I am about to develop a software (VB .Net) that generates and reads barcodes. The backend db is sql server.
1. I have a major id and sub ids. For example I have major ID A, and subgroups A0, A1, An. Also I could have more detailed subgroups like A01, A02 and so on.
I need to generate and print these barcodes from my VB application.
2. The handheld scanner is used to read the generated barcodes and pull their data and show them on the screen.

What I want to do is to break up a string in case it won't fit on the page, do not sugest to search for the lenght of the string itself because I am not interested in the number of characters, as you may know, PrintDocument "draws" the text on the page so on proportionate fonts, the number of characters is independent on the lenght of the output.

Of course I could use monospaced fonts like courier or the like but... well, I don't want to.
i have a printing to do and there are several ways to print.i know how to print using the printdocument or creating a crystal report and print or transfer the data into an excel sheet and then print(but it needs the excel to be installed in the host computer)but i cant understand which one is the best and mostly preferred.

Currently, if I print to a printer that has a jam, is offline, or doesn't even exist, VB still thinks it printed fine. I never get an error. How can I have the printer report back to my program so that if I print to a printer that doesn't even exist, it wont let me do it? I just tried adding a LPT1 printer to my computer (and there is no local printer). I called it some random printer and installed some random driver. Then used my program to print to that printer and never got an error.

View 1 RepliesI made a small application in VB.NET that allows user to scan a bunch of barcodes and save them in the database.Application works both for the regular computer browser and handheld pocket PC.Barcode can be either scanned into upc text field and automatically submitted to db or numbers can be manually added into upc text field and pressing Enter will add it to db.There are also two buttons on the page. One button "Clear" is to clear upc field in case user started a manual input and didn't like it. Second button "Exit" logs out a user.
User should just scan a barcode and it will be automatically added to db without pressing any Submit button so user can go through a lot of barcodes fast. In order to achieve this, upc text field has AutoPostBack property set to True.Then in the Page_Load event if len(upc.text)>0, then data from upc.text gets submitted to db and upc.text gets empty again.If len(upc.text) =0, nothing happens.So it works fine in case of a handheld. It scans and sets upc.text to empty string. So if I scan and press Exit button after that, I just exit without a problem.
But there is a bug if I input a upc number manually and then press an Exit button for some reason. Pressing a button causes the page to reload and number gets submitted to the database anyway though I just wanted to exit. In fact, if there is any data in the upc field, any action, pressing Enter, pressing the button, clicking with mouse on the screen, causes that data to be submitted to db in the page_load event.How can I avoid this situation if I still want items to be submitted automatically without pressing any button while scanning?
I want to develop a small application that reads in scanned barcodes into a database table - Would a vb.net form based application that connects to the database be best approach? What I'm think is each time the user scans in the barcode - a message appears on the form saying the barcode that has been scanned.
1.Would I need to program anything within the program to check whether the barcode scanner is connected (or is this not necessary since it works like a keyboard device?)
2. How could I automate the scanning in without requiring any user intervention like a button which saves it to the database - so basically as soon as a barcode is scanned in - it is saved to the database and the next barcode can be scanned in etc.
I create some reports or documents in my vb 2008 application using the Printing.printdocument object.I have no problem when i print to a printer but I also need to print directly to a PDF file, and specify the filename in the code. I don't want to have any interaction with the filename dialog box. It must be totally transparent to the user. Does anyone have an idea to help me? I don't find anything on the net?

I have a program that prints using the printdocument control. How do I check for errors in the program. Sometimes the program prints ok, sometimes the print does not print at all or give any feedback about the status of the print.
Bireirectional printing is enabled on the printer.
The program prints barcoded orders to a barcode label printer. The supplier's only cue to supply is the printed barcode label. I can see in the program that the orders are getting queued, and at certain intervals a timer runs to update each available order's status to "printed".As far as I am aware, there is no "Error" event of the printdocument control, and the printing is an asynchronous operation. I am having problems trying to center some text. I created a printdocument and it has a company name and title and then other information I have the information fine but I wanted to center the company name [code]I know I have to get the width of the page then divide it by two and after that find out how long my text is then subtract that so it still prints center screen. Pretty much right now it prints out and runs off the right side of the page.But what I would like it to do is print in the Center but have equal margins on the sides of the page still.Just like clicking Center allignment on a word doc.

I'm sending a rtl text "Arabic" to a receipt printer. My problem is in selecting left and top coordinates for each line. If the paper width changes the whole procedure needs to be written for that specific width, because I'm measuring form the left edge. Is there a way in the printDocument object that flips the starting point from left to right?
p.s. the format string in the args.Graphics.DrawString() only select the direction of the printed string in case it has some numbers and symbols but it doesn't start the string from the right edge of the page.
The project I am working on requires me to printout a form and email the printout to another department within my company. I have the printout exactly the way I need it, but I am not clear on how to save the PrintDocument to an image. I'm using the PrintPreviewDialog and am wondering how I can change a boolean variable after the PrintDocument has been rendered in the dialog window. I found out that using the dialog's Shown event fires before the PrintDocument has been rendered so the boolean gets changed before the document's been rendered. I can't use any of the PrintDocument's events to change the boolean since the preview dialog is not always used unless there's a way I can use the EndPrint event to detect that the PrintDocument's owner is the PrintPreviewDialog or an actual printer or something.

View 2 RepliesThis is a scratchy rough copy (Published as Version 1.1.0 because there was a huge logic error in 1.0.0), and I was wondering if anyone could give me pointers on how to make the code better. The heart of the program is here. I don't have the code for the SplashScreen, AboutBox, and the InstructionsForm because that is unnecessary. The main issue that I have is with the large EndSalesButton_Click event. The big block there is driving my eyes and brain crazy while trying to test the logic. So, to sum up everything, can anyone make that look nicer and easier on the mind?
