Slow Form Load (has Large Number Of Controls)

Nov 9, 2010

I wrote last week about a problem with an MDI program that had a large number of forms (each with a large number of controls on it) that was "sluggish" in loading and in switching between the child forms.I've attached an example program in VS2008 (though the actual app is VB2010)Rather than show the hardware control application with all of the text fields, and picture boxes acting as indicators, I made a simple program to show the point. This is exaggerated as this just loads 2000 or so text boxes on a form. In the real app I have ~ 200 assorted controls per form of picture boxes, scroll bars, text boxes, labels etc. Also, there is a large full screen .jpeg as the back ground of each form. All are generated at run time and are placed on the form in the New call of each form. (as in the sample attached)main issue seems to be the methodology I use to switch between child forms. I make the current form .visible = false, and the next.visible = true. I have used this as it "keeps the place" on each page if the user has scrolled or is looking at one section of the form. When the next form .visible = true happens I see the controls added in a "machine gun" fashion instead of all at once.

VS 2008 Best Way To Display Large Text Files/Slow Controls?

Mar 24, 2009

I am new to VB.Net, but I can tell you so far I love programming. That said, I'm building a tool basically to parse and display simple plain text log files. I'm hitting one stumbling block that really has me frustrated.

Other tools are able to load huge log files (500MB even) in a number of seconds. My tool, basically hangs loading a file that is maybe 5MB.

I'm using the MyString = StreamReader.ReadToEnd to read the contents into a string, and then RichTextBox1.Text = MyString to display the contents. That said, I really want to display the contents in a datagrid, but there has to be a better way of doing this?

How can I get my application to load larger files and display them faster? What am I doing wrong?

Manage A Large Number Of Similar Controls In A User Interface (such As Button Or TextBox Controls)

Aug 23, 2011

There is newer code in a follow up post. I suggest using the code in the later post rather than the code in this one. You can still read this post though. When designing a user interface, one should be conscious of how many individual controls are required to implement the functionality. In some cases an initial design may begin with many buttons or textboxes (for example) but then further review of
the actual required functionality allows for a reduction in the number of unique controls.

But other times, there isn't a better way (which will still make sense to the user of the application) then to have a series of many repeated controls. So in the cases where one can be certain that the best UI implementation for an application will require the use of multiple copies of a given control, then it often becomes necessary to maintain some method of managing all of those controls at various points
throughout the application. Doing so typically requires that one build up some collection of controls which can then be accessed by index in order to work with any given control; but this can lead to a lot of clutter in the code file which handles these control's events. For instance there will be some kind of collection declaration, some recursive routine to find all of the controls of interest, and then any number of event handler methods with long lists of Handles clauses, or additional code loops to wire up the event handling for each control.

Purpose Since most of this functionality could be considered a requirement regardless of the type of control being managed, or its required functionality, it may make sense to wrap all of the control management functionality into a single class. And since our first requirement is a collection of controls, then a base collection class could be the perfect starting point for our control manager. There are a number of existing thread around this topic, with some recent (at the time of this writing) ones being:[URL]..In this, and related, threads I have posted examples of a simple TextBoxManager and ButtonManager control. But again, with so much similar functionality required regardless of the control being managed, it would be technically possible to create a generic ControlManager(Of T As Control) class which can manage any type of control.

[Code]...

So in summary, one can facilitate managing a large number of user interface controls by building a "control manager" class which both encapsulates the list of control instances, and deals with adding and removing defined event handlers for every control it manages. The generic control manager class itself can be inherited and extended into a more specific class on a per-application basis in order to provide more application-specific functionality. Disable/Change Visibility Of Large Number Of Text Boxes Quickly And Efficiently On Form

Aug 6, 2009

I have a form which contains a large number of textboxes covering numerous panels/tab controls and I would like to have the user only have one text box visible at a given time and when the user clicks on the screen to another label with a corresponding text box I would like that to appear and the other currently open to disappear. Currently I have the following loop that goes through and changes the visibility of the appropriate controls unless it is the name of the control I am looking for:

'This is used to iterate through all the controls in the form and ensure the visibility of all other controls
' than the active control is set to false.

Control Recommendations - Controls At The Top Of It And A Large DataGridView Is Docked Below All The Controls

Nov 10, 2011

I have a maximized form that has controls at the top of it and a large DataGridView that is docked below all the controls. Its kind of like the Ribbon in MS Office. The controls cover about 1/4 of the screen at the top. I would like a way for the user to click a button to hide all the controls then automatically expand into the place the controls were so the user can view more data in the DataGridView and visa versa. For example, in MS Office Excel you can hide the ribbon by clicking a tiny button that has "^" on it.

I'm not very familiar with all the controls in Visual Studio so I would like to hear some recommendations. Is this situation ideal for a SplitContainer or ToolStripContainer or am I way off base here?

Load Form Triggers Events In Its Controls

Oct 16, 2011

I found this mystifying in VB6 and it's still here...

For example - I have a combobox on a form and I have put some code in its SelectedIndexChanged event. The problem is that I want this code to be executed *only* when the user clicks on an item in the combobox dropdown. Why is it then that it gets executed when the form first loads? And how do I stop this happening?

I used to use a "FormLoading" boolean to decide whether or not the code was executed but this surely shouldn't be necessary. Is there a better way?

Load Method Of A Datatable Sometimes So Slow

Jun 27, 2011

The project is a web app in ASP/VB.net. The issue is that some pages are mind-boggingly slow. After trying to track down the bottleneck, it was discovered to be the load method when filling a datatable with query results.

We are using an Oracle database and queries are executed in stored procedures. As an example, we have a relatively simple select statement within a procedure which returns 2 columns with 6 rows which was determined to take about 0.015 seconds to execute. However it takes on average 7 seconds to load the OracleDataReader into a datatable - a ridiculous amount of time for such a small record set. After messing around with the query, I found that a simple decode statement appeared to be causing the issue. The decode statement is used similar to as follows[code]...

The iBln variable is simply a number being passed in to act as a boolean variable for determining which column should be between two dates. If I comment this decode statement out and make it simply "column1 BETWEEN iDate1 and iDate2" then the load method takes no time at all as it should, signifying that it is indeed the decode statement causing issues.

Slow IDE - Faster Way Of Naming Controls?

Sep 21, 2010

I have experienced this in both VB 2005 and 2008. First, design a form by placing your UI elements where you want them. Then, go back and start naming your controls the way you want them (i.e. "txtWhatever" instead of the default "TextBox1", etc.).I find that after you change the name of a control, there is a slight but annoying delay as VS IDE digests the fact that you changed the name, thus slowing down my workflow. I recall that this process was much more rapid-fire in the VB6 days - i.e. name one control, click the next one and start typing, boom-boom-boom.

Has this annoyed anyone else, and if so, have you found any kind of remedy to speed things up in this regard?

Load Large CSV File Into Database?

Oct 14, 2009

I'm trying to load a large CSV file into a Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 database. I've tried using the following: Using MyReader As New Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileIO.TextFieldParser("filename.txt") MyReader.TextFieldType = FileIO.FieldType.Delimited MyReader.SetDelimiters(",")Then splitting the data with MyReader.ReadFields() etc, before using this data to add rows to a dataset in a database table in my project. However, my CSV files are very large, at above 9.5 million rows, and this takes forever, if the computer doesn't crash also. Does anyone have a better idea for what to do? I would like the CSV file to be loaded into the database table, to enable me to sort it, and undertake some querys and maths.
