View 2 RepliesI have a DataGridView with one column, I set for that column
DefaultcelStyle->Wrapmode=True
Modify data a with a long string, I call also
vb.net
DataGridView1.AutoResizeRows()
DataGridView1.Refresh()
But the DataGridView doesn't refresh wrap,il looks like this : I change manually current selected row moving to another record and now the refresh is done :
I'm just wondering if it's possible to display a string in a integer column in a DataGridView? The reason I'm asking is that I have a column wich displays the place for each runner (it's a sports application). And if the runner is disqualified, it will display "DSQ" instead of the place.
Now, if I want to sort by clicking the column header, there's a problem if there are more than 10 runners. If there are like 12 runners, the sorting will be like this:

I am using a list<of T> as a data source for a datagridview and would like to handle the draw event of the datagridview to evaluate the string length of the column cell. If larger than a particular number then I would just do something like
cell.value = string.substring(0,(whatever number I need it to be)).
Running into a situation when user searches for orders of customer for past 4 years. As the DB query takes a long time, I want to show a pop up box just stating 'please wait. quering for results'. so when they start their search I want to show the message box until the results are obtainned and at that point I want to close the message box.My current way, I know is incorrect as the pop up box locks up and states (not responding).Would using a background worker be an over kill, or should I go with a progress bar?
View 1 RepliesI am trying to write a program in VB2008 Express. I originally wrote it in excel, but I want to add some features and make it a standalone executable. the program is ideal for a spreadsheet application though.
essentially, there are two input tables. each containing about 6 columns and maybe 10 rows. I assume that could be handled by arrays. the output would be a continuously updated table of output based on calculations using the data from the two input tables. the output table would be about 4 columns by up to 1000+ rows, and would need to be recalculated and displayed each time any data in the input tables has changed.
first, are arrays sufficient to handle this? would databases be more appropriate?
second, what's the best way to display a long list of output, that has a user defined length and is continually updated. it would also be nice to have the ability to click on an individual cell (or value) in the output and have more code executed.
is there a way to incorporate a spreadsheet like tool for this as a backend? I want to make sure i'm using the most efficient approach before i invest too much time.
I have the following in my little program:A form containing a button and a combo box where each item is a "year" ex. 2009,2010,2011...
When the user selects an item from the combo box, and clicks a button, an excel spreadsheet is displayed in a datagrid.
- Depending on the item selected, a different file is opened.
Now, my problem is as follows. Every time the user press the button, it takes like 50 seconds to open the file and display it in the datagrid.
- The file range is from A1 to J393 (a lot of cells)
The procedure reads every cell from A1 to J393 and puts it in a multidimensional array. Therefore, I would like to know if there is a way to speed up this process.Another thing, lets say I selected year=2009 and press the button.I wait 50 seconds approx.Displays the spreadsheet (corresponding to the year 2009) on the datagrid.
Then
I select year=2010 and press the button.
Wait another 50 seconds approx.
Displays the spreadsheet (corresponding to the year 2010) on the datagrid.
i have a datagridview which i populate from a SQL database. one of the columns is of a Ntext type. i would like to enlarge the cell on focus so the user would be able to read what's in it without entering edit mode.
View 1 RepliesI have a very long string. I need to parse this string so I can get information out of it. I know what each segment starts with and ends with. The length of the information will vary. I don't know what the easiest way of parsing this string.
Example data will be
ST*997*232898~AK1*HC*8888*~NM1*2*TESTING........
So i will want to get everything from ST to AK1then AK1 to NM1 and so on and so on.
error message i get during compile programe:
string must be exactly one character long. Couldn't store <1 > in scopee column.
Expected type is char.

I am working in VB.Net 2010 framework 2.0.I am setting a big string to tooltip object. In this case tooltip is not appearing. If the string is short (say of 10 lines), tooptip is appearing properly.The following is the code:[code]....
If the "PanelText" is too long (say 50 lines), it does not appear. Sometimes it shows an empty tooltip.

I have a client application that connects to a WCF service, i get the file size from the server as a long value then i convert it at the client to a string so it appears like ex:52.21 MB the application gets too many files sizes every time user changes the directory pathso the question is :should i convert the values to a string format from WCF service app then return it to the client as a string format or should i just return the size as a long value and let the client to convert it to a string format in other way which value take more bytes in the memory:

View 6 RepliesIn vba, There is an address held by a long type which points to a null-terminated string, but I can't find a way to get the string from this address:
long str_address = ...
string str = ?
look at this code and see how i can speed it up? Its calling a sub to count commas in long string.Calling part 'Sort the incomming messages Dim count_Coma As Integer = CountCharacter(_InMessToAction, ","c)
The sub. This takes about 0.7 of a second to count 20 commas in string _InMessToAction. Was hoping to get it down to 0.1... if at all possible.

I want to convert a List (of Long) into a string array.
Reason: it's a list of database IDs and I want to make a comma delimited string to pass into a stored proc.I tried this:
Dim commaDelimitedList As String = String.Join(",", itemIDList.Cast(Of String)().ToArray)
but I'm clearly not using the Cast correctly since it throws an exception:
System.InvalidCastException: Unable to cast object of type 'System.Int64' to type 'System.String'..
Is there a way to get Cast working for this, or am I stuck with ConvertAll and a delegate function?
Ive been searching the Stackoverflow but couldnt find the exact thread that my problem is this, i want to be able to find and take out any occurances of 8 digits wihtin a string.
Dim SetOfMatches As MatchCollection
Dim MyRegex As New Regex("A^d{8}$A")
Dim TestString As String = "testing 12345678 testing"
myMatches = myRegex.Matches(TestString)
For each Row as Match in myMatches
console.writeline(row.value)
Next
this doesnt not generate any hits. but i want to find the 8 digit occurance in the middle of the string.
I am very basic in RegEx.
I am trying to split a long string of data into an array:

Ive tried a few ways to write out the regex, but to no avail. Also, sometimes responseFromServer2 contains newlines, and sometimes it does not, depending on the response I get from the server...

View 2 RepliesI'm trying to make a hash calculator (For testing now)
I know that MD5 is a 1 way(Meaning that there is no decryption for it, yet)
now I was wondering if SHA-1 is a two way. Also, is there any other hashing method that are 2way?
reason is that I want to convert a long string (Lets say 550 chars) into something lower (From 550chars to something lower then 550chars)
I can use a Key, but every possibility will give me bigger length then the actual string.
I have a String with 15 places that I would like to split into 3 pieces: (First 3 digits), (next 3 digits), (remaining 9 digits).
How in VB2008 can I do that? Everything I have read so far indicates seperating by a certain character (ie: "," or " ") but no mention of character place. Seems like a simple thing, but after 2 hours of searching I'm still coming up empty
I am trying to update an Oracle Database record and i keep getting this error:
ORA-01704: string literal too long 5
I looked up that error and it seems that i have a limit of 4000 charters since i am using Oracle 10g. However, the prgblem is that its the same exact data i am putting back into that record so that is why i am unsure as to why its giving me that error for the same amount of data i took out of it.
Here is my update code:
Dim myCommand As New OracleCommand()
Dim ra As Integer

I'm pulling records from a db table (sybase) where I have run into a problem with a long varchar field. Using the OLEdb class I convert the field into a string variable which works fine in most cases, but there are problem with a few records. Examining the field in the database it shows that the value is not null, but the length of the field is 0.(SELECT field, length(field) FROM table). When I try to convert this into a string the result is rubbish.strContent = objReader.Item(i). I can't figure out what's the problem here, so I have avoided the issue by doing a table update before I start the process of getting data (I set the field value to null if field.length = 0
