View 1 RepliesI'm trying to give the user a chance to cancel FormClosing of MDI Parent by throwing a "Are you sure?" msgbox with an e.cancel however when FormClosing is invoked by MDI Parent, all MDI Children close first, before the msgbox appears.
I was wondering if there's an easier way to prevent MDI Children from closing rather than having to e.cancel every child form's FormClosing until I get a positive response to close and then push all the close events on the children because that seems like too much of a hassle if you have a lot of MDI Children.
EDIT: I guess the only solution I can find is adding If e.CloseReason = CloseReason.MdiFormClosing Then e.Cancel = True to the FormClosing event and using ApplicationExit instead.
I'm not sure if this is the right forum or not for this, but I'll post here until I hear otherwise. This had really become a problem for me and I can't seem to find an answer. A lot of my programs will export data to excel. When the wokbook is saved it will popup a save dialog box with a progress bar and a cancel button. The problem is the dialog box loves to steal focus. This causes a problem when for instance right now it is modifying several work books and when I'm typing I could end up hitting the space bar when the dialog box steals the focus and it will cancel the save. Is there some way to prevent the dialog from showing?
For an example this is some quick code I threw together. I have several workbooks that have more data than I need to archive. So it goes into each one and deletes those excess rows. The workbooks are in 2003 format, but I'm running 2007.

how to prevent a popup toolbox window (Form) from stealing the parent Form's focus?I've been told to override CreateParams and use WS_EX_NOACTIVATE (0x08000000) but that does not seem to work (see the code segment shown below). I'm using Show() and not ShowDialog().
Protected Overrides ReadOnly Property CreateParams() As System.Windows.Forms.CreateParams
Get
Dim cp As CreateParams = MyBase.CreateParams

Actually i'm trying to show and dialog into a parent form, An reference example is:[code]Form that is not a top-level form cannot be displayed as a modal dialog box. Remove the form from any parent form before calling showDialog.
View 1 RepliesIs there a way to detect if a file is being deleted,
1) Using the Del key
2) Using the Shift+Del keys
3) Using the above keys from a remote computer through a shared folder
And instead of deleting move it to another folder in the same computer. Basically when a user tries to delete a file or folder it should move it to a specified folder instead of deleting it.
I've added a needed feature to my program where the user will move their completed forms to the network drive. Currently the program finds all associated files in the source directory and then moves them, but I was wondering if there is a way to move only selected files or multiple files at a given time. Using VS 2010, I've looked at the open and save file dialog boxes, but open only lets me select one file at a time while the save dialog box does not let me move them. Just wondering of some ideas/suggestions for this.
View 1 RepliesI am creating a button now when clicked, a color dialog control will show, is there anyway I can control where the dialog goes? i prefer it shows below the button. There seems to be no properties to specify position in colordialog.
View 1 RepliesI have downloaded a program for moving files and it accepts visual basic instructions. I want to down a level all the files from multiples subdirectories to its parent directory. Example:
I have this:
C:VIDEOSTHEWIRESEASON 22X012X01.avi
C:VIDEOSTHEWIRESEASON 22X022X02.avi
C:VIDEOSTHEWIRESEASON 22X032X03.avi
And I want to have all the files in just one directory, like this:
C:VIDEOSTHEWIRESEASON 22X01.avi
C:VIDEOSTHEWIRESEASON 22X02.avi
C:VIDEOSTHEWIRESEASON 22X03.avi
If I show a new non-modal child window using .Show(frmParent), and then the parent window is minimized, the child will get minimized automatically as well.

View 1 RepliesThis is a challenging one that got me stumped while I was coding today. Suppose I am running the Sub Test1() and Test2() and would like to print out the value of the Shadows method of the instance of the object I am passing in to TestCall() (see below - it is clearer) using the following restrictions:
Can't change the contents of Class A, B, and C
Can't change Sub Test1() and Sub Test2()
TestCall() can't have an if, select case etc. statement that tries to figure out the type

I have a main form, and some sub forms, and each sub form can have some sub forms. When I have multiple sub forms open, and I try to get data from the parent form, it returns the data from the wrong parent form.For example I have two instances of Mainform.subform running. If I do something like this in a child form of one instance of the subform. It returns data from the other subform.
dim l = Mainform.subform.listofdata
Edit:I am using visual Studio 2008. Winforms, form designed using designer. In my mainform I am doing this
Protected Friend frmMain as Mainform
frmmain = new mainform
In frmMain I am doing this
Protected Friend frmsub as new Subform'
frmsub = new subform

I would like to know if there is some simple code to release a child control from it's parent control, without having to name the parent control. In pseudocode, I'm looking for something like this:
[Code]...
I have a simple desktop application that uses a .NET setup project (.msi file) to perform the installation. On the first installation, everything proceeds in a timely fashion with good feedback for the user.The problem occurs when the user is installing the latest version of the application over an old version on their machine.There is an unacceptably long delay of about 60 to 180 seconds from the time the installer's 'Welcome' dialog [It's not the Welcome dialog, I've removed that from the Start section of the setup project and replaced it with a CheckBox dialog to ask if the user wants a shortcut on the desktop] disappears until the 'Progress' dialog appears. The user sees minute(s) of blank screen and thinks the install has stopped or failed.
In the setup project properties, I've got the 'DetectNewerInstalledVersion' and 'RemovePreviousVersions' properties set to true. So, I believe that while nothing appears to be happening, the installer is actually removing the old version. The 'Progress' dialog does not appear until the new version begins installation.I've been trying to either:
a) Get the 'Progress' dialog to display immediately after the 'Install Icon' dialog disappears
b) Show another dialog while the Uninstall is running to let the user know that the setup is still running and everything is OK.
I have been unsuccessful with both methods. I'm using VS 2008 SP1?
Can I create new dialog results for my dialog forms? And then use them with Form.ShowDialog method?
View 13 RepliesIs there a way to launch a Modeless Dialog that stays active even when a Modal Dialog is launched? Can I put the Modeless Dialog in a seperate Thread or something like that?
View 3 RepliesI often use the process of displaying a dialog from a form, with the dialog user input then used to update the main form without any problem. In a new scenerio I launch the main application screen, I then show a login dialog ontop of the main app screen and can launch another dialog from the login if a new user is required. The plan is to update the login dialog (updating a combobox to reflect the addition of a new user) from the new user dialog.
See code below :-
'Update login forms user list as new user added successfully
frmRoomBookingLogin.cboLogin.DataSource = Nothing
frmRoomBookingLogin.txtPassword.Text = "Updating password from dialog"
MessageBox.Show("The password text is " & frmRoomBookingLogin.txtPassword.Text)
[code]....
The messagebox implies the dialog has been updated yet the text does not change. Is it possible to update the dialog when using a setup such as Form -> dialog -> dialog? I'm intrigued as why the dialog does not reflect changes. I have never refreshed/repainted the dialog as never required to in my other examples when updating a form from a dialog and never encountered a problem when using a two tier form setup.
I have an assignment due this week in which I have to make a app that has 5 buttons and a picture box. When each button is clicked it has to show the corresponding picture in the picture box, the fifth button closes the app.
I have the whole form set up the way it should be, but I have no idea how to write the code to make the buttons display the images and close the app.I have the images in a folder within the project folders.
I have yet to be able to find one, the one I found should how to do it using a file opener dialog and a folder browser dialog but that is not what I think my prof wants us to do, as that is more for a picture viewer app that lets the user choose the file of the image they want ot view.
All i want is for the buttons to be linked to specific photos that are part of the application itself and have them open.
Is there a way to launch a Modeless Dialog that stays active even when a Modal Dialog is launched? Can I put the Modeless Dialog in a seperate Thread or something like that?

After the dialog I have an if statement: If frmRelease.ShowDialog() <> Windows.Forms.DialogResult.Cancel then.My buttons are set as DialogResult = OK and DialogResult = Cancel respectively on the dialog form.
For some reason, sometimes my button set to DialogResult = OK is returning me a DialogResult.Cancel, and causing me to skip a block of cleanup code.

I'm using a DLL in vb.net 2005, and this dll show a messagebox with OK option. I would like to close this Messagebox by code.
I was investigating to use SetWindowsHookEx, but I can not detect it. Is it possible to don't show any dialog, or detect the dialog using the dll name?
