Manage A Large Number Of Similar Controls In A User Interface (such As Button Or TextBox Controls)

Aug 23, 2011

There is newer code in a follow up post. I suggest using the code in the later post rather than the code in this one. You can still read this post though. When designing a user interface, one should be conscious of how many individual controls are required to implement the functionality. In some cases an initial design may begin with many buttons or textboxes (for example) but then further review of
the actual required functionality allows for a reduction in the number of unique controls.

But other times, there isn't a better way (which will still make sense to the user of the application) then to have a series of many repeated controls. So in the cases where one can be certain that the best UI implementation for an application will require the use of multiple copies of a given control, then it often becomes necessary to maintain some method of managing all of those controls at various points
throughout the application. Doing so typically requires that one build up some collection of controls which can then be accessed by index in order to work with any given control; but this can lead to a lot of clutter in the code file which handles these control's events. For instance there will be some kind of collection declaration, some recursive routine to find all of the controls of interest, and then any number of event handler methods with long lists of Handles clauses, or additional code loops to wire up the event handling for each control.

Purpose Since most of this functionality could be considered a requirement regardless of the type of control being managed, or its required functionality, it may make sense to wrap all of the control management functionality into a single class. And since our first requirement is a collection of controls, then a base collection class could be the perfect starting point for our control manager. There are a number of existing thread around this topic, with some recent (at the time of this writing) ones being:[URL]..In this, and related, threads I have posted examples of a simple TextBoxManager and ButtonManager control. But again, with so much similar functionality required regardless of the control being managed, it would be technically possible to create a generic ControlManager(Of T As Control) class which can manage any type of control.

[Code]...

So in summary, one can facilitate managing a large number of user interface controls by building a "control manager" class which both encapsulates the list of control instances, and deals with adding and removing defined event handlers for every control it manages. The generic control manager class itself can be inherited and extended into a more specific class on a per-application basis in order to provide more application-specific functionality. Slow Form Load (has Large Number Of Controls)

Nov 9, 2010

I wrote last week about a problem with an MDI program that had a large number of forms (each with a large number of controls on it) that was "sluggish" in loading and in switching between the child forms.I've attached an example program in VS2008 (though the actual app is VB2010)Rather than show the hardware control application with all of the text fields, and picture boxes acting as indicators, I made a simple program to show the point. This is exaggerated as this just loads 2000 or so text boxes on a form. In the real app I have ~ 200 assorted controls per form of picture boxes, scroll bars, text boxes, labels etc. Also, there is a large full screen .jpeg as the back ground of each form. All are generated at run time and are placed on the form in the New call of each form. (as in the sample attached)main issue seems to be the methodology I use to switch between child forms. I make the current form .visible = false, and the next.visible = true. I have used this as it "keeps the place" on each page if the user has scrolled or is looking at one section of the form. When the next form .visible = true happens I see the controls added in a "machine gun" fashion instead of all at once.

Control Recommendations - Controls At The Top Of It And A Large DataGridView Is Docked Below All The Controls

Nov 10, 2011

I have a maximized form that has controls at the top of it and a large DataGridView that is docked below all the controls. Its kind of like the Ribbon in MS Office. The controls cover about 1/4 of the screen at the top. I would like a way for the user to click a button to hide all the controls then automatically expand into the place the controls were so the user can view more data in the DataGridView and visa versa. For example, in MS Office Excel you can hide the ribbon by clicking a tiny button that has "^" on it.

I'm not very familiar with all the controls in Visual Studio so I would like to hear some recommendations. Is this situation ideal for a SplitContainer or ToolStripContainer or am I way off base here?

Manage Controls If There Are Many Many Controls Placed On The Forms?

Dec 10, 2006

I would like to know how do .net developers manage a large window application with a large number of controls, such as textbox , button, groupbox? I have seen a number of people do it this way : declare the controls as an array and initialize them one by one at run time . In this way it is easy to manage those controls because they can be accessed by array index; but this solution seems to require very good understanding of control's attribute such as its location, font etc. This could be a difficult task if the project is passed on to a less experienced developer and add changes to it.How do you deal with it?

Upgrading Software Written In VB To Include More Graphics/controls/indicator For User Interface?

Feb 18, 2011

I have been given a project to update software written in Visual Basic. The software and some files are enclosed in a folder and was written 3 years ago. I have no clue what to do. All I have been asked to include more controls. The user interface allows user to select three processes by clicking on the buttons on user interface. The new requirements is to add two more buttons. There is not much information so I have to use only the resources available. When I tried to open the project, visual studio prompted to convert the project so its compatible with current version. I could open the project but dont know what to do from there. Please guide me towards the right direction. If the project folder is required please advise me how to attach it too.

Here's the pseudocode of what I want to do:

Setting A 'default' Value To Controls (textbox) (loop Controls)?

Nov 11, 2009

I have aspx form with several textboxes. They are populated with values from a table via retrieval of a dataview. If the row count for the dataview is 0, then I'd like to reset the values in all textboxes. How can I loop through all the textboxes and set a default value?I've tried the following, but no sucess.

For Each ctrl As Control In Page.Form.Controls
If TypeOf ctrl Is WebControls.TextBox Then
CType(ctrl, WebControls.TextBox).Text = ""
End If
Next

My first For Loop was using Page.Controls but it returned only 1 count. The textboxes are inside a tabpanel (ajax), so do I have to locate the tabpage and then find all it's controls (for each tabpage)?

Asp.net - Some User Controls Not Loading When The 'Back' Button Is Pressed?

Dec 14, 2011

I'm working with ASP.NET and VB.NET. I have a page which contains 5 user controls. the page itself does nothing, it just presents the user controls to the user.

The user controls work fine when I come on the page, or when I refresh, but when I go to another page, and press 'Back' only two of my user controls shows up, and they don't work like they're supposed to!

Short description of the controls:

2 controls which look if the user has to create something and shows an option to do so. (goes to the DB)
2 controls show an overview if needed (goes to the DB)1 control looks if the user is an admin (does not go to the DB, but looks in the securityContext)

VS 2005 Way To Handle Similar Controls On Different Tabs?

May 19, 2011

I have a form with a TabControl on it. On the first tab I have a DataGridView and I have a series of controls to represent six separate filters that can be applied to the data in the DataGridView. Each of these filters consists of 1. a ComboBox to display the columns in the DGV so the user can select one to filter on2. a ComboBox to contain the different filter conditions ("Equal to", "Greater Than", etc...)3. a TextBox to allow the user to enter the string to filter againstSo that's what's on the first tab. Tabs 2,3, and 4 are visually identical to tab 1 although they will hold different data and have different capabilities.

C# - Get ALL Child Controls Of A WinForm Of A Specific Type (Button/Textbox)?

I need to get all controls on a form that are of type x, I'm pretty sure I saw that code once in the past that used something like this:

dim ctrls() as Control
ctrls = Me.Controls(GetType(TextBox))

I know I can iterate over all controls getting children using a recursive function, but wondering if there is something more easier or straightforward, maybe:

Dim Ctrls = From ctrl In Me.Controls Where ctrl.GetType Is Textbox

VS 2008 Best Way To Display Large Text Files/Slow Controls?

Mar 24, 2009

I am new to VB.Net, but I can tell you so far I love programming. That said, I'm building a tool basically to parse and display simple plain text log files. I'm hitting one stumbling block that really has me frustrated.

Other tools are able to load huge log files (500MB even) in a number of seconds. My tool, basically hangs loading a file that is maybe 5MB.

I'm using the MyString = StreamReader.ReadToEnd to read the contents into a string, and then RichTextBox1.Text = MyString to display the contents. That said, I really want to display the contents in a datagrid, but there has to be a better way of doing this?

How can I get my application to load larger files and display them faster? What am I doing wrong?

Interface And Graphics :: Controls In Usercontrols Losing Properties?

Feb 5, 2010

The project I'm working on (the same one I'm always asking about) has tabs as the main navigation. I've made some User Controls to sit above the tabs in an attempt to reduce the number of overall controls that are being used (to great success). Now, however, there's one control that overlaps some controls on a tab that are obscured by my newest UControl and I want to make the background transparent.I've seen that AtmaWeapon keeps pointing people to this page detailing how to make the background transparent. That's great and it worked for me. All I did was create the

Code:Protected Overrides ReadOnly Property CreateParams() AsSystem.Windows.Forms.CreateParamsand it worked the way I wanted. Yay. I did write the rest of it too as well as part from a post I saw on the msdn forums, but they weren't needed to get the effect I wanted. However, I've got a number of PictureBoxes on this UControl that should have a BorderStyle of "Fixed3D". However, when this UControl is repainted the borderstyle doesn't reflect this (Note to self: don't .Refresh() a control inside its own .Paint() event ). This doesn't happen the FIRST time they become visible, but only when they've shown up and are made to redraw (like toggling visibility). If the border changes programmatically they look fine
