series of many repeated controls. So in the cases where one can be certain that the best UI implementation for an application will require the use of multiple copies of a given control, then it often becomes necessary to maintain some method of managing all of those controls at various points
throughout the application. Doing so typically requires that one build up some collection of controls which can then be accessed by index in order to work with any given control; but this can lead to a lot of clutter in the code file which handles these control's events. For instance there will be some kind of collection declaration, some recursive routine to find all of the controls of interest, and then any number of event handler methods with long lists of Handles clauses, or additional code loops to wire up the event handling for each control.
Purpose Since most of this functionality could be considered a requirement regardless of the type of control being managed, or its required functionality, it may make sense to wrap all of the control management functionality into a single class. And since our first requirement is a collection of controls, then a base collection class could be the perfect starting point for our control manager. There are a number of existing thread around this topic, with some recent (at the time of this writing) ones being:[URL]..In this, and related, threads I have posted examples of a simple TextBoxManager and ButtonManager control. But again, with so much similar functionality required regardless of the control being managed, it would be technically possible to create a generic ControlManager(Of T As Control) class which can manage any type of control.
[Code]...
So in summary, one can facilitate managing a large number of user interface controls by building a "control manager" class which both encapsulates the list of control instances, and deals with adding and removing defined event handlers for every control it manages. The generic control manager class itself can be inherited and extended into a more specific class on a per-application basis in order to provide more application-specific functionality. We are trying to write an application that uses the NServiceBus library in a VB.NET environment. We've been stymied by errors similar to the following: Reference required to assembly 'NServiceBus,Version=2.0.0.1071, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=9fc386479f8a226c' containing the implemented interface 'NServiceBus.IMessageHandler`1'. Add one to your project.Our project already includes references to NServiceBus.dll and NServiceBus.Core.dll from the same NServiceBus 2.0 RC2 distribution.

Any ideas about how to solve this problem? (And, yes, my preferred solution is switching to C#, but no, that's not an acceptable one at the moment.)

I have some custom user controls in my .net winforms program that do not display correctly when the user has selected larger text size. This setting:
My controls look like this:
Instead of like this:
The bill to area and ship to area are both custom controls. I don't know if this is contributing to the problem but I do have code in each to scale the phone/fax areas to stretch nicely, like this code from the bill to control,
Private Sub panFaxPhone_Resize(sender As Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles panFaxPhone.Resize
panFax.Width = (panFaxPhone.Width / 2) - 1
panPhone.Width = (panFaxPhone.Width / 2) - 1
panFax.Left = panFaxPhone.Width - panFax.Width
End Sub
How can I get my controls to size correctly while still respecting the users choice for larger text (I don't want to just set the AutoScaleMode to None)? After playing with this for a long time it seems to be a problem with anchors in the child controls. See this below image, the inner black box is the control with its border turned on, the text boxes (like name) are anchored left and right and should stretch to fill the control, but don't.

I have established the project dependencies so that Project B is now Dependent on Project A. Also i added references to both projects to each other so that i can access controls on Project B forms through Project A (Like changing the value of a textbox on B through A). My problem is that whie trying to access controls on Project B Forms it doesnot show up.

I was able to include (add) an existing project to a current one. I finally got all the references and libraries in place, and everything works great. I decided to move forward with development and started adding some features...much to my surprise, when I debug none of the controls are there (In the form belonging to the added project)...
Do I need to develop the second project from it's original solution (and not from within the combined solution)?

Can I safely move ReferencePath information from a .vbproj.user (or .csproj.user) file into the corresponding project file? Note: All developers will be using developing from the same location on their machines.We'd like to allow users to maintain their own settings for other things, but have this basic info be setup once and checked into source control to be shared to all.
