How can I parse a text file and extract the data to excel file. The text file is in the following format
CustomerInformation
Tim Alen
596 George Town
[Code].....
I need to load and parse a text file and extract data between points on any given line. I can load the file, but it's the parsing that's giving me headaches. e.g. "Phoned Jim and arranged for John to attend site" First I need to search for "Phoned" because the line always starts with that, and then I need to extract "Jim and arranged for John"
[Code]....
I need to parse some text to extract the name/path of an image file inside an X file. The part of the file looks something like this:
TextureFilename {
"C:\\Users\\USER\\Documents\\Map\\Textures\\Grass01.dds";
}
[code].....
My application is supposed to parse a text file (relatively easy) and create an excel spreadsheet report. Should I write a stand alone VB.NET application that saves the excel file, or should I use VSTO? I am unsure if there are any differences in terms of ease of development, usability issues, API functions available, etc.Are there any other programming languages/interfaces/libraries that will allow me to rapidly develop an involved excel spreadsheet? I am talking about things like functions, graphs, etc.
View 3 RepliesTo simplify what I am trying to do, let's say I have a text file with only one line of data.
The data in this case is color info for one pixel:
Color [A=255, R=255, G=200, B=128]
What I am trying to do is read the text file and extract the hex color info and save them to their own variable.
So once the code has run, these should be the contents of the three variables.
RedData = 255
GreenData = 200
BlueData = 128
I have managed to get something to work but I know the code is terrible and is incredibly slow when I try to run through hundreds of lines in a text file.
Private Sub Button3_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button3.Click
Dim PixelData As String
[Code].....
Imports System.Globalization
Imports System.IO
Public Class Form1

I have found the above code from the net and it works fine as I would expect. I know this because I have added a put the String StoreFile into a text box and it worked. From what I understand about the code above is that we are reading the file test.txt until we reach the end of the file and we are storing it into a string.
What I would like to do is either:
1. Search the String StoreFile until I find the text of my choice, and then extract the characters around it. See attached txt file.
For example, if I wanted to search for MNAUSD in the attached txt file, I want to grab the values on the line (highlighted in blue) and make them available to my program and ignore everything else.
"MNAUSD",UNITED STATES,US $,M,1.558850,1,1.369850,1.113500,L
I know these files are comma delimited, but I would rather use a regular expressions if possible as I have other files that are not comma delimited, so it would be ideal if I have a regular expressions to handle the search and extract
OR
2. Search the File test.txt LINE BY LINE, until I reach my search text MNAUSD and then extract the same values as above.
I have a text file and I want to take the data from the text file and write each line into the excel file (into the same column). How do I accomplish this? I know how to read data from a text file, but I don't know how to insert the data to a excel file..

I am using Streamreader to read a text file containing data such as the following:
IN;SC;PU;PU;SP1;LT;VS10
IN;SC;PU;PU;SP1;LT;VS10
PW5;PU4179,27448;PD4179,29951;PD3244,29951;PD3244,30286;PD5494,30286;PD5494,29951;PD4555,29951;PD4555,27448;PD4179,27448;
The final goal is to use the numbers next to the PU and PD characters to perform specific calculations.
Essentially, I think the code needs to do the following:
1. Read each block of characters ending in a ";"
2. If the block commences with anything other than PU or PD, discard it
3. Extract the numbers in such a way that calculations can be performed. The following is an example:
x y
PU4179,27448;
PD4179,29951;
[Code]....
Essentially, there will be hundreds of these rows and I will need to sum up the deltas so that a specific formula can be applied.
I have tried doing this a number of ways but each seem very inefficient (using text boxes to store/swap data and creating additinal text files are 2 methods I have tried) and so I'm looking for some direction.
I want to reading in a excel file and extract the sCodenumber sDescription ans the sStatus and store them in a array : StatusComposeArray(5200) As MyCompose. After this I need this array for comparing outside this class. But as can you see the array is defined inside the sub: ReadingIn_ExcelFilesCompose [Code]

I've got an application that passes commands to a terminal window and saves all the output to a text file Here is one of the commands my application passes to the terminal
MyProcess.StandardInput.WriteLine("host " + device)
The output of which is
"HostA has address Y.Y.Y.Y"
this along with a whole bunch of other text is saved to a text file...my question is how do I find the sting "HostA has address Y.Y.Y.Y" in that text file and then extract the IP address and assign it as a string variable?
I need to parse a text looking for the string - [[Extract|xxxxxxx]] and extract the xxxxxxx characters.How would I do this?
View 2 RepliesI have a insanely large file that has a lot of customer data in XML format. The start of a customer and end are how I'll determine the starting and ending points of the customer data I need to extract. The is the number I'll be searching for. I'll input a regular text file with 12-byte document numbers into the file (Doc Number List.txt), search the massive XML file (example.xml) for those document numbers, find the data before and after the DOC_NUM tags, but within the CUSTOMER tags and extract it to a formated file. The formated file needs to have these tags, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>

View 4 RepliesI occasionally have to search a very large text file as a troubleshooting step. The file is continuous text (with spaces between much of the text) but almost everything is date/time stamped. The text is actually messages between two machines so I'd like to insert a line break after every message so that I can follow the protocol exchange. Thre are also a few key words that I'd like to again, separate with a line break.

View 1 RepliesI am using VB.NET 2005 (if that matters).I need to parse a text (log) file in which to process lines like:
Program Up at: Tue Jun 24 11:32:53.656 2008 - TerrificProgram.exe
<some lines here which I ignore>
0.00:24:16 - Emergency Stop!
<more lines to ignore>
Program Down at: Thu May 29 22:22:56.000 2008
where the 0.0:24:16 is the offset in TimeSpan format (d.hh:mm:ss) relative to the 'Program Up at" datetime.The 'Program Up at: <date/time>' line I successfully detect (in another function which works) and as a result a set a Boolean flag that I am in a valid <Up> - <Down> sequence and I also set a Start-up DateTime var to which to add the offsets later.
The task is to convert the TimeSpan at the beginning of the 'Emergency stop' line to a regular DateTime expression and to write the converted line to another log-file.Simple, isn't it?The function I use for the above purpose is:
Private Function IsTimeSpan(ByRef InputLine As String, ByVal ProgStart As Boolean, ByVal DTofProgStart As DateTime, ByRef NewDateTime As DateTime)
Dim iLine As String = InputLine
Dim Index As Integer = iLine.IndexOf(" ")
[code]....
What I am doing is I pass each line ('InputLine' parameter) from the original log-file to the function together with the 'in <up>-<down>' flag ('ProgStart' parameter'), the start ot program DateTime (in the 'DTofProgStart') and I want the NewDate to hold the real datetime of Emergency event occurence (not its offset).
What happens is that I successfully detect the lines of interest but the NewDateTime is not updated (though 'ts' is in the correct format and the assignment 'NewDateTime = DTofProgStart' correctly assigns the passed value).Another curious thing is that the line
InputLine.Replace(testStr, NewDateTime.ToString("MMM dd HH':'mm':'ss yyyy"))
does not change the original TimeSpan beginning of 'InputLine' with the regular DateTime (though not updated) in 'NewDateTime'.Why?
Example Data Link - Sorry, wouldnt format correctly when pasted.

I am reading in data from an excel file that is only viewed inside the program. This excel file is being populated by data from multiple PLCs (7) through DDE links via RS Linx Gateway. I would like this data to be written to two different excel files and specific sheets within those so that it can be viewed later on.
My program has a form that will allow the user to view the data live, meaning they look at the first excel file from the program so that they are not able to edit the DDE links or change the file in any way. The other excel files (there will be two, one for good parts, one for bad parts) have specific sheets for each part and each tester station. For example, if the part is a ABC part, and it is a good part, and it was tester on tester station 1 then it needs to be saved to the good parts excel file, in the ABC sheet and in the good tester station 1 sheet.
If part XYZ comes along and is a bad part (fails testing) then it needs to be saved to the bad parts file, the XYZ sheet and the bad tester station 1 sheet.I might have added more detail than is needed to solve the problem but I thought I would add it anyways to help you all understand my problem a little better.
I have to parse through a text file that is growing and currently is about 30MB, but it takes a long time for the stream reader to load it before It can loop through the lines. Is there a faster method other than the streamreader?
View 2 RepliesI'm running into a problem whenever I try to parse a text file by each line. I know I could use stream reader to read line by line but it is a lot easier to simply use split() and I would also like to know the reason why split() doesn't work.
For example, I created a file "test.txt" and filled it with the following text.
text1
text2
text3
then put the following code in the load event of the form (a button click would work the same).

I'm trying to use VB.NET to parse a very large plain text file (2 GB). It is a database and has a field delimiter of SOH and a record delimiter of STX. I want to separate the fields and records of the file.
I would normally read each line of a text file and then use the split function to separate out the fields. I can't use this approach as there isn't always a delimiter on every line.
Is there any way to read a file until STX is found (rather than one line at a time)?
