May 20, 2012i would like to build an inventory manager application that would have two versions :1. Would run on the desktop 2. Would run on windows mobile 6 I would like to have both these versions store and read data from a database that can be stored centrally either on a webserver or somewhere on the LAN.
I would like to know can i use Access as my backend database or sql server ? will windows mobile app be able to access it and read and write to it Note : I would prefer to create only one database that will just store the details in the tables and do not need any other functionality. All functions such as save,edit,delete,search,filter etc with be done from the FRONT-END VB.NET interface ONLY If you suggestion involves the use of 2 databases such as one for desktop version and one for windows mobile then please also tell me how would i sync the data between them.

I am trying to use the same code that I use in the Compact Framework application. It compiles without errors and runs but when Invoking a function I get error ex = {"An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007000B)"} Is it possible to use the Mobile Unmanaged Dll on the Desktop ? Here is the Wrapper code I use to call the Dll:

Oct 29, 2010This is probably a pretty novice design question. I'm trying to work my way through a number of requirements and give the users the experience they're looking for.I've written a tool that does big calcluation-type things. It currently consists of a class library and command line tool (separate .NET projects.) We're using an Access database format as the file type because it can keep all the various tables together in one file. A few other items about the application: There are not many users. There are no concerns with scalability. There are not great concerns with updates. Desktop is desired. Not web.Using VB and .NET 3.5 SP1
I now need to develop a GUI front end that will allow typical File/Open and File/Save type operations.Users expect that they can open a file, edit it some, then either choose to save it or close it unsaved without any changes being written back to the file. Saving it would obviously save all changes affecting all tables back to the file.
Does it then make sense to use a temp file for something like a proxy then? To, when a user "opens" a file, copy the source Access file to a local temp file and then use that for the editing session? Then, if the user "saves", copy the local temp file back to the source path?
Update: [tagged with ms-access tag too] Also, I omitted the fact that users would expect typical File / Save As functionality too. I think the design I've put in question in this post is what is traditionally called the Proxy design pattern. Has anyone tried this (successfully!) with Access database files before? Words of caution or advice?
Can't Delete SQLCE Database Programmatically Because It Is Locked By Another Process
Oct 24, 2011I am having some issues with an application written in VB.net.
As part of a routine, an sqlce database gets backed up before the routine then if an error occurred gets restored. I am using system.io methods copy and delete.
I have released all the objects (connections, commands, datareaders) asscociated with the sqlce database by disposing them if they are not nothing. I also do a GC.COLLECT however when my delete command runs, an error message says it is open by another process. The PROCEXP.exe process explorer tool says it is attached to 4 undefined processes. After a while in debug mode, these clear and I am able to delete the file. However this is not acceptable as my program cannot "wait around" until they are released! I was under the impression that object.dispose forced an immediate disposal rather than waiting for the garbage collector to clean up (if you were just to use object=nothing), but still there appears to be a finite time before these objects are released.
My question is, is there an alternative way of checking (programatically in vb) for what is holding open an sqlce database (or in fact any other file for that matter) then killing these processes?

I would like it to sync with a larger database for updates that has not been made so i left it out but I have started to make a loop that would connect it to the larger DB and if connection failed would try a set number of times before stopping the program. Nov 10, 2009Im able to access the internet on my Phone. I made a small app that lets me get to my database hosted by Godaddy. The problem is, unless I have my phone plugged into my computer it says Im not connected to the network. I can show my code if needed, but that has nothing to do with it because the application works fine as long as its hooked to my computer. Any idea on establishing a connection I guess? Im not sure why its not since Im able to access the internet, Im not sure why connecting to the computer makes it work.

Jan 5, 2010I'm writing an application for a Windows Mobile phone in VB.Net, and I would like to read SMSs from the phone's memory. According to MSDN, the SMSAccount class is what I need:

However, the SMSAccount Class only has one interesting method, aka Send (see [URL], and I can't figure out how to access the actual messages.
I've found examples on the web which suggest to use the smsAccount.Inbox property, which I can't manage to find. I got this code for example :

Mar 3, 2010I'm designing a PC-based app that has a little local database. I'm using VB.NET with SQL Server Compact Edition. The user will only ever have access to one database file, because it's all about storing a user specific data. However I'm thinking of the situation where there could be multiple users that access the PC, each with their own Windows account. So ideally I'd need separate database files for each User.
I'm not sure how to implement this. I was hoping to deploy the 'empty' database as a ClickOnce deployment, but I can't see how I can have a database per user doing this. Also I'm not sure where to store the database files anyway. perhaps in MyDocuments for each user? Or perhaps I need to stick to just one database, but add a 'User' column into every table, so it can hold data for every user. I didn't want to do this though - because I wanted to keep the nice separation between the data offered by physically separate files.
