Favorites Application - Cannot Create Files With Characters

Apr 7, 2009

I have a favorites application which makes files corresponding with the favourites, but with the windows filesystem, I cannot create files with the characters: <> /\ : ? * ". This means that I cannot create favorites with HTTP: in them, which kind of ruins the point of having a favorites viewer. How I could convert the http: to another expression and save it, and then when the project loads make it into http: again. I have thought about using Regex to replace the expressions, but I do not know how to do that in a listbox.

Here is my code:
Imports System.IO
Public Class Form1
Dim info As IO.FileInfo
Private Function MakeFave()
<<<<<<<<<<< Code to convert the http: into the expression for the HTTP: (say http&&%)
[Code] .....

VS 2005 - Reader And Writer For Favorites In Browser Application

Oct 19, 2010

I'm making a browser and for the favorites I'm using a reader and writer to read and write new favorite to a .txt file. Now if I edit the text file manually and load up the browser, the favorites show up as they should but the problem comes in when I add the a new favourite and then reload the application. Once reloaded the favorites seem to copy what was originally in the file and then whatever I added last at the bottom.

Here is the
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
WebBrowser1.Navigate(TextBox1.Text)
ListBox1.Items.Add(TextBox1.Text)

Use Word To Create Files For Application?

Nov 8, 2010

I am in the process of writing a win forms desktop app in VB.net that employs user data in the form of rich text, stored internally as an object and then serialised to an XML file for persistent storage purposes.

To create the user data (the application's "document" it might be called), I have written a seperate app that tries to be a word processor and then saves the text in my XML format that can then be opened and used in the main app.

Is there a way I can use Word to do this? Perhaps by writing an add-in or template? Just to clarify, the format of the rich text would just be a table, I then need to save this in my XML format, or save the text as my object then serialize it to file.

Pure Text Files / Handle Special (german) Characters In .net Vs VB6 Old Files?

Jul 17, 2009

i have an old VB6 system that generates plain text files. When this old system writes "A" into the file, it writes (hex) "41". For an "ä" (a-umlaut, special gernam character), it writes (hex) "E4".

Now i have to process files like this in VB.Net. when i open such a file in the IDE, it displays correctly "ä" (But not always!). To see what i mean, please open a notepad and create a new file "ae.txt" with content: äöü. Now your file contains exactly 3 bytes: (hex) E4 F6 FC.

But when i write code like
Dim strTest As String
strTest = File.ReadAllText("ae.txt")
Debug.Print(InStr(strTest, "ä"))

i get 0 - so i cannot find back the "ä" - what do i need to do, to find it? And 2) for compatibility reasons, i have also to be able to create such files. How to do that? Seems the different encoding types do not work as i think.

Binary Files - Read Characters Until 0 Found

Sep 23, 2011

I am trying to make a program in Visual Basic 2010 that should do the following:
-Open file as binary
-Start with position 57 and read the following characters until a 0 is found, print the whole name

Inside the binary file, all the files' names end with 0 (which should not be printed), example:
B000000.dat0
eft.dat0
G000000000.b70

For the above examples, the names that should be printed are B000000.dat, eft.dat, G000000000.b7 respectively. The code I wrote is below. The problem is that i am not sure how to read the name until the 0 is found since the names are variable in length and so are the extensions(dat, b7). Also some names have 0 in them which makes things difficult.

Using gs As New FileStream(fileName, FileMode.Open)
gs.Position = 57
Using gr As New BinaryReader(gs)
For x As Int16 = 57 To 70
Dim textvar(x) As String
textvar(x) = gr.ReadChar
text3 = textvar(x) & (gr.ReadChar)
Next
End Using
End Using

VS 2008 : Working With Files With Illegal Characters In File Name?

Jul 3, 2009

save/create a file with a character such as ; or or * in the name then windows will tell you that you cant do that. However, this is obviously possible via some programming languages (im assuming VB.NET probably throws an exception if you try this).So here is my situation - my program works with some files that are produced by a third party program and these files get named whatever the subject of the email that each file relates to was. So if one of these emails had a subject of "Hello ;" then the file would be saved as that name by this third party program. The problem is when my program comes to rename this file or move it then it just throws an exception basically saying that the file doesnt exist, however it works perfectly fine with files that dont have these illegal characters in so it is definitely that thats the problem.

Special Characters - Multi-User TCP Chat Application?

Jan 8, 2010

Someone gave me a link to a Multi-User TCP Chat application once, but, there is a flaw in it, where it wont do special characters, such as Alt+1 will become a different character to the server than the one that was sent. Even I tried to see if the output was usable but it sees it as multiple chars, when it is only 1, and I can't find a link between what it sends and what the character is, so I can't just tell it based on whats sent what the char is, because I see no relation, I would have to type it out for each and every special character.
