Converting A Database Field (long Varchar) With No Length To String?
Jun 26, 2009
I'm pulling records from a db table (sybase) where I have run into a problem with a long varchar field. Using the OLEdb class I convert the field into a string variable which works fine in most cases, but there are problem with a few records. Examining the field in the database it shows that the value is not null, but the length of the field is 0.(SELECT field, length(field) FROM table). When I try to convert this into a string the result is rubbish.strContent = objReader.Item(i). I can't figure out what's the problem here, so I have avoided the issue by doing a table update before I start the process of getting data (I set the field value to null if field.length = 0
how do i search a varchar field in a sql database and get rid of the char unless it is an number 0 thru 9 and then add that number to the monthly calendar todays date to determine a due date?
I'm converting some php code that tries to get a string to a length that is divisible by a certain number, say 10. To do so it appends "" to the string to make up for the difference. In other words, it does something like:
dim difference as integer = 10 - (str.Length Mod 10) for i as integer = 1 to difference str += "" next
But the problem for me is that "", which is the ascii code for the null character, is two strings and I don't believe that when VB loops over resultant string it will view that as one character. what could I append the string with to retain the expected behavior?
A string can contain from 0 to approximately 2 billion (2 ^ 31) Unicode characters. Does this mean the length field for the string is a 4 byte unsigned binary field, or is it a 4 byte signed binary ?
I am using VB .Net to access the eBay API and store all completed orders in a database. This database is then fed into a proprietary shipping system, which can not handle an order number larger than 20 characters. eBay returns an order number like so 230407279314-680141236013 which is too long. The order number is always 12 numbers a hyphen and 12 more numbers. What I need to do, is turn this (the result can be alpha numerical) into a shorter, unique order key to store in my database alongside the true orderId (so that this can be referenced by the shipping software instead of the actual order number). The reason for the 20 character limit is the barcode algorithm used. Is there any way to achieve this in VB .Net 2010? This number can be anything unique, so long as it does not exist already (even a good uniqueid function would work, but I would have to query the database to make sure it isn't taken)
I've got an unusual error regarding converting a varchar to numeric. I have code which goes through and adds the data to the database. When the code attempts to add the new data to the database, an error message appears highlighting the following line of code: check = cmdCDQAssets.ExecuteReader.RecordsAffected
I am working with SQL and Vb.net. When I run the following function (shown below) an error is highlighted "Error converting varchar to numeric". Whats wrong with the coding that triggers the error..
Dim query As String Dim cmd As New SqlCommand Dim irow As Integer
Error converting data type varchar to datetime.rtfI am trying to learn ASP.NET using ASP.NET 1.1 with SQL Server 2000 for the database. I have created a Stored Procedure in SQL Server 2000 and the procedure to execute the Stored Procedure is in ASP.NET 1.1. The problem is that when I try to save a record, the date field returns the above error. I have ried to use the several solutions on the web without getting one to solve the problem.I am attaching the Stored Procedure as well as the ASP.NET code for some advice. I am also attached a word document containing the two procedures.
When I try to close my form it gives me the following error; Error converting data type varchar to numeric. I have only one field which is numeric - ProjectID, and when I close this form sometimes this txtProjectID is empty and this calls the error. But if there is a number in the txtProjectID it closes fine.
I am getting the error Error converting data type varchar to numeri when trying to save some of the information that is entered in a textbox to my sql server 2005 database. HEre is the code for my insert statement.
'declare your variables Dim FirstName, LastName, Comments, MRN Dim sConnString, connection, sSQL [code]......
Dim query as String = "Select * from openquery (devbook, 'SELECT wb.arrival_time FROM web_bookings wb ')"All I need is to convert my arrival_time into a datetime field in the query
I am developing a Windows application for restoring specific databases from our Production platform to "field" tablets by using backups that are taken daily to disk. To preclude "orphaned users" on the tablets, I want to extract the "user name", "password" (hashed) and "sid".I am calling the MS Stored Procedure "revlogin" that produces screen text to copy and paste into a query to recreate those users on another SQL server instance.
IF (@denylogin = 1) BEGIN -- login is denied access SET @tmpstr = @tmpstr + '; DENY CONNECT SQL TO ' + QUOTENAME( @name )
I am trying to create stored procedure that gone return varchar value, and that value I need to display in textbox. This is the code for stored procedure:
Create PROCEDURE Status @id_doc int, @Name varchar(50) OUTPUT AS select @Name =items.name from Doc,Items where @id_doc=IDN and doc.IDN=Items.ID return @Name
This is the code in vb.net where i need to display returned value from procedure in textbox:
Public Sub Current() Dim dtc As New Data.DataTable Dim dr As SqlClient.SqlDataReader
[code]....
When I try to execute this code I get this message in exception:
"Conversion failed when converting the varchar value 'Blue color' to data type int."
I have problem insert records from my vb application to my access .mdb dataabse with all columns set as not allow zero length string and when I insert a records in which one of the column is null value it show allow zero length string error any idea how to create a code in visual basic in which allow zero length without change the configuration of the database?
For example my record have job_no name station 1 des 2 albert so I need to pass job number 1 to my access database but came out with error zero length string off course my access database is set no all to do so but I have my reason is that any sample code to force to accept blank strings?
End WhileI am trying to read from the ": " to the end of the line. I keep getting this error: Index and length must refer to a location within the string. Parameter name: length
Edit So the solution I posted from Jenner at VBforums was, obviously, in VB, and I used an online converter to port it to C#. Something was lost in translations, and that's why it was 10 miles off. I'm guessing I am just misunderstanding what the algorithms at the Proj.Net discussion boards are for and that's why they weren't doing what I wanted them to.
I'm developing a custom control for numeric input that does some basic value range checking and have run into an issue when I set my property ValueMin equal to Long.MinValue. The IDE generates the following line in form1.designer.vb file that subsequently is flagged as generating an overflow.
It appears that the CType function does not recognize the minimum Long value when the value is typed into the function, but works fine if it is passed Long.MinValue or a string with the value. It works fine for a typed in value equal to (Long.MinValue + 1). This problem only occurs with the Long (Int64) type.
I'm trying to insert a string that contains a comma into a varchar in vb.net. How do I make the insert statement I'm building understand that I want "X,Y" to be in the varchar and not X in the varchar and Y in the next column?
I am using an INSERT INTO statement and one of my database variables is a varchar(51). Can a string be directly stored as a varchar or do I need to convert this to something else beforehand?
If using the following in an if statement I get an error: If trg.Name.Substring(4, 6).ToUpper <> ("ABCDEF") Then I get the error: "Index and length must refer to a location within the string. Parameter name: length"
I assume this is because the string (trg.name) is too small for the 4, 6 substring. What would be the correct method of working around this problem? VB.net Studio 2008.
I'm having a problem converting a string to a datetime format. the string is depicting an hour, for example 08:00, but in the mysql database it stores that as 2008/00/00 00:00 any idea how to solve this? [Code]
