I have a String with 15 places that I would like to split into 3 pieces: (First 3 digits), (next 3 digits), (remaining 9 digits).
How in VB2008 can I do that? Everything I have read so far indicates seperating by a certain character (ie: "," or " ") but no mention of character place. Seems like a simple thing, but after 2 hours of searching I'm still coming up empty

My homework assignment is to create a project where a user enters a password that must be at least 3 characters long with at least 1 number and 1 alphabet character. After that the password has to be encrypted so that vowels become X, numbers Z, and it reverses. For example, a password of CS2301 would be ZZZZSC. There's supposed to be Loops to extract 1 number/letter at a time and search for them in the string to validate, and I don't know what to do. The form itself has a Text Box to enter a password and a label to display the new one, and a Go button.
This is what my code looks like so far.
Option Strict On
Option Explicit On
Public Class Form1

For each character of this string I want a new character out of the string and then remove the character from the list of characters that still maybe used for other characters. It may not get the same character, you could basically just call this encryption, but it's not what I am making. I don't want to waste my time doing this one hour while VB can do this for me in <1 second.

I am writing a hangman type game and I am displaying the word to the user in a label as all *'s, but I cannot figure out how to have just one of the *'s changed in the label to the correct letter when the user inputs the correct letter into the text box and clicks the check letter button.Everything else in the program works perfectly, except for this part.[code]When I use the .Replace it changes all of the *'s to the correct selected letter.

I've been working with the substring command and after coding up all the things I needed it to do, I saw a post on here where the "For Each" statement was used basically to do the same thing.Lets say we just want to take a string apart one character at a time and add each character to a label. Which would be more efficient?I made a cheap example to show ...
Code:
ABinary = "0110 1100 0001 1011"
For x = 0 To Len(ABinary) - 1

I have a very long string. I need to parse this string so I can get information out of it. I know what each segment starts with and ends with. The length of the information will vary. I don't know what the easiest way of parsing this string.
Example data will be
ST*997*232898~AK1*HC*8888*~NM1*2*TESTING........
So i will want to get everything from ST to AK1then AK1 to NM1 and so on and so on.

If the "PanelText" is too long (say 50 lines), it does not appear. Sometimes it shows an empty tooltip.

look at this code and see how i can speed it up? Its calling a sub to count commas in long string.Calling part 'Sort the incomming messages Dim count_Coma As Integer = CountCharacter(_InMessToAction, ","c)
The sub. This takes about 0.7 of a second to count 20 commas in string _InMessToAction. Was hoping to get it down to 0.1... if at all possible.

I want to convert a List (of Long) into a string array.
Reason: it's a list of database IDs and I want to make a comma delimited string to pass into a stored proc.I tried this:
Dim commaDelimitedList As String = String.Join(",", itemIDList.Cast(Of String)().ToArray)
but I'm clearly not using the Cast correctly since it throws an exception:
System.InvalidCastException: Unable to cast object of type 'System.Int64' to type 'System.String'..
Is there a way to get Cast working for this, or am I stuck with ConvertAll and a delegate function?

I'm trying to make a hash calculator (For testing now)
I know that MD5 is a 1 way(Meaning that there is no decryption for it, yet)
now I was wondering if SHA-1 is a two way. Also, is there any other hashing method that are 2way?
reason is that I want to convert a long string (Lets say 550 chars) into something lower (From 550chars to something lower then 550chars)
I can use a Key, but every possibility will give me bigger length then the actual string.

I am trying to update an Oracle Database record and i keep getting this error:
ORA-01704: string literal too long 5
I looked up that error and it seems that i have a limit of 4000 charters since i am using Oracle 10g. However, the prgblem is that its the same exact data i am putting back into that record so that is why i am unsure as to why its giving me that error for the same amount of data i took out of it.
Here is my update code:

Dim ra As Integer

I'm pulling records from a db table (sybase) where I have run into a problem with a long varchar field. Using the OLEdb class I convert the field into a string variable which works fine in most cases, but there are problem with a few records. Examining the field in the database it shows that the value is not null, but the length of the field is 0.(SELECT field, length(field) FROM table). When I try to convert this into a string the result is rubbish.strContent = objReader.Item(i). I can't figure out what's the problem here, so I have avoided the issue by doing a table update before I start the process of getting data (I set the field value to null if field.length = 0
