View 5 RepliesI'm making a presentation program. It's a bit like PowerPoint, but less complicated and for a different purpose.
All files used in the presentation (like images, texts and sounds) should be put into a single 'file-package'. This package should later be opened by my program, which should be able to use the files from the package. (Just like PowerPoint creates a single file with all images and sounds included, which can be loaded in PowerPoint on a different computer.)
Actual compression for the file is not really needed. It could be sort of like a tar-file.
How do i make a program that can compress files, just like programs like winrar do? Every time i try via something as simple as text editor changing something, then changing it back, then it wont work anymore. Any suggestions on how i can make one of these kinds of compression programs?

But the same code doesn't work for 7 zip, i only manage to create the arhive, without password :

I want to have a backup feature which takes about 7 txt files and compresses/packs them into one file. Then if required at a later stage I can unpack all 7 files from the packed file. I do not need any compression as such just to make one file from 7, then 7 from from that one, if you understand what I mean. I have read there are some native libraries in .NET Framework 2.0 called DeflateStream and GZipStream. Can these be used?

Also, I'd like to know how to implement WinZIP's dlls to compress files as the zipfldr.dll does not achieve very high levels of compression and encryption.
View 4 RepliesHaving a slight permission problem with Win 7 I am guessing it will be the same on Vista but work fine on XP (yet to try)But my program is sitting in: C:Program FilesCompanyProgram And its trying to create new files alongside itself in the Program Files area but bombing out which I know is permissions. If I go there to create the file myself it comes up with a UAC prompt and when I hit allow it works fine but obv the program can't do that byiteslf so bombs out.Is there anyway I can over come that without the user having to grant admin rights to the program each time it starts or do I have to write data to another place?

I have a program I made in vb.net express 2008 that used java.utils.zip to compress my work files to a Zip archive that I ran occassionaly to have a backup. I worked fine, but with net framework 4 and vb.net 2010 it doesn't work. So I modified it to use sharpziplib and it works fine if all files on the filter list in the folder are closed, but if I have a file open in OpenOffice writer, my program can't access it and won't create the zip file. The file that usually stays open all the time is my TODO list, that is updated several times a day , so usually gets printed, and updated( adding or deleting entries), without closing it.

I am in the process of writing a win forms desktop app in VB.net that employs user data in the form of rich text, stored internally as an object and then serialised to an XML file for persistent storage purposes.
To create the user data (the application's "document" it might be called), I have written a seperate app that tries to be a word processor and then saves the text in my XML format that can then be opened and used in the main app.
Is there a way I can use Word to do this? Perhaps by writing an add-in or template? Just to clarify, the format of the rich text would just be a table, I then need to save this in my XML format, or save the text as my object then serialize it to file.
I want to create an application which acts like a file cabinet, where in i can store all my files viz. xls,doc,msg. So that i do not have to look for my files in hard drive, i can open an application and retrieve it from there.My application will be a standalone application whose data is stored on the location i mention in the application.Is it possible to build an application like this.

View 5 RepliesI have a favorites application which makes files corresponding with the favourites, but with the windows filesystem, I cannot create files with the characters: <> /\ : ? * ". This means that I cannot create favorites with HTTP: in them, which kind of ruins the point of having a favorites viewer. How I could convert the http: to another expression and save it, and then when the project loads make it into http: again. I have thought about using Regex to replace the expressions, but I do not know how to do that in a listbox.

how i would make an application that can create exe files.Like i make an app that has the options:

and then you click build, and it builds an exe with the options set in the original form as the settings for the new exe.
I am creating a form with the resources which I am creating a programming with languages. I have created three resources which the one that are ZH-CH (Chinese), el-GR (Greece) and en-US (English-United States). I have also built some texts in the resources so I have debugged the program. Everything seen to be is fine, but I find that some weird stuff in the project bin folder. I found that the program has created three folders (ZH-CH, el-GR and en-US) with the dll file in each folder (Project1.resources.dll), I have renamed each dll files name with each different name and I have moved them in the bin folder, so I have deleted three folders. I ran the program again and they have created the new same folders with the same name where it was.
I want to use the same dll files that I have renamed (like each of these: English.dll, Greek.dll and Chinese.dll) without placing them in the resources folder. Id find it so impossible to avoid the program by creating these new folders with the same dll files name without using the files that I have renamed them and placed in the project bin folder. do to find out where the information in VB.Net application that are making the program to create the folders with the same dll files name (project1.resources.dll)?
I'm using Visual Studio 2010 Express Edition - Visual Basic.I'm very new to VB but I would like to create a program / splash screen that displays a list of files (Word, Excel, Project) that are located on a CD. I'm not sure how to start other than starting out creating a new project.
Here is how I would like the program to work. The user inserts a CD-rom (containing the program and a folder with all the files) the program automatically starts up when the CD is inserted and it displays a list of all the files on the CD. The user can click any of the files to start the program that created it. Example, if we have an Excel file called "Work Schedule", the user could click it and it would open in Excel.
After I've created the project and have a form, I'm not sure what tools I need to use to display the list of files.I'm not sure how I set up the connection (path) between the program and the folder containing all files, especially as they will all eventually be located on the same CD.

I found one solution that , if change user rights manually then this problem solved.Follow these step to change your account settings.Control Panel-->User Accounts and Family Safety-->User Accounts-->Change User Account Control settings-->Never notify(Set tab to never notify).After this change need to restart system.Now can make all changes like windows XP into Windows 7.can also make changes into program files.
Its working fine, but need to make these changes manually in OS.but its not efficent solution. So if any one knows how can make these changes by coding that will nice.
I have seen that in universal usb installer the program asks for a file then has 7zip extract the contents of the iso, is there a way to do this in vb.net?

It would be wonderful if i could setup a custom menu programatically as well. I have seen some documentation on Imapi 2.0 but i have not been able to find too much suppoert for it. I have also found a few SDK's out there but most are over $1000 which just isnt in the budget.
1) Is there a library included in windows 7 that will allow me to do this.
