Pure Text Files / Handle Special (german) Characters In .net Vs VB6 Old Files?
Jul 17, 2009
i have an old VB6 system that generates plain text files. When this old system writes "A" into the file, it writes (hex) "41". For an "ä" (a-umlaut, special gernam character), it writes (hex) "E4".
Now i have to process files like this in VB.Net. when i open such a file in the IDE, it displays correctly "ä" (But not always!). To see what i mean, please open a notepad and create a new file "ae.txt" with content: äöü. Now your file contains exactly 3 bytes: (hex) E4 F6 FC.
But when i write code like
Dim strTest As String
strTest = File.ReadAllText("ae.txt")
Debug.Print(InStr(strTest, "ä"))
i get 0 - so i cannot find back the "ä" - what do i need to do, to find it? And 2) for compatibility reasons, i have also to be able to create such files. How to do that? Seems the different encoding types do not work as i think.
I have a very huge server log files like files are more than 500 to 600 mb and even some files are over 2 gb data. the files are maintained for few years. it will be maintained as is. each log file has at least 1 million lines to 20 million lines.I am looking create an application which can find a line in the text file using regex, removing duplicate entries.how these huge file can be handled in a way it works very quickly.
I have a requirement of storing the following lines in a text file using VB.Net
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1" ?> <!DOCTYPE scenario SYSTEM "anup.dtd"> I am unable to add the entire line enclosing it between " and ". I have used the
I have a text box where users will enter 4 digits that are ONLY numbers 0-9. I have blocked all letters and less than 4 or greater than 4 digits. But, for example if I enter 10.0, it will throw an exception, due to incorrect math used later in the prog. So how can I block the use of a (.) or any special character for that matter! I am using specific msgboxes to let the user know what isn't allowed, and would like to do the same for special characters.
What I have so far:
If Val(txtEntered.Text) < 0 Or (IsNumeric(txtEntered.Text) = False) Then MsgBox("Sorry, but letters are not allowed!")
I'm working on a form in which strings of text are being imported. A lot of these strings contain special characters, like , , , &, , etc...
When I convert these strings to text, so they can be shown as labels, the special characters either disappear (like the '&' sign) or they are shown as some sort of icons. How can I let VB handle these strings, so the special characters are shown the way they should, without having to change the (many hundreds) original strings of text?
I want a form to search a directory (which i specify in the code) and then list all files with a file exstension that is .amxx .And that's not all, it should list them in a checked listbox. And of course a little + is that it only list the name of the file, not the hole directory + filename. But that feuture i don't really need, just for good looking.I looked into the problem and i tried something with DirectorySearcher but with no success.
I need to be able to add (specific) special characters to text boxes. Problem is, there are five of them spread across two forms and three tabpages. What I'd like to do is bring up a form when the user presses something like "F2" while the text boxes are focused, then on that form would be a grid of buttons. When the user pushes a button, the character is added to the box. How do I get this form to reference the box that called it without passing a global variable or calling a public function? I tried Form3.Parent.Name, but that always seems to refer to nothing. Also, once this is done how can I get it to just insert a character where the cursor on the calling box is? It probably shouldn't even be on a form either since that will take the focus when it's called (which I don't want)
Im designing a program that will read from various text files (preferably RTF files) and then put them into the RTF box in the program when a button is clicked.
Here is the portion of my code that i am referring to.
Try Dim fileText As String = My.Computer.FileSystem.ReadAllText("c:\" & selectedHero & ".rtf")
Catch MsgBox("Selected Hero currently has no File with us.") End Try
Now heres the problem. In the file i have a few pictures and its formatted and what not. I thought since its a RTF file and the Box is RTF it would auto format.... but anyways. It appears like this in the RTF Box.
On a image file (PDF), the OCR has recognised the picture and text. However on Visual Basics, how do you search for a text on this image file? The primary goal is to allow a text search (i.e POxxxxx) on all the image files (PDFs). The returns of the search will be the assciated image files where the text (i.e POxxxxx) is found on.
If I want the saved files from a application to get special icons, how do I do that in VB? For a f ew years ago when I programmed to Mac, in RealBasic, it was just to add icons and associate them with the extension.
I am trying to create a program which will read the files that exist in a directory, and then write in a text file the specific information (full file name, date created)i have found several code in the site but i cant make it work, the machine i am running the code is XP and i am using VB2008.The code i have found is the following:
what i want to is convert this string to something like this
2. JXK2LB AP2WXB S1P0XE ZXPA3H X1LAKW DOXPS3
both 1 & 2 the above strings are fictitious (i made them up to make my point clear)
I am trying to make a licensing system for my VB 2010 express application. (2) above will act as a serial key which can be derived from (1) which is an encrypted form of something unique of the client computer.
im trying to split a folder of text files into several folders of no more then 12 files a piece, we have wedding photos 1-144 which would like to have um split into folders of 1-12,13-25 etc, found something that might work but it does it by files size
Code: Imports System.IO Public Class Form1 Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Essentially I am trying to replicate the Windows 7 (In-Windows) activation key TextBox form. The Form where it will auto capitalize letters, remove or deny all non alphanumeric characters except dashes every 5 characters that will be auto-input.I assume this can be done with a fairly complicated replacement Regular Expression but I cannot seem to create one to fit the needs.
This is an Example of what I have right now, but it creates an infinite loop as it removes all characters including dashes, than adds a dash, which changes the text and removes the dash again.
i need to access to a special folder and operate there, but i don't have permission to do this, how i can set permission to access to special folder and delete/create files?
I have two textboxes. I type in one of them and the text gets copied in real time into another textbox. There is one catch. I need to replace specific character with something else.
If I enter a quote " in textbox1, it has to be replaced with " in textbox2.
I started with something like the below code, but obviously this does not work (tried different stuff - this is for demonstration only). In the example below 'a' represents " , and 'b' represents "
Private Sub TextBox1_KeyUp(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles TextBox1.KeyUp TextBox2.Text = TextBox1.Text

I have configured IIS6 to get .NET to handle css files.I did the following steps
Launch IIS Manager Right-click on Default Web Site Click on the Home Directory tab Under Application Settings click on Configuration.Add a new association for .css and map it to .NET executable:
How can I check if this is working, i.e. I want to change the default style of a page depending on the url, i.e. if the referer url is http://intranet, it should continue to use the old existing style style1.css, if the referer url is http://intranetv2, it should use the new style style2.css.
how to make VB handle my associated files.I made a program that opens fine when from the EXE file. But however, when I try to open it from the associated file, it behaves the same way as if opened from the EXE.So, where (in what method?) do I tell VB how to handle those files?
Im struggling with gettings the values from the right strings.txt in my resource files in my in folder when switching languages.
[default.aspx.vb] Partial Class _Default Inherits System.Web.UI.Page Shared rm As ResourceManager = HttpContext.Current.Application("RM")
[code]....
Now, all files seem to be created correctly. However, when I go to the [URL], the values in binstrings.txt are used and NOT (like I would expect and desire), the values from binenstrings.en.txt?
I'm doing a project where we are re-creating a very old system. The client wants the same base functionality and some improvements. One of the things I'm currently working on is the note-system. These are used as flags of some sort, but are also used as a comment field for some products or client profiles. In the old system you could write the text and save it like you would get in a .txt file. They want the new one to be able to do word formatting such as:
Different font sizes (Only some parts of the text) Different font colours (Only some parts of the text) Underlining of words Bolding Italics Tab-spaces
Those are the specs they want. What I need to know is the following:
1) How do I do that?
2) Currently they store all these files on the server as text files and the database have paths that refers to each file. I want to be able to save a text file with that formatting to the HDD of the server like in the old system.
3) If possible I would like to save that text to the database with the formatting.
I have been working on a program and I need it to unzip a zip file. I tried handling a zip file as a directory but that didn't work.It wouldn't hurt if I could compress files into a zip file to! But I need unzipping the file first. This is my code handling it as a directory:
Dim count As Integer = Directory.GetFiles(My.Application.Info.DirectoryPath & "Games" & game & "00.zip").Length MessageBox.Show(count)
It has an error saying it is not a valid directory name.
I know this idea of - if message boxes are used to display error messages inside a .dll and when the .dll is installed in a different computer (possibly a server machine), errors occurring inside that .dll will be shown in the server and not to the user. Since practically there will not be a person near the server to click 'OK' to the error message every time it occurs it will stuck the programs using the .dll.
So how to write exception handling to a .dll project?
I am trying to get a list of files using this line of Dim files() As String = IO.Directory.GetFiles("D:", "*.*", SearchOption.AllDirectories)But it errors out on folders that are inaccessible, like the RecycleBin folder & the program stops. So how do I get a list of files in all folders, while skipping the inaccessible one
With regard to RichText, obviously information is contained somehow with regard to the text colour, font, size as so on and as it supports more than the ASCII character set such as Unicode characters and so on.
Now I know that Microsoft Word .doc and .docx files contain such information.
My question: How to extract just the rich text information only and ignore all the formatting
information such as bold, underline, italic and so on. How can this be achieved with VB.Net
What I am thinking of here, is, imagine a CSV ( comma separated value ) file but in Rich Text Format.
In relation to this, does Notepad only support a limited character set, i.e. ASCII only?

I have some functions written in C that read & write large binary files (> 4 GB) using routines CreateFile, ReadFile, WriteFile & SetFilePointer, that use the HANDLE data type to access the file. Some others who are more familiar with Visual Basic would would like to be able to call my C routines to work with such large binary files. We particularly need SetFilePointer to jump around with the files.
example. i have 2 textboxes and if there empty it says "Incorrect Information", but how do i make it that like when a person enters something into the textbox1 it can be 3 values minimum.. like it could be eather 2 letters 1 number or what ever just more than 3 values (no special characters), and on the password.. 6 values minimum (no special characters).
I am trying to make a program in Visual Basic 2010 that should do the following: -Open file as binary -Start with position 57 and read the following characters until a 0 is found, print the whole name
Inside the binary file, all the files' names end with 0 (which should not be printed), example: B000000.dat0 eft.dat0 G000000000.b70
For the above examples, the names that should be printed are B000000.dat, eft.dat, G000000000.b7 respectively. The code I wrote is below. The problem is that i am not sure how to read the name until the 0 is found since the names are variable in length and so are the extensions(dat, b7). Also some names have 0 in them which makes things difficult.
Using gs As New FileStream(fileName, FileMode.Open) gs.Position = 57 Using gr As New BinaryReader(gs) For x As Int16 = 57 To 70 Dim textvar(x) As String textvar(x) = gr.ReadChar text3 = textvar(x) & (gr.ReadChar) Next End Using End Using
I have a favorites application which makes files corresponding with the favourites, but with the windows filesystem, I cannot create files with the characters: <> /\ : ? * ". This means that I cannot create favorites with HTTP: in them, which kind of ruins the point of having a favorites viewer. How I could convert the http: to another expression and save it, and then when the project loads make it into http: again. I have thought about using Regex to replace the expressions, but I do not know how to do that in a listbox.
Here is my code: Imports System.IO Public Class Form1 Dim info As IO.FileInfo Private Function MakeFave() <<<<<<<<<<< Code to convert the http: into the expression for the HTTP: (say http&&%) [Code] .....
