Dec 3, 2011I am working on a program that will take in a string of length 7 containing either R,G or B for the colours. The program will then check that the string if 7 in length and if it contains any other characters than R, G or B then it will be invalid. I created this code but when I enter the right string length and characters it always gives me the error for not having the right string length.

Jun 17, 2009I'm using this code to return some string from a tcpclient but when the string comes back it has a leading " character in it. I'm trying to remove it but the Len() function is reading the number of bytes instead of the string itself. How can I alter this to give me the length of the string as I would normally use it and not of the array underlying the string itself?

Len() reports the number of bytes not the number of characters in the string.

Nov 2, 2011MVC 3. Vb.net. Part of my app generates PDF files using Itextsharp. Some strings are too long to go onto the background image correctly. So I basically need to split this string when its over 26 characters long and when it splits it cant split in the middle of a word. from there I will use newline to add the string to the right to the next line... I did start bulding the function that I will pass the string into test for length and then pass back the string after it finishes.

The only thing wrong with that is the 64 character limit. How can I determine the length of a string, remove all characters after the 61st character, then add three periods at the end of the new string? I've looked around and can't find any solution to removing all characters after the first X characters.

May 4, 2009I would like to format output to a property of a custom control I have made.For instance I have a literal control in my control and when populated I want to check if it is longer than 30 characters long, if so, then go to the next space (as to not cut the word off) after the 30th character and place a <br /> tag in to place the next 30 characters on the next line.So if there were 100 characters in a string, there would be 3 line breaks in the label.I have the looping worked out to get the label populated but cannot get how to dymaically create the array based on the string lenth property and index of method.

Feb 13, 2012I am using VB .Net to access the eBay API and store all completed orders in a database. This database is then fed into a proprietary shipping system, which can not handle an order number larger than 20 characters. eBay returns an order number like so 230407279314-680141236013 which is too long. The order number is always 12 numbers a hyphen and 12 more numbers. What I need to do, is turn this (the result can be alpha numerical) into a shorter, unique order key to store in my database alongside the true orderId (so that this can be referenced by the shipping software instead of the actual order number). The reason for the 20 character limit is the barcode algorithm used. Is there any way to achieve this in VB .Net 2010? This number can be anything unique, so long as it does not exist already (even a good uniqueid function would work, but I would have to query the database to make sure it isn't taken)

I am able to save user ID of length less than 20 Characters.But when I am trying to increase this value to 30 characters then I am getting the error.
"System.DirectoryServices.DirectoryServicesCOMException (0x8007001F): A device attached to the system is not functioning. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007001F)"
This error when I searched on net give me various links saying that:
(a)verify if the issue is caused by the length of sAMAccountName
(b)The document of SAM-Account-Name also indicates that the length of it should be less than 20 characters.

Jul 21, 2010If using the following in an if statement I get an error: If trg.Name.Substring(4, 6).ToUpper <> ("ABCDEF") Then I get the error: "Index and length must refer to a location within the string. Parameter name: length"
I assume this is because the string (trg.name) is too small for the 4, 6 substring. What would be the correct method of working around this problem? VB.net Studio 2008.
