Make Gridview Checkbox Field Update Boolean Field In Database?

Feb 7, 2011

There are lots of questions about this but I've not been able to solve my problem using the answers to any of them (after many, many attempts..)

I'm working in vb.net creating an asp.net web application. I have an SqlDataSource and a GridView on my page.

I want to change the DoNotMail boolean value represented by a Gridview checkbox and automatically update in the database if the checkbox is checked from 0 (False, Will Mail) to 1 (True, Won't Mail) here is the code I used.
...

is it possible to do a two way sync on the entire gridview when the user hits a button so you don't have to do an update every time a row is changed? because the user might check the box and then check another box then uncheck a box and it would be a lot of updates...

Format SQL Datetime Field As String

May 13, 2011

In my VB project I am returning an SQL datetime field to a date variable mdtCreated = CType(oReader("dtCreated"), Date) In an example it returns mdtCreated as #5/13/2011 2:59:43 PM# which is correct. Later on I want to show this as a string to dd/mm/yyyy format. I have tried mdtCreated.ToString("dd/mm/yyyy hh:mm:ss") But that returns "13/59/2011 02:59:43". I want it to return "13/05/2011 14:59:43" How can I achieve this?

Insert A Datetime Field Into The SQL Server Database?

Aug 12, 2011

I am not sure if this should be in the SQL or vb.net section.But, Basically I have a vb.net application from where I insert a datetime field into the SQL Server Database. Now for some reason the SQL server field(which is datetime) will not display AM/PM, I have referred this link where my code looks like this:

Dim dateToDisplay As DateTime = DateTime.Now dsNewRow.Item("date_created") = dateToDisplay.ToString("MM.dd.yyyy hh:mm:ss tt")

I tried stepping into the code by debugging and it seems to be inserting the PM but is not displayed in the table QuotedateToDisplay#8/12/2011 6:01:06 PM#Date

Sql Server - Set A DateTime Database Field To "Now"

Dec 20, 2010

In VB.net code, I create requests with SQL parameters. It I set a DateTime parameter to the value DateTime.Now, what will my request look like ?

UPDATE table SET date = "2010/12/20 10:25:00";

or

UPDATE table SET date = GEtDATE();

In the first case I'm sure that every record will be set to the exact same time. In the second case it depends on how the DBMS processes the request. Which leads me to the second question : does SQL Server set the same date and time when updating a large table with NOW() ?

EDIT : replaced NOW() (which doesn't exist in SQl Server) by GETDATE().

Sql - Make Gridview Checkbox Update Boolean Field In Database?

Nov 21, 2010

<asp:SqlDataSource ID="msgUnread" runat="server"
ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:edinsec %>"
....

As you can see I was playing with WithEvents but that didn't seem to help. In the above code all I was trying to get was some kind of reaction to the clicking of a checkbox - but nothing happens (no errors, either).

Converting A Database Field (long Varchar) With No Length To String?

Jun 26, 2009

I'm pulling records from a db table (sybase) where I have run into a problem with a long varchar field. Using the OLEdb class I convert the field into a string variable which works fine in most cases, but there are problem with a few records. Examining the field in the database it shows that the value is not null, but the length of the field is 0.(SELECT field, length(field) FROM table). When I try to convert this into a string the result is rubbish.strContent = objReader.Item(i). I can't figure out what's the problem here, so I have avoided the issue by doing a table update before I start the process of getting data (I set the field value to null if field.length = 0

Format A Datetime Field To Just Show The Date?

Jun 22, 2010

I'm trying to format a datetime field to just show the date. The datetime is bound to an asp:label and for the Text attribute I have tried the following....

Text= String.Format("{0:D}", '<%# Bind("CReviewDate") %>')
and
Text= String.Format("{0:D}", <%# Bind("CReviewDate") %>)
....

In all cases I get a green wavy line under the equation and the tip help says "Validation (ASP.Net): If this attribute value is enclosed in quotation marks, the quotation marks must match. String.Format("{0:D}", DateTime.Now) is the syntax that I have been told should work.

Transferring Data From One Field In A Table In A Database To Another Field In A Different Table But Same Database In .NET?

Jul 22, 2010

I am creating a database in VB.NET for a movie rental place. I currently have three forms;

Member Information
DVD Information
Borrow DVDs

What I would like to do is when I am viewing a member's details, if I click a button 'Borrow DVD for Member', the member's ID number transfers over to the Borrow DVDs table in the Member ID which also would hold some information from the DVD Information table, but I'm sure if i can figure out how to do this firstly, I will be able to apply the same rule and work it out myself.I have been trying to use a query statement like;

INSERT INTO [Borrow DVDs].[Member ID] [IN goodstuffvideos.mdb]
SELECT [Member Information].[Member ID]
FROM [Member Information]

but that has been coming up with error codes and completely not working.

Borrow DVDs table fields are: Borrow ID, Member ID, DVD ID Number, Hiring Fee, Borrowing Limit?

DVD Information table fields are: DVD ID Number, Title, Rating, Hiring Fee, Borrowing Limit Member?

Information table fields are: Member ID, Family Name, Given Name, Address, Town/Suburb, Postcode?

The error coming up is; Error in INSERT statement. Unable to parse query text.And under that it says The query cannot be represented graphically in the Diagram and Criteria Pane.

Add New Row In Database, Get -1 For ID Field

Aug 6, 2009

I'm trying to make an appointment scheduler here. The table has an AppID column which just increments 1 every time a new appointment is added. That works fine. It also has an ID column that gets a unique doctor ID assigned to it so the program knows which doctor has which patient.

Now, when I try to add a new row, no matter what I try, the ID field gets a -1. I've tried assigning it the doctor's ID that I'm currently browsing as well as hard coding it to be a "3" and it still shows as -1. So this means that while it does save and update the new row, it adds that -1 in the ID column and thus the program can't tell which doctor has it so it won't show in my program. I don't know if this is because I've tried so many data sets that it's getting them confused or what, but here is the code that I am using to try to save this:

Asp.net - Getting Table Field Names As A String?

Oct 28, 2011

I'm trying to get the list of field names for a given table, to turn them into a string which I can to post back as a variable to another function.I've Googled loads of stuff regarding GetSchemaTable but all I seem to be able to output are field parameters, but not the actual value of these parameters (ie ColumnName, which is the one I actually want!)

Found this page; What is the SQL command to return the field names of a table?But all the queries on there give me an error "You do not have access to Table 'Columns'"I feel sure this is pretty simple, can someone give me a little function that will simply give me fieldNames = "fieldName1, fieldName2, etc"I am using a MySQL server and ODBC connections ASP.NET using VB.
