View 1 RepliesIf I needed to escape a double quote character within a string literal I'd use two consecutive double quotes as follows:
Dim name = "Chuck ""Iceman"" Liddell"
However, it doesn't seem like consecutive # works the same way. The compiler is expecting a compiler directive to follow the # character, even when its enclosed in double quotes. How can tell the compiler that I want a # character in my string?
EDIT: as a few of the answers below point out, # is not a reserved character. I closed my solution in Visual Studio and re-opened it and no longer got the compiler squiggles warning me.
this would be my string Panipat,Patna,Result should be Panipat,Patna,Panipat,Patna,Result should be Panipat,Patna Panipat,Result should be Panipat,Panipat,,Result should be Panipat How can i do it

I am writing registration page and using asp.net validators. I need a regex validator to match a special character anywhere within a word, so it will satisfy requirement which says that "ID must have at least one special character." Allowed characters are[code]...
Once again, I am a junior, and having problems with wrapping my head around this stuff at this moment..
In ancient time, we can specify all characters with chr(56)
For example, say the character is unprintable. We want to put it in a string. Just do
Dim a as string = chr (56)
Now we have UTF8 or unicode (or whatever encoding).[code]...

I have the above declarations in my project. On a Vista machine the compiled code looks good, on a XP machine I get a character like this [] instead. I copied the code from the web, I'm not even sure how it was typed to begin with.
I do know that is views correctly in my modules in Visual Studio and in notepad etc. What can I do on my XP machine to make these special characters appear?
I want to user to enter only numbers and characters in textbox i.e no special charaters.I don't want to use key press event of textbox.As i need same validation in gridview.
So i want to validate whole string.
How can I generate a 7-digit random number and special character string in a textbox on a button click event, in VB.Net?
View 2 RepliesbuildLetter.Append("</head>").AppendLine();
buildLetter.Append("").AppendLine();
buildLetter.Append("<style type="text/css">").AppendLine();
Assume the above contents resides in a file. I want to write a snippet that removes any line which has empty string "" and put escape character before the middle quotations. The final output would be:
buildLetter.Append("</head>").AppendLine();
buildLetter.Append("<style type="text/css">").AppendLine();
The outer " .... " is not considered special chars. The special chars may be single quotation or double quotation. I could run it via find and replace feature of Visual Studio. However, in my case I want it to be written in c# or VB.NET
I need to convert this string to the proper form in my vb,net code

How do I escape form data in VB.net? I have various lines like this[code]...
View 6 RepliesI need to convert a string array into a very long string with following requirement:
can not using any character escaping can not using XML can not using single character as separator (e.g. comma or space as separator)
While searching on how to escape a single quote in String.Format, I found the answer at SO: Escaping single quote in String.Format(). It seems to be different for VB though. I tested it, and indeed C# needs
string s = DateTime.Now.ToString("MMM d \'yy 'at' H:mmm");
while VB needs
Dim s As String = Now.ToString("MMM d 'yy 'at' H:mmm")
Why does C# need a double backslash, and VB a single backslash? This might be a bit of a silly question to C# users, but while I can read C#, I'm not used to writing it.
The data was being read from a Gridview which had the html encoding. The solution was the following...
Dim Sht_Text As String = HttpUtility.HtmlDecode(row.Cells.Item(0).Text)
I am trying to prevent from having to escape apostrophes and other special characters in my string variables by using a parameterized query with an OleDbConnection. I have all of the parameters in the same order, the insert is working, it just does not maintain the characters. I keep getting those pesky html codes. I am trying to insert into an Access db from a web pages. As I mentioned, its working, just not the special characters.
Here's the code:
Dim pConn As New OleDb.OleDbConnection pConn = New OleDbConnection(cb.ConnectionString)
Dim SqlString As String = "INSERT INTO Strings (Mlt_String_ID, Lng_ID, Strg_Name, Sht_Text, Lng_Text, Alt_Text) Values (?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?)"
[code]....
jp and en records already existed, the insert of fr record pushes the html codes for the small circle which represents the degree symbol. Happens for all other special characters as well.
How do I write an expression to calculate all characters of each row by my own defined value to each character = all the A and B and C and etc. will be as 2 and all I and J and whatever ... will be 1 so I need an end result of the total.

For each character of this string I want a new character out of the string and then remove the character from the list of characters that still maybe used for other characters. It may not get the same character, you could basically just call this encryption, but it's not what I am making. I don't want to waste my time doing this one hour while VB can do this for me in <1 second.
I am writing a hangman type game and I am displaying the word to the user in a label as all *'s, but I cannot figure out how to have just one of the *'s changed in the label to the correct letter when the user inputs the correct letter into the text box and clicks the check letter button.Everything else in the program works perfectly, except for this part.[code]When I use the .Replace it changes all of the *'s to the correct selected letter.
View 2 RepliesI am writing a small app that is retrieving data from a device connected to a virtual com-port. I connect without problems to the device using the settings 9600-8-N-1.
I need to send the command <esc>MS , the device then sends back the data to a computer. I have tried this using Hyperterminal with success. I also did this with Excel and VBA. I used the MSComm32 Active X control:
MSComm1.Output = Chr$(27) + "M" + "S" + Chr$(13)
Msgbox(MSComm1.Input)
This made the data from the device pop up in a messagebox. I am writing a winforms app in vb.net, using VS2005. I have a form, on which I have a Placed a SerialPort control, named sp. My sample code is as follows:
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal
sender As System.Object,
ByVal e
[CODE]...
This returns the error message "Error: expecting a command". I have done som tests in HyperTerminal, and have concluded with:
-If I dont send <esc>, I get error "Expecting a command"
-If I send wrong command (ie MD instead of MS) i get error "Bad command"
Based on this, I suspect that I don't pass the escape character correctly to my device. So I wonder how to do this?
the coding is to 'Get input string and put its character into List, and replace the character with other.'but having problem putting each character into List and also replacing it,[code]

I've been working with the substring command and after coding up all the things I needed it to do, I saw a post on here where the "For Each" statement was used basically to do the same thing.Lets say we just want to take a string apart one character at a time and add each character to a label. I've got a program that in a nutshell reads values from a SQL database and writes them to a tab-delimited text file.The issue is that some of the values in the database have special characters (TM, dash, ellipsis, etc.) When written to the text file, the formatting is lost and they come across as junk "â„¢ or â€" etc"
When the value is viewed in the immediate window, before it is written to the txt file, everything looks fine. My guess is that this is an issue of encoding. But, I'm not real sure how to proceed, where to look, or what to look for.Is this ASCII or UTF-8? If it's one of those how do I correct it before it's written to the text file.Here's how I build the text file (where feedStr is a StringBuilder)
objReader = New StreamWriter(filePath)
objReader.Write(feedStr)
objReader.Close()
I am trying to replace an & in the name of a service in an xml document.
The & is causing an error. Is there anyway i can write some piece of code which will escape "&" as " & a m p ;"?

Function FieldValue(Of T)(row As DataRow,fieldName As String) As T
Return If(row.IsNull(fieldName),Nothing,CType(row(fieldName),T))
End Function
In the special case where the field value is null and T is String, I want to return String.Empty instead of Nothing.
