VS 2010 - Prevent Sub From Executing Multiple Times?
Jan 28, 2011
I have a button and various other controls that when clicked, calls as sub. However if the user clicks the button or any of the other controls multiple times, the sub appears to 'stack up'. For example, if I click the button 10 times, and then some of the menu items that trigger it 20 times, the sub would 'stack up' and execute 30 times total. How can I have the sub cancel calls to itself if its called again? I basically only want the latest call to it to count.
Heres code to reproduce it. Just a button on a form.
Dim intTotalTimesClicked As Integer = 0
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, _
ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
BlastOfNumbers()
[Code] .....

I'm trying to prevent a sub / function from firing multiple times on the same event.My app is for handling inbound phone calls (tapi).The app is supposed to route calls based on the callerid number.
aircode below:
Code:
Private Sub OnNewCall(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As NewCallEventArgs) Handles tapiManager.NewCall
if newcall.callerid = "5551001" then
redirect(newcall)
[code]....
If callA.callerid = "5551001" then redirect(callA)but, once it is redirected to the new extension, do not then grab the call from the new extension and try to redirect again (resulting in infinite loop).I realize I could use an integer as a counter, but the problem is, I might actually get more than 1 call at the same time from the same callerid number. And, all the calls would need to be redirected (once).the calls do have properties like (which are unique identifiers to each call):
Code:
phcall.id and phcall.hashcode
I'm thinking I need to put that unique id into a temp var / array to run a check against to see if it has been redirected, if it has then skip, if it has not then redirect.The app would run 24x7, and I don't want the temp var / array to get too big, and would want to have it clean automatically (up on a timer maybe?)(I'm guessing it would be a dynamically growing array.)

I used BackgroundWorker to solve a problem in my winforms application, I wanted to be able to cancel a long-running operation and see results live in ListBox while executing the operation. It works fine except when I want to add a checkbox with additional condition. The problem is when I want to run several operation at once. Ex. both XX and YY executing XX first and then start with YY in that order.
Private Sub UpdateDB_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnTestAll.Click
If cbxTestYY.Checked OrElse cbxTesteXX.Checked Then
SetBusyState(True)
If cbxTestXX.Checked Then
[Code] .....
I know I am trying to run multiple tasks on same backgroundworker which is not allowed, but I don't have any idea how to solve this so it runs in specific order.

I have written a program in VB 2010 that dumps documentation info into an Excel file. Basically, the Excel file is a log file that keeps track of revisions for design drawings at an engineering firm.
There are approximately 20 people that have access to this program. However, I've run into issues where multiple users may be using the program and trying to send info to the Excel file at the same time. The Excel file is set to read only. My program opens the file with write access, and dumps the info into the appropriate cells, then closes the file. If one person is in the process of using the program, it causes an error with another persons system if they try to use it at the same time.
In some cases, it causes my program to crash, and it leaves the Excel file open on someones system.
Typically, my program would only have the Excel file open for a couple seconds. So, the issues mentioned above are rare, but they do happen.
I'm looking for ideas to prevent this issue from occuring.

I need to disable a button after its pressed so the user does not have the ability to click it again as this would replicate the process in some cases.After alot of searching I found some tips - alot of code I found I could not understand.This is what I have come up with:
On page load:
If Me.Page.IsPostBack Then
'lblDetails.Text = "disabled"
[code]....
I also read somewhere that I should use: System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(1000) to delay the process or something - not entirely sure why I would do this though.Although, the problem with my above code is that when the code behind page performs validation checks, it exits sub before executing my INSERT SQL code - so when it does this it also disables the button.I am not entirely sure if the above method is fool proof or whether it is a **** piece of code that won't work 100% of the time.On another website I found a script to put on the actual HTML page with <script> tags:
Code:
<script type="text/javascript">
disableSubmit(frm) {
[code].....

I have a datagridview with checkboxes in the first column and I want to do a loop on saving the serialnumber(s) when the users decides to check a number of checkboxes Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
[Code]...
the problem with this code is that it only inserts the serial number of the LAST checked checkbox and the number of entries of it depends on the number of checked checkbox for example ... if I checked the rows with the serialnumber 123 and 55652341, first the row with the serial number 123 then second 55652341, only 55652341 appears in the database and it is entered twice(twice because two checkboxes are checked)

So I took this from an example. GetInstance() is called from hundred different places in my program, and when I debug, the line "Prog = New Program" keeps getting hit for each of those calls. Which I thought was exactly what should NOT happen.. Or do I have some fundamental misunderstanding?
[Code]....
It seems the "New" sub triggers a number of calls to Program.GetInstance, before the first one completes. This is due to me earlier having lots of shared public objects in this class, which are no longer shared since the class was made singleton. And these objects, when initialized, calls the Program class for reference to other of it's objects.

I have a button where I get data from a database that matches a search string I enter. Everything works fine the first time the button is clicked. However, if I click it again with a different search string, I get the same results as the original search string. I've tried to dispose, clear, and reset my dataset before I load the data each time, but it still finds the original query. This is the code I use to get and request the data:
Private Sub btnCfind_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnCfind.Click
mdbFile = "TCICUST.DBF"
mdbCond = " WHERE COMPANY LIKE '" & cbCust.Text & "%' ORDER BY COMPANY "
GetDB()

I have a DGV in VB.Net 2008 connected to an Access DB table. The DGV is not Read Only, but is full of read-only columns except for one, which contains a combo box. The combo box allows the user to select an outcome for that particular row, and then the program copies in a pre calculated value into the "Profit" column depending upon the item selected in the combobox. Then the user hits the Save button and the DB updates (currently via SQL methods in the XSD).
Easy enough so far.
Here is the code.
Private Sub DGUserBets_EditingControlShowing(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.DataGridViewEditingControlShowingEventArgs) Handles DGUserBets.EditingControlShowing
[Code]....
The problem I have is that it would seem that if a user selects the desired outcome from the combobox but does NOT hit Enter, and simply mouses on to a different combobox to again select the outcome for a different row, the first eventhandler is not disconnected and thus the events fire multiple times. This then causes various default MsgBox errors and brings up problems when the user tries to commit all changes to the DB/exit program etc etc.
What do I need to do? Do I need to .EndEdit somewhere appropriate to force the row to save the changes? And where should I call this?

I am trying to programmatically add an unspecified amount of new UserControls to a form. One will be added every time an entry is selected in a ComboBox contained within the UserControl. Problem is, the SelectedIndexChanged event fires completely erratically. Sometimes twice, sometimes 3 times, etc., but never just once. No matter how many times I set the combobox's SelectedIndex to -1, it fires at least once with a SelectedIndex of 0. Sometimes the Itemselected event fires multiple times inbetween SelectedIndexChanged events.
InvoiceEntry.vb snippet:
Public Event ItemSelected As EventHandler
Private Sub cboItem_SelectedIndexChanged(sender As System.Object, _
e As System.EventArgs) Handles cboItem.SelectedIndexChanged
RaiseEvent ItemSelected(Me, EventArgs.Empty)
End Sub

I have a report that displays some sales info. I have a query that takes the data from an SQL Server database and I store it in a dataset. Up to there everything is ok. The problem is that I need to print the same report using Crystal Reports for each row in my query. Is there any way this can be done? I call a form with a ReportViewer tool to display the reports, wich are basic .rdlc reports.

I have a block of code which is used to save some information to a text file. I need to use this a few different times in my app.I could just copy and paste it each time but that seems messy and is adding unnecessary code. I'm sure I can just save the code once and reference it when I need to. I think it's done in either a module or a class or something

I know this sounds really bad but I can't seem to figure this out. I am creating a template to use in a form. I have a few buttons that when I click on them will auto type out text into a rich text box. I figured it out for just typing in the text into the richtextbox. richtextbox1.text = "my text goes here" But if I hit the button more than once it doesn't keep adding the text to the rich text box. How can you program a button to enter a text as many times as you click the button?
