German Windows Decimals - Reads Some Text From An Access Database?
Feb 14, 2011
I'm having problem with our germany customers whose operating system uses dot as thousand separator and comma as decimal point.I have an application which reads some text from an Access database, parse it into data and display on a datagridview,the program also needs to write the data into another file as input to another application. right now, it seems when my application parses doubles (say 0.2500),germany os will always return everything except the decimal dot(so 0.2500 becomes 2500),and that just messed up the whole process...so my question is, how can we detect the locale of the windows and parse the doubles correctly?

I have a simple Windows Service that reads from an Excel spreadsheet and imports the records into a SQL Server 2000 database table. Before it loads it checks if the file has been successfully imported before (using filename) and whether any of the records in the file have been imported before (using primary key). If these checks are ok I load the records into a datatable and then update the datatable to the database.
However, I need to do this in a transaction as I want to ignore the whole file if there is an error. The file goes to a discarded folder and the user gets an email with why the import failed. (This is likely to be because the store the record is for is not yet added to the database and the referential intergrity of the db fails). If there is no transaction the records before the failure record are imported. When the file is imported again (the store has been added to store table) the file is then rejected because duplicate records are already in the db.
Heres my code:

As I said, I have a vb.net application which runs perfectly fine on Windows XP EN. However, it becomes problematic when run it under Windows XP in German Language. I have a string type in app.config file, it stores a color's RGB value "0,102,255" as a string. When the application starts loading, I will grab that value as a string and use ColorConverter object to convert it to a color as shown the following
Dim oConverter As New ColorConverter
Dim oColor As Color = CType(oConverter.ConvertFromString(My.Settings.MyColorString), Color)

Dim y as integer
dim x as double = 125 / 60
y = Convert.ToInt32(x) 'removes decimals
That method works, it removes all the numbers after the decimal.
But, how to check if the double contains a decimal and if it has it, remove all the numbers after it?
I have tested all the possible solutions i can think of, but I always run into a lot of errors

I have a hardware which sends out packets containing 17 bytes to the comport in bursts of 3. the little test VB that I have written receives and displays the bytes in a line of 17 bytes long and works fine until it gets to around 170th packet, then it starts to mix up (looks like shifting the data left) the bytes shift mostly by one digit sometimes by two. then it will continue to give almost a packet correct and a packet shifted for about 50 packets. Then it will correct itself for a long while, but then the speed at which it receives drops. All the packets are sent 3 times, and before things go wrong (within the first 170 packets) the packet counter shows that it receives 3 packet each time but after the problem it goes to 2 packet per burst and then to one.
If i close my VB monitoring program say at packet 165 and immediately open it again, it wont go wrong for another 170 packets, this points the finger at VB. I have check my hardware, there is no problem with that.The program reads port - waits for 17 bytes - once 17 has been received it will go and buffer the packet in an array. In fact they are 2 arrays but printing fro either results in the same problem.I have tried whatever i could think of but to no avail, i am wondering if some kind of house keeping needs to be done to clear something... I am sorry the program is a bit messy but I have been making many changes to find out what the problem is - my code below:[code]

facing some problems to achieve what I want. I have this piece of code which is working fine. My problem is that I want to display the results of the Text Boxes 2, 5 and 8 with thousands separated by commas and only with two decimals separated by dot , e.g. 1,234,567.89. I tried using Format and other options but I was unable to get the correct result.
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
If Not IsNumeric(TextBox1.Text) Or (ComboBox1.Text = "" And ComboBox2.Text = "") Then
MsgBox("Valores invlidos ou definies incompletas", MsgBoxStyle.Information)
TextBox1.Text = ""

i have an old VB6 system that generates plain text files. When this old system writes "A" into the file, it writes (hex) "41". For an "ä" (a-umlaut, special gernam character), it writes (hex) "E4".
Now i have to process files like this in VB.Net. when i open such a file in the IDE, it displays correctly "ä" (But not always!). To see what i mean, please open a notepad and create a new file "ae.txt" with content: äöü. Now your file contains exactly 3 bytes: (hex) E4 F6 FC.
But when i write code like
Dim strTest As String
strTest = File.ReadAllText("ae.txt")
Debug.Print(InStr(strTest, "ä"))
i get 0 - so i cannot find back the "ä" - what do i need to do, to find it? And 2) for compatibility reasons, i have also to be able to create such files. How to do that? Seems the different encoding types do not work as i think.

I want to develop a small application that reads in scanned barcodes into a database table - Would a vb.net form based application that connects to the database be best approach? What I'm think is each time the user scans in the barcode - a message appears on the form saying the barcode that has been scanned.
1.Would I need to program anything within the program to check whether the barcode scanner is connected (or is this not necessary since it works like a keyboard device?)
2. How could I automate the scanning in without requiring any user intervention like a button which saves it to the database - so basically as soon as a barcode is scanned in - it is saved to the database and the next barcode can be scanned in etc.

I am writing an app that reads from the com port, filters the data, then writes to the text box, then immediately starts over. This all takes place in an endless " do while" loop within the "start" button code. I also have a end button too which closes the com port and ends the program. Some other buttons are present also to change the filter settings.Problem is when I click start, data is logged, but none of the other buttons work. Also some of the text boxes are "see through" and dont look like thy have updated with the rest of the form.

I'm trying to create a program which reads a text file into an array.

But that's just silly so how can I fix this? Lines isn't being assigned a null value it's being assigned the first line of text in the file which has text in it so I'm confused.

I am working on a project that involes reading an Excel file, picking through it, then creating a flat CSV file. One of the the data elements I am picking up is a 9 character string that may be numeric, or contain one or more alpha chatacters. Excel has a nasty habit of converting long numerics to scientific notaion. I can overcome this by converting the "general" string to "TEXT".
However, there is one instance where I can not get the function to work...the string is "90333E108" ( the CUSIP for USU). Regardless, the text string is saved properly into the CSV file. When opened in a text editor, it reads correctly.
When opened with Excel, it is in scientific notation. Changing the field to "text" from "scientific" still displays "9.03E+112".
how to create an csv file that Excel will open and read correctly?
You can test this by creating an Excel workbook, format all cells as TEXT and add the following data:
90333E108
123

I have a piece of code that reads in lines of tabbed text. It is a game of who wants to be a millionaire. What I would like to do is get the game to incorporate random questioning.
The format of the text file is as follows:
Which record company did the Beatles create? (tab)Apple Records (tab)Sony (tab)BMG (tab)LiteFM (tab)Apple Records (tab) Which has the highest mountain? (tab)Mars (tab)Ireland (tab)Iceland (tab)America (tab)Mars(tab) With a set amount of lines. I want the program to choose each question randomly and not to repeat the question. I'm not sure how to incorporate it into the code.

I have a VB.Net windows application which needs to modify a MS Access database availabe in server. The login user does not have permission to the folder where the database is available. So I am using windows impersonation with another user's credentials to access to that folder.This works fine and I am able to create a new text file in that folder. But when I try to access the database try to get a dataset from the database, it gives "unspecified error". When I check in the internet some people say that there could be problem with temporary files that OleDB tries to create.

The problem has been simplified for the purpose of clarity. I want to make a windows form application that uses an access database. The application will store the list of person's basic details such as name, age and country. The database contains two related tables ie person(id, name, age, country_id) and country(id, country_name) My windows form contains TextBox, DateTimePicker, ComboBox for Name, Age and Country respectively. Now I want to make CRUD operation Programmatically (Not using Visual tools) in the same form with some navigation buttons.

I have a VB.Net program which reads and writes to an Access database. I am trying to deploy the program using a setup (created with INNO Setup). Upon installation on a Windows 7 computer, Windows 7 is preventing it from writing data without changing the permission settings. It reads data but it doesn't write data. This problem doesn't happen in Windows XP. My question is: is there any way to make the Visual Basic .Net program write data to an Access database on Windows 7 from the setup without the user having to change permission settings?

I have written a simple VB.NET program that connects to a MS Access Database. This program runs in Windows 7 XP Mode, but does not run properly in straight Windows 7. Somehow, the Windows 7 does not connect properly or read the MS Access database data properly with the DataAdapter.Fill method. I have dual monitors, so I can run the identical program side by side (one in Windows 7 and the other in XP Mode) - one works and the other doesn't (it doesn't crash, it just get "nothing" from the database when accessing - acts like it's not connected). Has anyone else run into this, or similar, problem with VB.NET and MS Access connectivity?

Im trying to come up with a do while statement that reads through a text file till the end while pulling out 3 different matched items, then writing those matched items to ascending spots in an excel file, and then creating a bar graph according to the saved data. Sounds complicated but...I have the program reading the text file, pulling out the first iteration of all three, writing them to an excel file, and I have it even graphing them the way I want it to. The only thing I havent done before (and which is probably the easiest), is creating the do while statement so it keeps searching line to line for the three interactions of what im looking for and writing them to ascending spots in the excel file.
Right now my code works like this, which is perfect for pulling out the first 3 and creating a graph, I just inserting a do while and a rowindex + 1 variable.
vb Dim alines() = System.IO.File.ReadAllLines("C:deviceinfo.txt")
Dim amatch As String
Dim muvalue As String
[CODE]................
I have a feeling in order to pull this off, I do not want to use the, "ReadAllLines" option and possibly want to put the text into an array.
And do something like: if lines.count > 0
But im not familiar with how arrays work in VB, and more specifically what the syntax is. The other tricky thing I am trying to add is an if statement that adds to a variable (such as i) everytime a line is added to excel so the program will write to ascending lines. I was trying to have the it work with the do while statement but pretty soon realized that if I did: i = i +1. Everytime it went through the loop then the data was going to be on random lines corresponding to their place in the text.
