Application That Reads In Scanned Barcodes Into A Database Table

I want to develop a small application that reads in scanned barcodes into a database table - Would a vb.net form based application that connects to the database be best approach? What I'm think is each time the user scans in the barcode - a message appears on the form saying the barcode that has been scanned.
1.Would I need to program anything within the program to check whether the barcode scanner is connected (or is this not necessary since it works like a keyboard device?)
2. How could I automate the scanning in without requiring any user intervention like a button which saves it to the database - so basically as soon as a barcode is scanned in - it is saved to the database and the next barcode can be scanned in etc.

I have a simple Windows Service that reads from an Excel spreadsheet and imports the records into a SQL Server 2000 database table. Before it loads it checks if the file has been successfully imported before (using filename) and whether any of the records in the file have been imported before (using primary key). If these checks are ok I load the records into a datatable and then update the datatable to the database.
However, I need to do this in a transaction as I want to ignore the whole file if there is an error. The file goes to a discarded folder and the user gets an email with why the import failed. (This is likely to be because the store the record is for is not yet added to the database and the referential intergrity of the db fails). If there is no transaction the records before the failure record are imported. When the file is imported again (the store has been added to store table) the file is then rejected because duplicate records are already in the db.

I am about to develop a software (VB .Net) that generates and reads barcodes. The backend db is sql server.
1. I have a major id and sub ids. For example I have major ID A, and subgroups A0, A1, An. Also I could have more detailed subgroups like A01, A02 and so on.
I need to generate and print these barcodes from my VB application.
2. The handheld scanner is used to read the generated barcodes and pull their data and show them on the screen.

I made a small application in VB.NET that allows user to scan a bunch of barcodes and save them in the database.Application works both for the regular computer browser and handheld pocket PC.Barcode can be either scanned into upc text field and automatically submitted to db or numbers can be manually added into upc text field and pressing Enter will add it to db.There are also two buttons on the page. One button "Clear" is to clear upc field in case user started a manual input and didn't like it. Second button "Exit" logs out a user.
User should just scan a barcode and it will be automatically added to db without pressing any Submit button so user can go through a lot of barcodes fast. In order to achieve this, upc text field has AutoPostBack property set to True.Then in the Page_Load event if len(upc.text)>0, then data from upc.text gets submitted to db and upc.text gets empty again.If len(upc.text) =0, nothing happens.So it works fine in case of a handheld. It scans and sets upc.text to empty string. So if I scan and press Exit button after that, I just exit without a problem.
But there is a bug if I input a upc number manually and then press an Exit button for some reason. Pressing a button causes the page to reload and number gets submitted to the database anyway though I just wanted to exit. In fact, if there is any data in the upc field, any action, pressing Enter, pressing the button, clicking with mouse on the screen, causes that data to be submitted to db in the page_load event.How can I avoid this situation if I still want items to be submitted automatically without pressing any button while scanning?

We have a reporting app thats needs to update it's charts as the data gets written to it's corresponding table. (the report is based off just one table). Currently we just keep the last read sessionid + rowid (unique combo) in memory and a polling timer just does a select where rowid > what we have in memory (to get the latest rows added). Timer runs every second or so and the fast sql reader does it's job well. So far so good. However I feel this is not optimal because sometimes there are pauses in the data writes due to the process by design. (user clicking the pause button on the system that writes data). Meanwhile our timer keeps hitting the db and does not get any new rows. No errors or anything. How is this situation normally handled. The app that writes the data is separate from the reporting app. The 2 apps run on different machines. Bottomline : How to get data into a c# app as and when it is written into a sql server table without polling unnecessarily.

I am writing a windows service that will read records from one table and write them to another table. Problem is when i declare cmd = New SqlCommand(l_sSQL) the code stop executing but the service will still be running. I can insert into the other table using the service but i cant read from the other table.

I have a hardware which sends out packets containing 17 bytes to the comport in bursts of 3. the little test VB that I have written receives and displays the bytes in a line of 17 bytes long and works fine until it gets to around 170th packet, then it starts to mix up (looks like shifting the data left) the bytes shift mostly by one digit sometimes by two. then it will continue to give almost a packet correct and a packet shifted for about 50 packets. Then it will correct itself for a long while, but then the speed at which it receives drops. All the packets are sent 3 times, and before things go wrong (within the first 170 packets) the packet counter shows that it receives 3 packet each time but after the problem it goes to 2 packet per burst and then to one.
If i close my VB monitoring program say at packet 165 and immediately open it again, it wont go wrong for another 170 packets, this points the finger at VB. I have check my hardware, there is no problem with that.The program reads port - waits for 17 bytes - once 17 has been received it will go and buffer the packet in an array. In fact they are 2 arrays but printing fro either results in the same problem.I have tried whatever i could think of but to no avail, i am wondering if some kind of house keeping needs to be done to clear something... My application reads information from an Excel spreadsheet into a DataSet (ds1) which is then filtered into another DataSet (ds2) based on user-specified criteria. The information is basically telephone call logs that reflects when a phone call was made,what extension it was made one, how long the call was, what number was called, etc.When the user's "search" criteria is matched in ds1 above, the application adds the number called to a ListBox on the form. When the ListBox Item is selected, additional information (call duration and such) is displayed to the right of the ListBox. My problem is that a single phone number could have been called multiple times on an extension within the date range the user specifies and for each occurrence of that number in the ListBox, the "expanded" info only reflects the information for the 1st call to that number listed in the DataSet.
The only unique identifier I have is the DateTime field for the row (as this goes up to the second). I thought about putting it into the ListBox item, but I'd prefer that this date not be visible until the user selects the ListBox item to view the details for that call. [code]

I am developing an application that reads an MDI applications child window and grabs the information from a control such as a textbox or listbox. I have tried to use Findwindow in order to accomplish this. I have gotten all the way to the control, but once I get there it returns blank. Can anyone point me in the right direction to accomplish this.I am able to read the window title and get the control title but when I send a message to the window it returns 0. I'm having problem with our germany customers whose operating system uses dot as thousand separator and comma as decimal point.I have an application which reads some text from an Access database, parse it into data and display on a datagridview,the program also needs to write the data into another file as input to another application. right now, it seems when my application parses doubles (say 0.2500),germany os will always return everything except the decimal dot(so 0.2500 becomes 2500),and that just messed up the whole process...so my question is, how can we detect the locale of the windows and parse the doubles correctly?

I need an application which opens a table from a database(in my project) in a Datagridview. Then it allows me to modify it and save the table. I managed to do all this but when I open the database in my project( with Ms Access) the data remains the same. Why is this happening?

I have created an windows application which stores it data in a database. What I would like to know is how do I access the tables in the dataqbase and transfer the data in them into textboxes on the forms in my application. I can connect to the database and view the tables, but I have'nt got any idea how to get the data from the fields in the tables into the appropriate textboes on the application forms.

I want to (SQL) select from a table in an Oracle database, and show the results of the query in the VB application, in a Excel like manner (rows, columns, selectable, etc.). Or in a SQL developer manner. How can I do that? Browsed through a lot of tutorials and howtos on the internet, did not get anywhere. I think (and correct me if I am wrong) that it's gotta be something with DataGridView. But I don't know how to create and populate a datatable with the result of as Select statement, how to create a dataset.

[Code] my issue is that now i need two cases, first i need a query that will return the date created and modified of the table and i also need to know if its possible to query a list of table names in the database ordered by date created but that have a certain thing in their names. for example the database contains the following tables: [Code] and what i need the query to return is the tables that contain "Data", settings and employees are for the other functions of the program. so the query should return the 4 data tables in order of date created. but i have no idea how to go about doing that in the query, does anyone know how this is done?

I have a PDF file with n pages, I need to split it to n files. On each page I have barcode, I need to recognize/read barcode. If I have two files with the same barcode I need to merge them.Can anyone recommend an .net component or exe or something else that will help me? I have a data logging application that stores data in a table in a MySQL database. Data with a TimeStamp is logged into the table anytime the data from the sensor changes. This means that there maybe 2 seconds between data points or there maybe 20 seconds between points depending on how the data is changing.
When I need the data I have 2 dates and use this command to fill a table..SELECT FROM myTable WHERE timeStamp > date1 AND timeStamp < date2 This gets all the data that has a TimeStamp between the given dates, but in most case the first date in the returned table will be after date1, so I need to get the data from one row before the date returned in the table to know what the data was at date1.How can I get the data row that immediately precedes the returned data set?
