CompatibleTextRendering support for winform controls. label, check box etc have a property UseCompatibleTextRendering when this property set to true your app support East Asian languuages without having installing there languages on windows. But there is no UseCompatibleTextRendering for textbox, listbox, contextmenustrip etc i can Inherits ContextMenuStrip for this support using this code.

I am trying to find a way to use the UseCompatibleTextRendering properties on each control on my form. However, it does not seem to be an option when i use the following code below:
For Each ocontrol As Control In Form1.Controls
ocontrol.UseCompatibleTextRendering = True
Next
ocontrol does not seem to have that option but has all other options for the button. If i do Buttion1.UseCompatibleTextRendering = True then it works just fine.

In main thread I create panel(s) (based on some configuration), and then in the next step based on the file type (like video, ppt, image...) I create appropriate controls (dynamically) to show on the forms.
The creation of the control will be done in separate threads (for each file). After creating the control, it throws an error when I try to add that control to the panel (which was created in the main thread), something like cross thread violation, control was accessed from one thread other that it was created.
Can some one please help me in this regard? In this scenario, everything - creating the panels and controls - will be dynamic. Nothing will be static.I tried some of the articles found here on StackOverflow (like, control.BeginInvoke() .. etc), but wasn't able to solve my problem.

I've created a news ticker control, which reads from RSS feeds and scrolls the text Horizontally. The plan is to have 3 of these on my Windows form, which will each display their own information.
The control is created as a label, which is populated with the text, and then scrolls right to left using a timer, once the label gets to the end of the text, and disappears of the left side, the rss is re-read, and then the cycle resumes. The problem is that with multiple copies of this controls on my form, once one gets to the end of it's run, all three freeze while the rss is reread, rather than just the control that needs to do it.
Is there a way to run each of these controls independently (threading?)? Or is there a glitch in my code causing this? (below - some elements not included, but it should be fairly obvious what is happening!)

I have a form with a datarepeater that contains various controls (i.e. datetimepickers, text boxes, combobox) that are populated via a binding source. I also have other controls on the form that are not part of the data repeater. I would like to force validating all controls after the data is populated. I have successfully forced validating the non-datarepeater controls using Me.ValidateChildren() at the end of my load event. However, it does not fire the validating events for the controls within the data repeater. I have unsuccessfully tried many different attempts to set and move focus within the datarepeater controls trying to get the validating events kicked off. I am not sure where would be the best place (e.g. in drawItem? in ItemCloned?) to place the code and what it should be exactly.
Here was my latest attempt:
Private Sub DataRepeater1_DrawItem(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As Microsoft.VisualBasic.PowerPacks.DataRepeaterItemEventArgs) _
Handles DataRepeater1.DrawItem
For i = 0 To e.DataRepeaterItem.Controls.Count - 1
e.DataRepeaterItem.Controls.Item(i).Focus()
e.DataRepeaterItem.Controls.Item(0).Focus()
Next
I successfully handled the validating events in the data repeater caused by user input errors. However, I have the unusual situation that the data coming into my form is already bad for some of the controls. The purpose of the form is to validate the data coming in to it and from user-input. I am newbie with vb.net.

I need to get all controls on a form that are of type x, I'm pretty sure I saw that code once in the past that used something like this:
dim ctrls() as Control
ctrls = Me.Controls(GetType(TextBox))
I know I can iterate over all controls getting children using a recursive function, but wondering if there is something more easier or straightforward, maybe:
Dim Ctrls = From ctrl In Me.Controls Where ctrl.GetType Is Textbox

I have a winform with a main panel that is anchored top, left; dock: fill, and set to a specific size to contain another panel of content that we want to scroll through. The other panel along with a few other controls are on the main panel. Now, for some reason, after running the application the controls will be shifted down (never horizontally) some random amount. Now, the "random amount" may in fact be the last position of the scroll bar or something, but either way, it is unintended functionality. I have resorted to automatically resetting the locations of these controls on the main form in the constructor?

There is newer code in a follow up post. I suggest using the code in the later post rather than the code in this one. You can still read this post though. When designing a user interface, one should be conscious of how many individual controls are required to implement the functionality. In some cases an initial design may begin with many buttons or textboxes (for example) but then further review of
the actual required functionality allows for a reduction in the number of unique controls.
But other times, there isn't a better way (which will still make sense to the user of the application) then to have a series of many repeated controls. So in the cases where one can be certain that the best UI implementation for an application will require the use of multiple copies of a given control, then it often becomes necessary to maintain some method of managing all of those controls at various points
throughout the application. Doing so typically requires that one build up some collection of controls which can then be accessed by index in order to work with any given control; but this can lead to a lot of clutter in the code file which handles these control's events. For instance there will be some kind of collection declaration, some recursive routine to find all of the controls of interest, and then any number of event handler methods with long lists of Handles clauses, or additional code loops to wire up the event handling for each control.
Purpose Since most of this functionality could be considered a requirement regardless of the type of control being managed, or its required functionality, it may make sense to wrap all of the control management functionality into a single class. And since our first requirement is a collection of controls, then a base collection class could be the perfect starting point for our control manager. There are a number of existing thread around this topic, with some recent (at the time of this writing) ones being:[URL]..In this, and related, threads I have posted examples of a simple TextBoxManager and ButtonManager control. But again, with so much similar functionality required regardless of the control being managed, it would be technically possible to create a generic ControlManager(Of T As Control) class which can manage any type of control.
[Code]...
So in summary, one can facilitate managing a large number of user interface controls by building a "control manager" class which both encapsulates the list of control instances, and deals with adding and removing defined event handlers for every control it manages. The generic control manager class itself can be inherited and extended into a more specific class on a per-application basis in order to provide more application-specific functionality. I have a maximized form that has controls at the top of it and a large DataGridView that is docked below all the controls. Its kind of like the Ribbon in MS Office. The controls cover about 1/4 of the screen at the top. I would like a way for the user to click a button to hide all the controls then automatically expand into the place the controls were so the user can view more data in the DataGridView and visa versa. For example, in MS Office Excel you can hide the ribbon by clicking a tiny button that has "^" on it.
I'm not very familiar with all the controls in Visual Studio so I would like to hear some recommendations. Is this situation ideal for a SplitContainer or ToolStripContainer or am I way off base here?

I've got a couple of these NumericUpDown controls I put on a form. Without describing too much about the form I basically want to update some variables each time one of these NumUD controls changes value. So for each NumUD I have a call to a Recalculate subroutine within their "changedValue" event.
There are actually two problems. First, if I initialize the "Value" property to something other than zero in VB2010 at DESIGN TIME it won't even open the form when I hit RUN. It gives me a "No Source Available. No symbols loaded for any call stack frame" error. The error box says "InvalidOperationException" was not handled. So if I try to set the initial value of the Value property to anything but zero of either I get this error.

I have a winforms app with multiple GUI threads. I want them to be able to access each other's thread objects without having to keep track of that information separately.Is there a function in .NET that I can feed a winforms control or window object, and get back the thread? Or a function in the API I can pinvoke for the threadID?
Edit For those of you who for some reason believed my italicized text, congratualations, you're hired!! Here is the problem: "App is crashing in the wild by locking up totally, that is, it stop responding. Very intermittent, and trying to debug it, it seems to never happen."
So what do do? Install an option in the program that the user can activate under our direction, whereby from another GUI thread in the same app, do a thread.abort on the main GUI thread, then we can look at the call stack in the error log. Viola, found an impossible to debug error in less than a day. (Stop now, it had nothing to do with abusing multithreading:-)
I'll admit I almost didn't ask this, the reason I did was I could see an object reference to the main form, but there wasn't any for its thread. I'm giving Chris Shain the answer a/c it is a quick way, unfortunately when the thread is hanging, I wouldn't be able to do an invoke (it would hang too). A little more digging revealed the GetWindowThreadProcessId API call. But it's an unmanaged thread ID, apparently there are complications turning that into a managed thread ID.
So I bit the bullet and put in a global reference to the main UI thread. Would have posted it to begin with, but hadn't written it yet.In main public module/static class:
Public GUIThread As Threading.Thread
Sub Main()

ok so i dynamically create a wsf for running an automated telnet session that works great!!(finally!!) but auto executing the script from my code is proving difficult for whatever reason.
I have tried:
Shell("C:shutoffscript.wsf") this produces this result.
also tried setting a bat file that launches the script and launching it as well using shell every time I launch it I get an error in the script that works just fine executed outside my code.
using outfile As New StreamWriter("c:" & "shutoffscript.wsf")
outfile.Write(sb.ToString())
End Using
MsgBox("Script built press ok to execute")
Shell("C:shutoffscript.wsf")
I think this has to be some sort of permissions error right? Since both errors tend to not be able to find the file. Just not sure how to fix it.

I have a query about dynamically added controls to a form. I have a series of buttons which are created and added at run time. I have a two drop down lists and two buttons which are created at design time. Button 1 creates a series of buttons called "Test 1.x" based upon the selection of the two drop down lists. This works fine and am happy with the logic.However.... Button two should remove all the dynamically created buttons from the form.This does not happen. What does happen is that 50% of the buttons are removed starting with the first one. WHen checking the loop it only enters the loop half the amount of times that there are buttons. Very strange. When the loop is run repeatability it will remove all controls. Why will my logic not remove all the dynamically created controls at once? What is wrong with my logic?
I attach two code snippets and the .net file for your consideration.Button method which creates the dynamically created buttons from the two drop down lists and adds to form

I have aspx form with several textboxes.They are populated with values from a table via retrieval of a dataview.If the row count for the dataview is 0, then I'd like to reset the values in all textboxes. How can I loop through all the textboxes and set a default value?I've tried the following, but no sucess.
For Each ctrl As Control In Page.Form.Controls
If TypeOf ctrl Is WebControls.TextBox Then
CType(ctrl, WebControls.TextBox).Text = ""
End If
Next
My first For Loop was using Page.Controls but it returned only 1 count.The textboxes are inside a tabpanel (ajax), so do I have to locate the tabpage and then find all it's controls (for each tabpage)?
