I am writing an app in VB2010. My code parses a text file, assigns data to variables My??, and then attempts to store this data in an access 2010 (actually access 2007 format) table. Yet, whenever my code gets to MyRow.Item("Artist") = MyArtist I get an error 5 'Artist' does not belong to Table MyTable, but the field/column does exist in the table as do all the others.
01Dim tbl As DataTable = New DataTable(MyTable)
02tbl.Rows.Add()
03Dim lastRow As Integer = tbl.Rows.Count - 1
[Code].....

I have a program where a lot of the required information for it is stored in text files. I simply read this information into large arrays. However, I don't think it's necessary to load all the information each time. Rather, it would be more efficient if I could simply search through a list of items to find the one I need and then use the data from it, or to find a similar name and use it elsewhere.
Would I be right in using a database? And is database programming done in SQL? I have a book on it telling me to use the SQL Server (IIRC), so I shouldn't be doing it in the VB.NET Express GUI?
Here's an example of what I would do:
Hex = 03 00 => dex number 003
Search in file Pokemon Dex Numbers
003 returns Bulbasaur
Check Bulbasaur base stats in the base stats file
etc
So basically I'm reusing a lot of information. I think a database would be best and it would all be internal right? I'm getting complaints about access denied to a text file (since it's stored in the program directory in the program files).
So to cap up the few questions I have:
-Databases are done in SQL and not inside the GUI?
-Databases would load internally?
-I could search a database without having to load it into like an array or something?

I am trying to convert a VB5 program to VB2010 so that I can continue to support it on my new PC. My copy of VB5 was an upgrade from VB3 which was an upgrade from VB2 which came on floppies, so I can't just install every preceding version as my new PC doesn't have a floppy drive.I have accepted that I will have to design all the forms from scratch (whatever happened to twips?) and will have to go through the thousands of lines of code line-by-line, but I have hit a brick wall when it comes to random access files. One such file is defined in the Declarations section of Module1 thus:[code]....
I soon found I had to change Type to Structure, but then in the declaration of transrec, transtype acquired a wavy blue underline with the error message: "'transrec' cannot expose type 'transtype' in namespace 'Treasurer_2010' through module 'Module1'.So if I can't use the structure in the module in which it is declared, where can I use it?

I have an application that is primarily developed on an x86 machine. I recently checked the app out of TFS onto a Win 7 x64 machine for development. However, every single form level resource file shows up in the error list with an entry like the following:
is not a valid Win32 application. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800700C1) Line 127, position 5. C:Users...shortened...FormsfrmCustomer.resx Line 127 Column 5
What I find interesting is that my application level resource files aren't showing the same error. Plus, these are just XML files. They aren't applications in any way.
I'm currently working under VB2010 beta 2 on both machines. Obviously, with a bunch of errors, the app won't compile on the x64 machine.

If I Install the programme on a machine that has Office 2003 installed - still installing the 2010 Database Engine - then it runs OK.Does the Database Engine work?

I am trying to import a bunch of excel 2003 files all with A:H columns and they are under the same headings etc. into a table in access 2003 database. This is a module in access im making. Im using a file search to look for every file that begins with Format (which they all do ) to get at all the files in the folder path. is there a more efficient way to do this? somehow select all files in a folder? and import each to the same table in access? The DoCmd.TransferSpreadsheet seeems to take each file path individually so I'm not sure how to get each file name in the folder to import it.
I have this at the moment:
Sub Import()
Dim db As Database
Set db = CurrentDb

This program is very difficult for me, but I must get threw it or I cannot finish... What I am doing is making a Database of foreign Languages with the spelling of the words and the pronounciation inside the database... The USER enters a paragraph of words into the translator textbox and pushed translate. The program has a DATABANK of words with the phonetic spellings and matches the word, then translates to phonetics. The problem is that new words keep appearing inside the language. So I incorporated a Database of 2 fields

I've tried various methods to search for files, but each time I encounter a "acces denied" error, which stops the search.Is there a way to scan for files, and skip the files it doesn't have access to, or force access to it?I want to gather all exe's on a specific drive. This works, when there are no restricted files/paths
Quote:
Dim searchResults As String() = Directory.GetFiles(cboDrives.Text, "*.exe", SearchOption.AllDirectories)

I have a program that needs to access the files that are open by another program on the computer.When my application comes up I can easily see if the other application is running with the .net Process.GetProcessesByName method
Dim MyProcesses() as Process = GetProcessesByName("AnApplication")
For Each Instance as Process in MyProcesses
If MsgBox("application is running - do you want to end it?", MsgBoxStyle.YesNo or MsgBoxStyle.Question, "Warning") = MsgBoxResult.Yes then
[code].....
The problem is that the Instance.Kill does not allow the application to end gracefully. In VB6 you could use the SendMessage API to send a close message to the application and it would end gracefully - i.e. give the user the normal closing prompt. This just slays the application - leaving any open files in their potentially incomplete state, etc.

I am writting an application that stores data in an Access database. I can't put the files in the Program Files directory since standard users can't write to that folder. I can't use a 'user' folder since multiple users will need to access the same file. In addition to accessing the file, users on occassion will copy new versions of the file into the folder, overwritting the old file.Where should I put this file? I am thinking the ProgramData folder, but when I create that folder during the install, it is also read-only for a standard user.I'm lost as to where I should put a file that can be accessed by multiple users, that is read/write, and I can install the folder into the location. I don't think I have a programmatic way of installing a file into the Public users folder.

I am working on a very simple program for someone and because it's been so long since i've programmed, I'm looking for an answer as to the best way to do the following.
My program consists of tracking incident reports and each report needs to have the data entered as well as the "paper form" linked to it that shows the members signature. I have everything completed on the program but how to get my file to link with the incident. I am using Access for my database and have been looking everywhere online on how to attachment documents within Access using the Attachment Datatype. So my question is.....
Should i find a way to import the file to Access, and if so, how do i do this, or should i just send the file path to Access as a text field, and then hyperlink the file when it is displayed on the report? I've never done anything like this and was just looking for some pointers.

It always says Access is Denied. When I copy that EXE to another folder, it runs perfectly![code]

I use text files to hold the program data, which is loaded in to variables when the program starts. I use StreamWriter to write to the text files when they update within the program. This is fine although the writer adds a extra line when I do not want this, which causes the program to error on the next use.

My application creates a file by writing to System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory() & "data/" & filename...Now this works fine usually, but I just added a setup utility to the app, so now it installs to the program files directory. It installs correctly and creates the data folder, however when it tries to write the file it gets an exception "unauthorized access".
