Parsing A Text File In Order To Extract Data For Subsequent Calculations?

I am using Streamreader to read a text file containing data such as the following:
IN;SC;PU;PU;SP1;LT;VS10
IN;SC;PU;PU;SP1;LT;VS10
PW5;PU4179,27448;PD4179,29951;PD3244,29951;PD3244,30286;PD5494,30286;PD5494,29951;PD4555,29951;PD4555,27448;PD4179,27448;
The final goal is to use the numbers next to the PU and PD characters to perform specific calculations.
Essentially, I think the code needs to do the following:
1. Read each block of characters ending in a ";"
2. If the block commences with anything other than PU or PD, discard it
3. Extract the numbers in such a way that calculations can be performed. The following is an example:

Essentially, there will be hundreds of these rows and I will need to sum up the deltas so that a specific formula can be applied.
I have tried doing this a number of ways but each seem very inefficient (using text boxes to store/swap data and creating additinal text files are 2 methods I have tried) and so I'm looking for some direction.

Which is the most efficient and speedy data structure in order to carry out calculations on it?. I have seen, collections, arrays, list arrays, databases and more. I would prefer to write just straight forward code that will be effective and which I can still understand. What I would like to do initially is have the ability to add new draws to the end of the file, edit the individual files and delete lines if required.
File would then be reformatted to show the corrections made. Some kind of data entry window is envisioned. As far as number crunching goes, I would like to make counts of each number in each of the columns , calculating averages, times since last drawn and so on.
Without being too long winded, I would eventually like to find triple combinations and maybe use them as predictions. So there you have it. This way I won�t have to go off on the wrong path, on a data structure that may not be able, or be too slow for the tasks at hand.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a good tutorial for parsing data from a text file and then populating the data into multiple text boxes. I have a text file with information pertaining to my form. The text file consists of key identifiers for each piece of information needed and I was wondering how to programmatically fill in my form by parsing that data.

Im trying to parse a log file and display the data in a textbox.The log is forever changing so it will have to be some kind of a loop.I only want the new data to be added to the textbox after the application is running, not the contents already in the log file.

To simplify what I am trying to do, let's say I have a text file with only one line of data.
The data in this case is color info for one pixel:
Color [A=255, R=255, G=200, B=128]
What I am trying to do is read the text file and extract the hex color info and save them to their own variable.
So once the code has run, these should be the contents of the three variables.
RedData = 255
GreenData = 200
BlueData = 128
I have managed to get something to work but I know the code is terrible and is incredibly slow when I try to run through hundreds of lines in a text file.

I have found the above code from the net and it works fine as I would expect. I know this because I have added a put the String StoreFile into a text box and it worked. From what I understand about the code above is that we are reading the file test.txt until we reach the end of the file and we are storing it into a string.
What I would like to do is either:
1. Search the String StoreFile until I find the text of my choice, and then extract the characters around it. See attached txt file.
For example, if I wanted to search for MNAUSD in the attached txt file, I want to grab the values on the line (highlighted in blue) and make them available to my program and ignore everything else.
"MNAUSD",UNITED STATES,US $,M,1.558850,1,1.369850,1.113500,L
I know these files are comma delimited, but I would rather use a regular expressions if possible as I have other files that are not comma delimited, so it would be ideal if I have a regular expressions to handle the search and extract
OR
2. Search the File test.txt LINE BY LINE, until I reach my search text MNAUSD and then extract the same values as above.

i'm having trouble opening a text file to process and order the data in it. When i try to read the first line of characters an error message occurs saying: 'Variable words1 is used before it has been assigned a value.' I can load the file, but it's the parsing that's giving me headaches. e.g. "Phoned Jim and arranged for John to attend site" First I need to search for "Phoned" because the line always starts with that, and then I need to extract "Jim and arranged for John"

I've built a string using the Format method:

var1 to var4 are long type. Is there a way to easily extract the information back (other then the String.Split method) ?
Like: MagicMethod("[{0}{1} {3}:{4}]", formatedString, var1, var2, var3, var4)?

I'm toying with an idea that would require me to parse a text file that contains a SQL statement. (i.e. Select * From Customers) I would like to be able to programmatically via Visual Basic identify key words, table names, comment lines, etc.So, how do compilers handle such a task? How does a SQL database handle such a task? All of the parsing tools are for CSV files with some sort of consistent delimiter. I'm wondering if I need to read the file one character at a time and then do some sort of comparison.

I'm trying to parse a text file. First I plan on extrcating each line, then extracting each field by searching for a tasb.When I use InStr to search for a (return for end of line) or (for tab) I always get a zero. But if I put in a visable letter such as a I got a 5.also I tried /r, /n and all return a zero.The file looks as follows:

I'm using visual basic 2008 express to do some simple stuff. For this project, Im reading in one large text file.The top of each page has a header section that is always the same, except sometimes a dept# changes, signifying a new set of data.The first line always has the text "RunDate", so when I read that, I know that I'm at the top of the first page.After reading the first line, I'd like to immediately go to the sixth line and grab that dept# and store it.dept = left(trim(myline,7)(Its always 7 characters long) so I know what dept I'm working on.I'll then loop through and write each line to a new text file, until I hit the top of a new page.At that point I need to look at line 6 again. if the dept # is the same, I'll keep writing to the same file.Reading and re-writing from the text files is easy, I just loop through line by line, but I need to be able to jump down to the 6th line, and I don't know how to do that without reading each line to that point"

im parsing an .xml file to retrieve movie data.[code]i use a contains method in the query but it doesnt like [code] I thought when i use .contains method that it would select the title regardless of the :, but i yeild no results.ive check the .xml file and everything is fine.[code]my code works fine with all other titles that dont contain any special characters.

I have a task to resolve, it is regading extracting characters from a long string to the console, the extracted text shall be reformatted and saved into a CSV file. The string comes out of a database.
It looks something like: UNH+RAM6957+ORDERS:D:96A:UN:EGC103'BGM+38G::ZEW+REQEST6957+9'DTM+Z05:0:805'DTM+137:20100930154
The values are seperated by '.I can query the database and display the string on the console, but now I need to extract the Keyword 'ORDERS' for example, and lets say it's following 5 Characters. So the output should look like: ORDERS:D:96A then I need to extract the keyword 'BGM' and its following five characters so the output should look like: BGM+38G:After extracting all the keywords, the result should be comma seperated and look like:
ORDERS:D:96A,BGM+38G: it should be saved into a CSV file automatically.
I tried already:

Which gives the starting position of the Keyword.I tried to trim the whole thing around the keyword "DTM". The EDI variable holds the entire string from the Database:

I'll start off by saying I am using Visual Studio 2008 Standard. I am creating a program that will open installed programs using short code. For instance, if a user types in 'npp' then Notepad++ opens. I have it working just fine to respond to the predefined commands, but I would like to expand it so that the user can define their own settings simply by typing the program directory and the custom short code they want: Example: If I am an end user and would like to say define a short code for Windows Media Player, I would simply type the following: (Assuming Excel or likewise is used to open the csv file).

I have a piece of code in my application that is giving me a funny result. I am reading a text file and based on it's first word on the line I have a bunch of IF statements that then assign the value to a variable.
