View 5 RepliesI have a program that requires a string. The string is 20 characters long. The string also have to be split into 2 words the first word is 12 characters and the second is 8. If the strings is not 20 characters long I get an error. I wanted to know how can I get the program to start back over and let me enter another 2 more words if the string is not 20 characters long. At the moment after I get the string is not 20 characters long error it continues to read the rest of the program but I want it to stop after an error and let me start over from the beginning.
View 3 RepliesI have a task to resolve, it is regading extracting characters from a long string to the console, the extracted text shall be reformatted and saved into a CSV file. The string comes out of a database.
It looks something like: UNH+RAM6957+ORDERS:D:96A:UN:EGC103'BGM+38G::ZEW+REQEST6957+9'DTM+Z05:0:805'DTM+137:20100930154
The values are seperated by '.I can query the database and display the string on the console, but now I need to extract the Keyword 'ORDERS' for example, and lets say it's following 5 Characters. So the output should look like: ORDERS:D:96A then I need to extract the keyword 'BGM' and its following five characters so the output should look like: BGM+38G:After extracting all the keywords, the result should be comma seperated and look like:
ORDERS:D:96A,BGM+38G: it should be saved into a CSV file automatically.
I tried already:
'Lookup for containing KeyWords
Dim FoundPosition1 = p_EDI.Contains("ORDERS")
Console.WriteLine(FoundPosition1)
Which gives the starting position of the Keyword.I tried to trim the whole thing around the keyword "DTM". The EDI variable holds the entire string from the Database:
Dim FoundPosition2 = EDI
FoundPosition2 = Trim(Mid(EDI, InStr(EDI, "DTM")))
Console.WriteLine(FoundPosition2)
I want to create a random string (about 20 characters length). Is there any built-in class in .net that able to create random string?
View 9 RepliesI am using VB .Net to access the eBay API and store all completed orders in a database. This database is then fed into a proprietary shipping system, which can not handle an order number larger than 20 characters. eBay returns an order number like so 230407279314-680141236013 which is too long. The order number is always 12 numbers a hyphen and 12 more numbers. What I need to do, is turn this (the result can be alpha numerical) into a shorter, unique order key to store in my database alongside the true orderId (so that this can be referenced by the shipping software instead of the actual order number). The reason for the 20 character limit is the barcode algorithm used. Is there any way to achieve this in VB .Net 2010? This number can be anything unique, so long as it does not exist already (even a good uniqueid function would work, but I would have to query the database to make sure it isn't taken)
View 2 RepliesI have a string of characters, but I would like to have a string of hexdecimal characters where the hexadecimal characters are converted by turning the original characters into integers and then those integers into hexadecimal characters. How do I do that?
View 3 RepliesMy homework assignment is to create a project where a user enters a password that must be at least 3 characters long with at least 1 number and 1 alphabet character. After that the password has to be encrypted so that vowels become X, numbers Z, and it reverses. For example, a password of CS2301 would be ZZZZSC. There's supposed to be Loops to extract 1 number/letter at a time and search for them in the string to validate, and I don't know what to do. The form itself has a Text Box to enter a password and a label to display the new one, and a Go button.
This is what my code looks like so far.

Option Explicit On

Sample:
Input: Diewas
Output: saweiD
Apparently I need to find out about strings and will also need to use a loop.
Not sure if too many people know this, but the following line will cause an error:
GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_"
....if the length of GroupName is less than 3 characters. I always thought it would simply return whatever characters in GroupName, but no, it errors. I must be thinking of the old VB6 days. So, I now have to change the code to:
If (GroupName.Length > 2) Then
If (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then
Note that the two comparisons need to be on separate lines. If they are on the same line, such as:
If (GroupName.Length > 2) and (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then then the code will still fail as the length command is executed at the same time as the substring command- which will cause the error when the GroupName length is less than 3.Just thought that those of us not aware of this should be!

I want to create a program that checks the characters of the string "George123" . If a number is found in the string then a message box will pop up. Here is where the problem lies. I created a for loop that inspects each character of the string George123 and when it reaches the number 123 the message box pops up. The only problem with the message box is that it appears 3 times as there are three numbers in the string. So my question is how do i exit a for loop right after the first number is found in the string.
Code:
Dim onecharacter As Char
Dim Enter As String

I have a very long string. I need to parse this string so I can get information out of it. I know what each segment starts with and ends with. The length of the information will vary. I don't know what the easiest way of parsing this string.
Example data will be

So i will want to get everything from ST to AK1then AK1 to NM1 and so on and so on.
error message i get during compile programe:
string must be exactly one character long. Couldn't store <1 > in scopee column.
Expected type is char.

If the "PanelText" is too long (say 50 lines), it does not appear. Sometimes it shows an empty tooltip.

In vba, There is an address held by a long type which points to a null-terminated string, but I can't find a way to get the string from this address:
long str_address = ...
string str = ?
look at this code and see how i can speed it up? Its calling a sub to count commas in long string.Calling part 'Sort the incomming messages Dim count_Coma As Integer = CountCharacter(_InMessToAction, ","c)
The sub. This takes about 0.7 of a second to count 20 commas in string _InMessToAction. Was hoping to get it down to 0.1... if at all possible.

I want to convert a List (of Long) into a string array.
Reason: it's a list of database IDs and I want to make a comma delimited string to pass into a stored proc.I tried this:
Dim commaDelimitedList As String = String.Join(",", itemIDList.Cast(Of String)().ToArray)
but I'm clearly not using the Cast correctly since it throws an exception:
System.InvalidCastException: Unable to cast object of type 'System.Int64' to type 'System.String'..
Is there a way to get Cast working for this, or am I stuck with ConvertAll and a delegate function?

View 2 RepliesI'm trying to create an equivalent to #define from C++ as a shortcut to a ridiculously long DLL call.
TheThingBase.TheSubThing.FurtherSub.TheThingIActuallyNeed(string). This obviously is a pain to write out every time, and will clutter up my code.
In C++ I could put "#define _GET = TheThingBase.TheSubThing.FurtherSub.TheThingIActuallyNeed(string).I am not seeing this functionality or even a close resemblance anywhere.
Is there a easer way of coding in stead of wrighting long long paragraphs like this in one line [code]All of this is on one line and i got lots of info to put down.."The game will begin on your 16th birthday with your mother waking you up. View 2 RepliesI'm trying to make a hash calculator (For testing now)
I know that MD5 is a 1 way(Meaning that there is no decryption for it, yet)
now I was wondering if SHA-1 is a two way. Also, is there any other hashing method that are 2way?
reason is that I want to convert a long string (Lets say 550 chars) into something lower (From 550chars to something lower then 550chars)
I can use a Key, but every possibility will give me bigger length then the actual string.
