Share Context Menu For Multiple Controls?

Dec 2, 2010

This is a conceptual question, so I'm not inluding code yet. I can't understand how to share a context menu strip between controls - how do I know which control the user was in when he right clicked it and made a selection?

Example: I have 3 text boxes that all use the same contextmenustrip and require the exact same functionality so no need to load new options. The user selects one of the options and an event fires something like this:

Private Sub mnuX_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles mnuX.Click

how to determine which text box is responsible for it??

Manage A Large Number Of Similar Controls In A User Interface (such As Button Or TextBox Controls)

Aug 23, 2011

There is newer code in a follow up post. I suggest using the code in the later post rather than the code in this one. You can still read this post though. When designing a user interface, one should be conscious of how many individual controls are required to implement the functionality. In some cases an initial design may begin with many buttons or textboxes (for example) but then further review of
the actual required functionality allows for a reduction in the number of unique controls.

But other times, there isn't a better way (which will still make sense to the user of the application) then to have a series of many repeated controls. So in the cases where one can be certain that the best UI implementation for an application will require the use of multiple copies of a given control, then it often becomes necessary to maintain some method of managing all of those controls at various points
throughout the application. Doing so typically requires that one build up some collection of controls which can then be accessed by index in order to work with any given control; but this can lead to a lot of clutter in the code file which handles these control's events. For instance there will be some kind of collection declaration, some recursive routine to find all of the controls of interest, and then any number of event handler methods with long lists of Handles clauses, or additional code loops to wire up the event handling for each control.

Purpose Since most of this functionality could be considered a requirement regardless of the type of control being managed, or its required functionality, it may make sense to wrap all of the control management functionality into a single class. And since our first requirement is a collection of controls, then a base collection class could be the perfect starting point for our control manager. There are a number of existing thread around this topic, with some recent (at the time of this writing) ones being:[URL]..In this, and related, threads I have posted examples of a simple TextBoxManager and ButtonManager control. But again, with so much similar functionality required regardless of the control being managed, it would be technically possible to create a generic ControlManager(Of T As Control) class which can manage any type of control.

[Code]...

So in summary, one can facilitate managing a large number of user interface controls by building a "control manager" class which both encapsulates the list of control instances, and deals with adding and removing defined event handlers for every control it manages. The generic control manager class itself can be inherited and extended into a more specific class on a per-application basis in order to provide more application-specific functionality. VS 2005 Way To Handle Similar Controls On Different Tabs?

May 19, 2011

I have a form with a TabControl on it. On the first tab I have a DataGridView and I have a series of controls to represent six separate filters that can be applied to the data in the DataGridView. Each of these filters consists of 1. a ComboBox to display the columns in the DGV so the user can select one to filter on2. a ComboBox to contain the different filter conditions ("Equal to", "Greater Than", etc...)3. a TextBox to allow the user to enter the string to filter againstSo that's what's on the first tab. Tabs 2,3, and 4 are visually identical to tab 1 although they will hold different data and have different capabilities.

Can Share Data And Methods With Multiple Threads

Jun 15, 2010

I've used mutiple threads in a VB.NET program but I don't know if I did it right.I would like to start about 3 threads. Can they all use the same methods? Will a separate instance of each method automatically be created for each thread? If not, how do you make sure that the data within the method that is used by one thread is not used by another thread?I would like some data to be shared by all threads. How is data shared among threads? What is the protocol for changing the data and checking for changed data?Is there a good tutorial / website that explains how to handle methods and data when using multiple threads?

Public Structure Struct_INTERNET_PROXY_INFO
Public dwAccessType As Integer
Public proxy As IntPtr

Note: getRandomProxy gets a random proxy from a list.Problem is that whenever RefreshIESettings(getRandomProxy()) is applied, the proxy will be applied to all of the WebBrowsers, while i would need to have a unique proxy for each WebBrowser. Not having this would just error out the page in the other browsers and so on.

Reusing Code (functions, Subroutines, Etc.) In Multiple Pages

Dec 28, 2010

I am very familiar with modules from my time with VB and my other programming, but what is the most commonly used practice and the best way to go about this for a website application with ASP.NET? Say I have multiple pages (in multiple directories; some in the root directory, some in child directories from the root) that will call the same set of functions and subroutines, how do I go about putting this reusable code in a place where the pages and their respective classes can call the functions/subroutines?

Or for all those that Microsoft have chosen to document online at least.

Use Same Controls Across Multiple Tab Pages?

Nov 21, 2011

My application has a TabControl which has 5 tab pages. Each page represents a "department" and each department has to run this software. So when the user opens the application, they navigate to their department's page.

The software runs a serious of automated and manual tests. The tests are customized for each department. But I need to update the UI during each section of the test.

On the main tab, there is one panel that has 17 PictureBoxes. Each PictureBox represents one test. The PictureBox can either represent a test in progress, a test passed, or a test failed.

All of the tests are in their own code files, for the most part. And in the main form is when I call the tests and update the UI from a single method.

The issue I'm having is how to update the PictureBoxes without creating a bunch of redundant code.

When the test runs, I update the first PictureBox with "in progress", then when it completes, it's update again with pass or fail. So for a single test, I could need to place the UI update in several places, within the same code block, for planning out all the possible conditions.[code]...
