C# - Get ALL Child Controls Of A WinForm Of A Specific Type (Button/Textbox)?
Aug 5, 2010
I need to get all controls on a form that are of type x, I'm pretty sure I saw that code once in the past that used something like this:
dim ctrls() as Control
ctrls = Me.Controls(GetType(TextBox))
I know I can iterate over all controls getting children using a recursive function, but wondering if there is something more easier or straightforward, maybe:
Dim Ctrls = From ctrl In Me.Controls Where ctrl.GetType Is Textbox
UI is created in VS 2008. I'm using C# .... I need to let the user move/focus between text fields from top to bottom by clicking tab button. How can i do it?
There is newer code in a follow up post. I suggest using the code in the later post rather than the code in this one. You can still read this post though. When designing a user interface, one should be conscious of how many individual controls are required to implement the functionality. In some cases an initial design may begin with many buttons or textboxes (for example) but then further review of the actual required functionality allows for a reduction in the number of unique controls.
But other times, there isn't a better way (which will still make sense to the user of the application) then to have a series of many repeated controls. So in the cases where one can be certain that the best UI implementation for an application will require the use of multiple copies of a given control, then it often becomes necessary to maintain some method of managing all of those controls at various points throughout the application. Doing so typically requires that one build up some collection of controls which can then be accessed by index in order to work with any given control; but this can lead to a lot of clutter in the code file which handles these control's events. For instance there will be some kind of collection declaration, some recursive routine to find all of the controls of interest, and then any number of event handler methods with long lists of Handles clauses, or additional code loops to wire up the event handling for each control.
Purpose Since most of this functionality could be considered a requirement regardless of the type of control being managed, or its required functionality, it may make sense to wrap all of the control management functionality into a single class. And since our first requirement is a collection of controls, then a base collection class could be the perfect starting point for our control manager. There are a number of existing thread around this topic, with some recent (at the time of this writing) ones being:[URL]..In this, and related, threads I have posted examples of a simple TextBoxManager and ButtonManager control. But again, with so much similar functionality required regardless of the control being managed, it would be technically possible to create a generic ControlManager(Of T As Control) class which can manage any type of control.
[Code]...
So in summary, one can facilitate managing a large number of user interface controls by building a "control manager" class which both encapsulates the list of control instances, and deals with adding and removing defined event handlers for every control it manages. The generic control manager class itself can be inherited and extended into a more specific class on a per-application basis in order to provide more application-specific functionality. My friend and I are taking a visual basic online class. We are total beginners and are having trouble with a programming assignment. We have to create a arithmetic calculator with an enter button multiplication button and an addition button. What we can't seem to code properly is the event handler that allows us to use the enter button when we type in an integer in the textbox. This assignment is detrimental to our grade!
CompatibleTextRendering support for winform controls. label, check box etc have a property UseCompatibleTextRendering when this property set to true your app support East Asian languuages without having installing there languages on windows. But there is no UseCompatibleTextRendering for textbox, listbox, contextmenustrip etc i can Inherits ContextMenuStrip for this support using this code.
Public Class MyMenu Inherits ContextMenuStrip Public Sub New() Renderer = New MyRenderer()
[code]...
if we can add this support to other controls like listbox combobox etc.
I'm from denmark and hope I can explain my question for you. This is just a example: I have a panel, let's say panel1 and another panel on that panel (panel2) and so on until for example panel5 - on panel5 I have a button (button1). Now I would like to change button1's backcolor property through code how do I then get access to button1, now it's a child-control on panel5 that is a child control on panel4 etc. ??
I have a slight problem With an enumaration of child controls on a form. The following code will not get but about have the controls that are on the form. The controls show that the count is correct but when it goes through the loop it skips over some of the controls. If you run it through the enumeration two or three times it will get all the controls a few at a time. The solution uses two forms, one that has the controls and the other that labels are made and displayed on. The Tx is just a index to add a number to the label.name and rename the label. So each label is identified seperately. This works for all the the controls that are seen in the for each loop.
In main thread I create panel(s) (based on some configuration), and then in the next step based on the file type (like video, ppt, image...) I create appropriate controls (dynamically) to show on the forms.
The creation of the control will be done in separate threads (for each file). After creating the control, it throws an error when I try to add that control to the panel (which was created in the main thread), something like cross thread violation, control was accessed from one thread other that it was created.
Can some one please help me in this regard? In this scenario, everything - creating the panels and controls - will be dynamic. Nothing will be static.I tried some of the articles found here on StackOverflow (like, control.BeginInvoke() .. etc), but wasn't able to solve my problem.
I've created a news ticker control, which reads from RSS feeds and scrolls the text Horizontally. The plan is to have 3 of these on my Windows form, which will each display their own information.
The control is created as a label, which is populated with the text, and then scrolls right to left using a timer, once the label gets to the end of the text, and disappears of the left side, the rss is re-read, and then the cycle resumes. The problem is that with multiple copies of this controls on my form, once one gets to the end of it's run, all three freeze while the rss is reread, rather than just the control that needs to do it.
Is there a way to run each of these controls independently (threading?)? Or is there a glitch in my code causing this? (below - some elements not included, but it should be fairly obvious what is happening!)
I have a form with a datarepeater that contains various controls (i.e. datetimepickers, text boxes, combobox) that are populated via a binding source. I also have other controls on the form that are not part of the data repeater. I would like to force validating all controls after the data is populated. I have successfully forced validating the non-datarepeater controls using Me.ValidateChildren() at the end of my load event. However, it does not fire the validating events for the controls within the data repeater. I have unsuccessfully tried many different attempts to set and move focus within the datarepeater controls trying to get the validating events kicked off. I am not sure where would be the best place (e.g. in drawItem? in ItemCloned?) to place the code and what it should be exactly.
Here was my latest attempt: Private Sub DataRepeater1_DrawItem(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As Microsoft.VisualBasic.PowerPacks.DataRepeaterItemEventArgs) _ Handles DataRepeater1.DrawItem For i = 0 To e.DataRepeaterItem.Controls.Count - 1 e.DataRepeaterItem.Controls.Item(i).Focus() e.DataRepeaterItem.Controls.Item(0).Focus() Next
I successfully handled the validating events in the data repeater caused by user input errors. However, I have the unusual situation that the data coming into my form is already bad for some of the controls. The purpose of the form is to validate the data coming in to it and from user-input. I am newbie with vb.net.
I drew a Group Box around a bunch of controls cause I wanted to the Box, meanwhile all the controls are glued to the Group Box. How can I remove the Group Box without removing the Controls?
I have a winform with a main panel that is anchored top, left; dock: fill, and set to a specific size to contain another panel of content that we want to scroll through. The other panel along with a few other controls are on the main panel. Now, for some reason, after running the application the controls will be shifted down (never horizontally) some random amount. Now, the "random amount" may in fact be the last position of the scroll bar or something, but either way, it is unintended functionality. I have resorted to automatically resetting the locations of these controls on the main form in the constructor?
Strange story... I downloaded VMWare but it has since advised of an available update. I downloaded the update and when I click to install it, a window comes up with VB Code from a project I created a while back in a completely separate folder from this install file. I then tried downloading the trial of VMWare Workstation and when running the installer it shows the same thing. I don't know of anyway to contact VMWare support since I don't pay for any services or products and all there is available is a FAQ type section. Of course this problem would not be in there, nor can I find any such related issue online. his is VMWare specific or perhaps the type of install specific. I have no other issues with any other app installations other than with VMWare installations.
I have a panel with some controls in it (several textboxes, a slider, 2 buttons, and a small groupbox).. When I click a button, I want all of the textboxes within the panel to be readonly... So I have this code: [code] When I run it though, I get the following error:Unable to cast object of type 'System.Windows.Forms.Button' to type 'System.Windows.Forms.TextBox'.If I remove a button, it moves on to give me the same error but for a label..
I am presently working with winforms and I would like to add facebook like button to my winforms.So at present I have downloaded facebook developer toolkit and after that I am trying to add the like button.So I would like to know how to proceed further to achieve in adding the like button.
I want to select a button("Exit") on the ToolStrip after pressing a button ("ButtonFocus To Exit") outside the toolstrip. I used ExitToolStripButton.Select() on ButtonFocusToExit.Click but which seems like its selecting the button ("Exit") but when i pressed enter it never execute the code in "ExitToolStripButton_Click" .
So the button is still not active. Can anyone have fix to it?
I have a WinForms group box that needs to be sized programmatically. Everything else is working well but I am having trouble with the below line of code because as the form is re-sized larger the group box grows over the buttons that are underneath. I am looking for a way in code so that the group box grows with the form, but no so large that it grows over the button underneath it.
I don't find a CanGrow property on the Textbox control. This is common in some other controls, and what it does is expand the control to acomodate more data. Anyway to get this feature in the TextBox?
I've got a basic VB.net 2.0 application together in VisualStudio 2005. Within a form, I've tied [enter] in several text boxes to a button. What I'd like to do is "press" the button from getField_KeyDown() to give the user a visual indication of what's happening.With the code below, the button click work is done but the button's look doesn't change and the user is left without feedback.
Private Sub getField_KeyDown(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.KeyEventArgs) Handles txtGetKey.KeyDown If e.KeyCode = Keys.Enter Then e.Handled = True Call btnGet.PerformClick() End If End Sub
How can I make the button looked pressed while the btnGet.PerformClick() work is being done?
My application creates MDI Children programatically. I have a frmBrowser as an MDI Child which I create multiple instances of. There are several other MDI children in the MDIParent. How do I only cycle through the frmBrowser MDI children?
For Each Child As frmBrowser In frmMain.MdiChildren 'perform action on child Next Child
The code above gives an error for all the Child that aren't of the type frmBrowser.
Within my program, I have identified a process via System.Diagnostics.Processand.GetProcesses. Now I need to close one and only one of its windows whose window title i know. How do I do that?
When I enter values in the textboxes and then press a button (=leave the edit) I find that table (myDataSet.Table(0)) contains all the values I entered besides for the last control/textbox that I was in.
I was once using a program that was under beta, so the creator added a nifty feature. You could enter any vb.net code into a textbox, and when you pressed the button next to it, that code was executed. For example, you could type MsgBox("hello") into the textbox, click the button, and it would run that code as if you actually put it in the source code and ran it. I've googled so many different phrases trying to find out how to do this, but I can't find anything. Anyone have any ideas or resources I can look at?
opening a program and type something in their textbox or click on button of program if you can tell me refrence or .net platform class that can i access to another filed program
I am using VB.net to create a simple winform. I have the option to save the data I input on that form. I am trying to prevent the user not to save the data if textbox10 is empty. I tried the 'while' loop but I go into an infinite loop. The code is below. The 'if' statement gives the error but allows the user to save.
While Len(Me.techniciansTextBox.Text) = 0 MessageBox.Show("Please Enter a Technician To continue") End While
