Keep Each Module Separate And Call EXE's Or Should Create One Large Project?
Dec 15, 2009
The company I work for has a VB6 project that is using an ACCESS database. The project consists of seperate modules such as Accounts Payable, Payroll, General Ledger, and Inventory. At the current time each module is a seperate project in VB6 and the EXE files are called when needed. In total there are about 1300 forms in the project. We are moving from ACCESS to Sql Server and from VB6 to VB2008.The question that I (we) have is as follows; Should we continue to keep each module seperate and call the EXE's or should we create one large project? What are the pros and cons for each way?Is there something written that explains the advantages of either?
How do I create separate files in a VB Express 2010 project?[code]...
Query 1: When creating class files, the VB Book by Loffelmann & Purohit (p 172) says, put the class in a class file that has the same name as the class. However, as shown, I want to have two or more related classes in this file. Do I need a separate file for each class? That would get cumbersome!
Query 2: Can I create a file similar to MyOutput.vb so that both MyModule and MyClass can include statements like[code]...
For reasons that are beyond my control, I have three Projects. Projects A and B reference project C. Project A references project B so that it can open a large form in project B. I now need to open that large form from project C, but VB won't allow me to add a reference from C to B because that would create a circular dependency. I found a way around it, though. I created a Timer in A, and when I opened C from A, I passed in that timer. When the user performs a certain action, I enable the Timer from A, and this causes C to open B for me.
I have a TabControl object on my form with many tabs created in code (TabPages) and my problem is that the same objects that are in the initial TabPage needs to be in the other TabPages created in code, I have this done in code when the user clicks the 'New Tab' menu option, however the same code is used for any new tabs created. The problem created here is that I have an event against one of the objects that appear in the other TabPages, but because the same code is used to create any new tab pages, the event will only work on the newest tab page, if that makes sense? By the way these objects that appear on the other TabPages are properties at the top so events can be handled against them in the respective subroutine.
I've been searching for the answer for a while but can't find it yet. Basically so far I have a simple VB.Net form with one button.I would like to make a class or module that can handle events from the main form. This is my code so far but it doesn't seem to work.
So, I'm having troubles implementing a separate thread. This is because I have a simple class, and in it I start a new thread. So, as it is not any form, I haven't found any way to make it call the function in the UI Thread.
So, I cannot use the Invoke method. Is there any way to call a function from another thread?
I have a problem regarding calling the function in form to the module..i have 2 module which is User Login Module and the other Module is Update the Fields of Student..my problem is the Update Module when i call the function in form i cant call the function that i used..this my code in udpate module and this is my code in form The UpdateExeQuery that i use in module.when i call in the form its error..
I call the Sub in the module from the form, passing the form into the Sub defined in the module.
Then i add an Handler to an istance of a control (for example mousemove) and i want to give to this handler the execution of the Sub defined in the form.
Example.
Class form1 Sub Form1Sub() ModuleSub(me)
[Code]....
The problem is that i don't know hot to call the Sub defined in the form, in the Sub handler using the istance of the form passed in the Sub paramenter in the module...
I have a Util module in my VB.NET program that has project-wide methods such as logging and property parsing. The general practice where I work seems to be to call these methods directly without prefixing them with Util. When I was new to VB, it took me a while to figure out where these methods/functions were coming from. As I use my own Util methods now, I can't help thinking that it's a lot clearer and more understandable to add Util. before each method call (you know immediately that it's user-defined but not within the current class, and where to find it), and is hardly even longer. What's the general practice when calling procedures/functions of VB modules? Should we prefix them with the module name or not?
I have a main form (frmPos) and through a module (modTransaction) I open and close several other forms. This works flawlessly. However, when the function on the module is finalized, I want to clear the main (open) form. Therefore, I made a public sub (clearForm) on the main form and when I call this from the main form it works.
Im new in this forum. I just recently upgraded my Visual Studio 2003 to Visual Studio 2008.I have a web project which is working very well in Visual Studio 2003. But when Im trying to run the same project in Visual Studio 2008, Im getting a runtime error message. The error message is about a public function which is defined in a public module. When Im trying to call that function from different web pages of my project, the web pages are not recognising the public functions and asking me to
I'm looking to call an excel macro (excel version 07) within a separate visual studio application (visual studio express 2010). Basically, a user clicks a browse dialog button to select a xls or xlsm file which is then added to a listbox. Next, I would like the macro to run when another button is clicked. The macro looks at the first column in excel and moves the listed .tif images from one folder to another. I referenced the excel libraries, but seem to be getting hung up on a few code statements (''''ERROR see code below). I would like to run the macro within visual studio for any selected excel file or add the macro somehow to the selected excel file and run it.
'Here is the button click procedure
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click filenames = lstFiles.SelectedItem
I have some functions written in C that read & write large binary files (> 4 GB) using routines CreateFile, ReadFile, WriteFile & SetFilePointer, that use the HANDLE data type to access the file. Some others who are more familiar with Visual Basic would would like to be able to call my C routines to work with such large binary files. We particularly need SetFilePointer to jump around with the files.
I have a function in a module that returns a datatable.I need to call that function asynchronously and get the results in the Main thread (Main Form) in vb.net.
I have a form set up where I want to run the function PopulateGrid on it's Form_Load event. I have initialized the DB connection as follows:
Private Sub Main_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load LoadConfigFile() cn = New OleDbConnection("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; Data Source=" & config("DatabasePath") & ";") cn.Open() End Sub
Now, I want to run the PopulateGrid function directly after I connect to the database as shown above. I'm confused as to how I'd use a database query in a module when the database is initialized in my main form. Would simple setting the variable cn to public work?
I am try to learn to use Mysql / MySql.Data.MySqlClientI did find sample how to connect to Mysql but I want to have it in Class or Module so I only call open database when I open the form
I have not used a module in a long time. I am get an error when i try to call my sub openDatabaseConnection that is in a module called dataaccess. i amtring to call this method in my ui form code but i get the error as so: The type initializer for 'bsoDetailsDB.dataAccess' threw an exception.
My code:
Public Class Form1 Private Sub btnOpen_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnOpen.Click OpenDatabaseConnction()
I have to calculate y = a + Bx or y = mx + b in non engineering form. Anyways I have to calculate the y intercept first and am having trouble calling the function from a module. Here is the module and the second window will be the code from my main form
I have a vb.net Windows application that calls a vb.net Web Service function. Both the vb.net application and Web Service have been in use for over 5 years and have worked well. The Windows App builds a text file consisting of a number of inserts into an Oracle table, followed by a call to an Oracle package. The Web Service call uploads the text file to the Web Server, loops through the statements in the text files and executes them. It then does a Select statement to put the resultant data in a string which is passed back to the calling program. We have both people on our local area network as well as external users where the call to the Web Server is over the internet.
The data string returned is the pricing for each of the lines inserted in the text file, separated by asterisks. Normal use of this call has anywhere from 1 to a few dozen lines, and the program works fine for this for both internal and external users.
Our problem right now is one external person is attempting to price a job with 491 individual line items. At first it would not price, whether the job was priced from a computer at the customers site or one of our internal people on the LAN. The problem turned out to be the timeout value was not long enough (it was set at 2 minutes, this job takes 5 minutes) so changing both the Timeout value in the Web Service call as well the httpRuntime executionTimeout value in the web.config file on the web server addressed the problem, but only for our internal users on the LAN. Our external customer wants to be able to price jobs of this size going forward, and I am at a loss as to why it errors on internet connected machines but not locally connected machines. Our customer is in New York, We are in Wisconsin, and I am able to recreate the error condition from my home computer.
The other thing is, if I create a VPN connection to our server from my computer at home, this job will price (again, it takes about 5 minutes) but if I disconnect the VPN connection, it gets an error after approximately 3 minutes, http 404: Not Found. The customer can otherwise price all of his other jobs with no problems, it's only this one, very large job that gets the error.
I have coded two seperate VB.net windows forms application as two seperate projects in seperate solutions. I now want to combine one project called "Reporting" into the other project called "AnalysisApp" and be able to call the Reporting apps main form. The Reporting app utilies a whole load of controls from DevExpress which are not included in the "AnalysisApp" I have added references in "AnalysisApp" to the DevEpress controls and also to the Reporting app, as well as combining the Reporting app into the same solution, but when I build the "AnalysisApp" it fails saying that it cannot find the DevExpress DLLs
I'm pretty sure this is something super easy, but how do i access a resource that is in a separate project using the expression syntax?I thought it would be like so:
where SomeNamespace.Resources is the project that the resources are located in.
i normally just do <%= SomeNamespace.Resources.Web.PleaseSelectAnImage%> but i need to have this inside a control. <kw:SlickUpload ID="SlickUpload1" runat="server" ValidExtensions=".png, .gif, .jpg" InvalidExtensionMessage="<%$ Resources:SomeNamespace.Resources.Resources.Web, PleaseSelectAnImage %>" >
so when i just do what i normally do, it puts <%= SomeNamespace.Resources.Web.PleaseSelectAnImage%>" literally.my project name is SomeNamespace.Resources. the resource file name is Web. and the key is PleaseSelectAnImage.
I have a very simple class that crashes the VB.NET IDE when I added this list. Granted this is a list with 10,000 items but it crashes when I added it to the project. When I delete it with a text editor outside the project does not crash. I have not installed SP1 based on the comments not sure if this is a know problem or not. I can post the project its fairly small as its just text.

I'm am wanting to create a setup Project and see that there is an option to create a Merge Module Project. The description is not clear to me. That is, it says 'Create a Windows Installer Merge Module project to which files can be added'
