.net - Cannot Create Modify Text File Into Program Files Folder Of Windows 7?
Jul 27, 2011
I make an application and make setup file using VS setup project. This work fine and create default text files into Program Files Folder for winodw 7/vista .but can not modify these files or create any new files.
There are few text files need to create ,modify during application running ,but in windows 7/vista unable to create, modify files.I am using full default admin right for these OS. If iuse C: root path then application work fine or for win XP no problem.I think UAC restricting to perform these opeartion. But i do not know how to change these restriction using vb.net, whenever application start.
I found one solution that , if change user rights manually then this problem solved.Follow these step to change your account settings.Control Panel-->User Accounts and Family Safety-->User Accounts-->Change User Account Control settings-->Never notify(Set tab to never notify). After this change need to restart system. Now can make all changes like windows XP into Windows 7.can also make changes into program files.
Its working fine, but need to make these changes manually in OS.but its not efficent solution. So if any one knows how can make these changes by coding that will nice.

I am trying to retrieve file details from files in the Program Files folder. I receive an error while trying to retrieve file details.
Dim sFileName As String = ("%ProgramFiles%Windows DefenderMSASCui.exe") Dim Info As FileVersionInfo Info = FileVersionInfo.GetVersionInfo(sFileName) Msgbox(Info.ProductName.ToString())
I receive file not found error at 3rd line. But if I change the path from "%ProgramFiles%Windows DefenderMSASCui.exe" to "c:Program FilesWindows DefenderMSASCui.exe" it works fine.
What should I do if I want to retrieve file details from the path which includes a "%" character?

I have an issue with the Windows permission system. And every time it tries to do something that needs a windows permission (to be ran as administrator) it fails !
At the moment I was trying to implement an updater which should download a file from an ftp site but because copying a file into one of the program files folder requires a permission I am not able to do this.
I am developing an application that Monitors a specific folder for file changes such as modify deletion, update, etc. The only problem I have is , the application doesn't fire up File events.
I have files in a folder which i need to append and produce a single textfile.
1)I first select the folder using FolderBrowserDialog and write the path in the textbox. 2)By the click of a button I want to append all the files contained in that folder and write it in the same folder with the name of the textfile as new.txt

I have a folder containing different levels of subfolders. Each subfolder contains text files. I want to replace a particular text in a given file. Could anybody put up a demo code in VBA using FileSystemObject?
i have a project that requires me to make a unit converter. the units should be defined within the program. i have reached a point where i save the defined units in a text file for a simple example converting meters to kilometers where it gets divided by 1000 i made the program to save the a string in a text file to represent that as: meter,kilometer,0.001
which means it gets multiplied by 0.001 anyway the problem that i'm facing that when i want so save another units in the same file the previous units gets deleted. how to make the program update the text file that it adds the new defined units in the same file but before that it looks in the test file if the unit is already exists and if it does it will replace it with the new value
is it possible to read a string just before the second comer? foe example if the string in a file is: meter,kilometer,0.001 it will read it as: meter, kilometer and is it possible just to read the last value? 0.001
Is it possible to build a program through VB that creates a folder in program files folder and behaves like any other usual program? If not, though witch program can i make this?

i have created a program to view images in a picturebox, i have created two list box's one for folder names/image areas to group certaint images and the second listbox to list the number of pages contained in the image folder/area. when the user creates a new image area, he or she can name it whatever they want, when they do that i would like to create a folder in the c drive for instance with the same name as the image area, and i would want it to create a .txt file aswell to keep memory of what they have done, so when they come back to it the next day they can just carry on from where they left off.
Ok I know this question has been asked to death but I still have not seen a good answer. I have created an application in VS2010 using VB.NET. In my application I have an error log that is an XML file located in the Public gstLocalErrorLogLocation As String = Application.StartupPath & "ErrorLog"that gets written to in the event of an error so I can trouble shoot application easier. My application also downloads files from our FTP site and puts the files in Public gstLocalDownloadLocation As String = Application.StartupPath & "download"So I have files that get read and written to as well and created and deleted all in the Application.StartupPath which is either "c:Program Files(Application Directory)(Some Directory)(Some File)" or "c:Program Files (x86)(Application Directory)(Some Directory)(Some File)" depending on 32bit or 64bit Windows 7.
After creating the setup I install it on my test machine that have both Windows 7 32bit and 64bit.Everything in the application works great till I have to write to, delete or creat a file in those directories above. I know it is an access issue and the UAC. This will get installed on numerous systems so the options I have seen to change file or folder permission on the computers manually is not an option. What has to happen is after I install the application it just works like when you install it on XP. Some post have suggested that you us a user with administrator privilages or group which is all fine and dandy but the user I have used to test the application has all of that.
So what I am asking is how do you create an application with VS2010 in VB.NET that after creating a setup package and installing on Windows 7 will just work with out "Access to the path c:Program Files(Application Directory)(Some Directory)(Some File) is denied." If I have to install this on 100 Windows 7 computers it has to be a concreate no manually doing anything just install and work like when we installed on XP.
I have a program where a lot of the required information for it is stored in text files. I simply read this information into large arrays. However, I don't think it's necessary to load all the information each time. Rather, it would be more efficient if I could simply search through a list of items to find the one I need and then use the data from it, or to find a similar name and use it elsewhere.
Would I be right in using a database? And is database programming done in SQL? I have a book on it telling me to use the SQL Server (IIRC), so I shouldn't be doing it in the VB.NET Express GUI?
Here's an example of what I would do:
Hex = 03 00 => dex number 003 Search in file Pokemon Dex Numbers 003 returns Bulbasaur Check Bulbasaur base stats in the base stats file etc
So basically I'm reusing a lot of information. I think a database would be best and it would all be internal right? I'm getting complaints about access denied to a text file (since it's stored in the program directory in the program files).
So to cap up the few questions I have:
-Databases are done in SQL and not inside the GUI? -Databases would load internally? -I could search a database without having to load it into like an array or something?
i am working on an application called logonscreenchangerxp i made my program and when i run it on xp virtualmachine i get errors the program is made using vb 2008 and using .net framework 2.0 i am not able to get full permissions to modify boot.ini file and a regisrty value and to delete a file
i created a form with a combobox that lists out Assignments ( assignment 1, assignment 2, etc...)......what i need to do is let the user choose an assignment, then the program should look for the matching text file in a folder, ex: user picks assignment 1, and the program will read from assignment1.txt and display the result in a listbox. I have everything except the coding to match what the user chooses and the text file to streamread.
