Parsing - Extract Characters From A Long String And Reformat The Output To CSV By Using Keywords With .net?
Nov 10, 2010
I have a task to resolve, it is regading extracting characters from a long string to the console, the extracted text shall be reformatted and saved into a CSV file. The string comes out of a database.
It looks something like: UNH+RAM6957+ORDERS:D:96A:UN:EGC103'BGM+38G::ZEW+REQEST6957+9'DTM+Z05:0:805'DTM+137:20100930154
The values are seperated by '.I can query the database and display the string on the console, but now I need to extract the Keyword 'ORDERS' for example, and lets say it's following 5 Characters. So the output should look like: ORDERS:D:96A then I need to extract the keyword 'BGM' and its following five characters so the output should look like: BGM+38G:After extracting all the keywords, the result should be comma seperated and look like:
ORDERS:D:96A,BGM+38G: it should be saved into a CSV file automatically.
I tried already:
'Lookup for containing KeyWords
Dim FoundPosition1 = p_EDI.Contains("ORDERS")
Console.WriteLine(FoundPosition1)
Which gives the starting position of the Keyword.I tried to trim the whole thing around the keyword "DTM". The EDI variable holds the entire string from the Database:
Dim FoundPosition2 = EDI
FoundPosition2 = Trim(Mid(EDI, InStr(EDI, "DTM")))
Console.WriteLine(FoundPosition2)

I have a very long string. I need to parse this string so I can get information out of it. I know what each segment starts with and ends with. The length of the information will vary. I don't know what the easiest way of parsing this string.
Example data will be
ST*997*232898~AK1*HC*8888*~NM1*2*TESTING........
So i will want to get everything from ST to AK1then AK1 to NM1 and so on and so on.

I've built a string using the Format method:
Format("[{0}{1} {3}:{4}]", var1.ToString, var2.ToString, var3.ToString, var4.ToString)
var1 to var4 are long type. Is there a way to easily extract the information back (other then the String.Split method) ?
Like: MagicMethod("[{0}{1} {3}:{4}]", formatedString, var1, var2, var3, var4)?

I have a program that requires a string. The string is 20 characters long. The string also have to be split into 2 words the first word is 12 characters and the second is 8. If the strings is not 20 characters long I get an error. I wanted to know how can I get the program to start back over and let me enter another 2 more words if the string is not 20 characters long. At the moment after I get the string is not 20 characters long error it continues to read the rest of the program but I want it to stop after an error and let me start over from the beginning.

I'm creating a vb.net winforms application that will take in user given strings, parse them, and print out labels with variable information. The given string will be used in all the labels, but the variable part of the string will change with each label.
My question is: is it better to parse the strings one time, then store those values in arrays, or to parse the string each time a label is printed? Which will perform better? Which is better practice? What is the proper way to test something like this?

I am trying to write a program in VB2008 Express. I originally wrote it in excel, but I want to add some features and make it a standalone executable. the program is ideal for a spreadsheet application though.
essentially, there are two input tables. each containing about 6 columns and maybe 10 rows. I assume that could be handled by arrays. the output would be a continuously updated table of output based on calculations using the data from the two input tables. the output table would be about 4 columns by up to 1000+ rows, and would need to be recalculated and displayed each time any data in the input tables has changed.
first, are arrays sufficient to handle this? would databases be more appropriate?
second, what's the best way to display a long list of output, that has a user defined length and is continually updated. it would also be nice to have the ability to click on an individual cell (or value) in the output and have more code executed.
is there a way to incorporate a spreadsheet like tool for this as a backend? I want to make sure i'm using the most efficient approach before i invest too much time.

I am using Streamreader to read a text file containing data such as the following:
IN;SC;PU;PU;SP1;LT;VS10
IN;SC;PU;PU;SP1;LT;VS10
PW5;PU4179,27448;PD4179,29951;PD3244,29951;PD3244,30286;PD5494,30286;PD5494,29951;PD4555,29951;PD4555,27448;PD4179,27448;
The final goal is to use the numbers next to the PU and PD characters to perform specific calculations.
Essentially, I think the code needs to do the following:
1. Read each block of characters ending in a ";"
2. If the block commences with anything other than PU or PD, discard it
3. Extract the numbers in such a way that calculations can be performed. The following is an example:
x y
PU4179,27448;
PD4179,29951;
[Code]....
Essentially, there will be hundreds of these rows and I will need to sum up the deltas so that a specific formula can be applied.
I have tried doing this a number of ways but each seem very inefficient (using text boxes to store/swap data and creating additinal text files are 2 methods I have tried) and so I'm looking for some direction.

I am attempting to make an application that can load in a large file that has some unique characters in it. A majority of the file is plain text, and ultimately I need to replace specified values with other values.The file is an InstallShield .ILG file - I am trying to have a small executable modify the "Feature" GUID entered in the file so that future installations/upgrades identify the new type of features it has. It's a fix for some software issues that would really expedite the solve without having someone un-install and re-install the package each time.
The problem is regardless of the methods I've tried to load the file, it doesn't bring over the data. It's a unique file that I do not want to modify/parse any data in other then those specific fields. Anytime I attempt to convert it to string I just get a few characters that are blocks. I've attempted all types of loading methods within VB but it continues to fail.
I've gotten this utility to modify everything from the config files to the proper DLLs it needs to load and the registry it needs to change. But it's this one piece that regardless of my attempts I can't find a way to load and modify the ILG file.

My homework assignment is to create a project where a user enters a password that must be at least 3 characters long with at least 1 number and 1 alphabet character. After that the password has to be encrypted so that vowels become X, numbers Z, and it reverses. For example, a password of CS2301 would be ZZZZSC. There's supposed to be Loops to extract 1 number/letter at a time and search for them in the string to validate, and I don't know what to do. The form itself has a Text Box to enter a password and a label to display the new one, and a Go button.
This is what my code looks like so far.
Option Strict On
Option Explicit On
Public Class Form1

I have the code to extract all links, but I am
href="http://www.blah.com/yadayada?tf=info"
Using regex; I want to grab everything between href=" and the quotation mark at the end .
This was a snipit I found that works for extracting in between 'href="' and </a>
HTML
Regex.Matches(data, "href=""(.*?)"".*?>(.*?)</a>")
I learn best by example, and I tried piecing it together by comparing the regex match above, to a URL in between hreft" and </a> - but I couldnt do it. Ive been working on this project for a while, and im getting tired.

I need to create a console program that allows you to enter a string, of which is then outputted in reverse.
Sample:
Input: Diewas
Output: saweiD
Apparently I need to find out about strings and will also need to use a loop.

so here is my scenario. I have two input files... both are plain text files. File1 has customer name, customer address and invoice number. File2 has customer name, customer address, invoice number AND a keyline. File1 will only contain some of the records in File2, and it will change daily. I need to be able to compare File1 against File2 and output one file (preferably an Excel spreadsheet) with the info from File1 and the keyline from File2, that matches the duplicated info. I know the basics to get it to work, but I'm not sure what would be the easiest way of doing this... File2 can have up to 100,000 records per day. I'd only need to run it once a day though.

I'm having VB write a batch file to send to a remote system via psexec.exe later on in the script. When it goes to execute the batch file, it fails due to these junk characters showing up in the beginning of the first line. I'm creating the file like so:My.Computer.FileSystem.WriteAllText("C:Program FilesBobBob's Programadd_user.bat", "net localgroup """ & Group & """ /add DOMAIN" & UserID, True) Where Group is the local group I'm adding to and UserID is the domain login for the user.

Not sure if too many people know this, but the following line will cause an error:
GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_"
....if the length of GroupName is less than 3 characters. I always thought it would simply return whatever characters in GroupName, but no, it errors. I must be thinking of the old VB6 days.So, I now have to change the code to:
If (GroupName.Length > 2) Then
If (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then
Note that the two comparisons need to be on separate lines. If they are on the same line, such as:
If (GroupName.Length > 2) and (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then then the code will still fail as the length command is executed at the same time as the substring command- which will cause the error when the GroupName length is less than 3.Just thought that those of us not aware of this should be!

How do I Extract all Characters in Unicode, UFT8,iso-8859-1 to 9 etc to a list or array In VB?I have a SQL Database of which contains values from 51 languages. I need to detect which ISO-8859-? Was used to encode the string value. For example Turkish Characters i.e. "Ö Ş ş ğ ü Ç" Once I have the correct ISO, I need to convert the Chars with-in the string to Unicode using only if the string value contains values that are not UFT7, and convert the string to HEX?The reason I need to detect the ISO etc is because we are sending SMS, of which jump from 160 characters to 70 if a special characters are used, i.e. "Ö Ş ş ğ ü Ç" Is there a simple way to extract the ISO-8859 Character Set to a Array etc, or is there a simple way to check if the character exists with a ISO-8859 data set?

The following output produces a string with no closing xml tag. m_rFlight.Layout = m_rFlight.Layout + "<G3Grid:Spots>" + Me.gvwSpots.LayoutToString() + "</G3Grid:Spots>"
This following code works correctly
m_rFlight.Layout = m_rFlight.Layout + "<G3Grid:Spots>" + Me.gvwSpots.LayoutToString()
m_rFlight.Layout = m_rFlight.Layout + "</G3Grid:Spots>" 'add closing tag
What's going on here, what's the reason the first example isnt working and the second is?
The gvwSpots.LayoutToString() function returns a string.
