.net - Using MS Access Database As A File Format For Desktop Application Needing Open / Save Type Functionality?
Oct 29, 2010
This is probably a pretty novice design question. I'm trying to work my way through a number of requirements and give the users the experience they're looking for.I've written a tool that does big calcluation-type things. It currently consists of a class library and command line tool (separate .NET projects.) We're using an Access database format as the file type because it can keep all the various tables together in one file. A few other items about the application: There are not many users. There are no concerns with scalability. There are not great concerns with updates. Desktop is desired. Not web.Using VB and .NET 3.5 SP1
I now need to develop a GUI front end that will allow typical File/Open and File/Save type operations.Users expect that they can open a file, edit it some, then either choose to save it or close it unsaved without any changes being written back to the file. Saving it would obviously save all changes affecting all tables back to the file.
Does it then make sense to use a temp file for something like a proxy then? To, when a user "opens" a file, copy the source Access file to a local temp file and then use that for the editing session? Then, if the user "saves", copy the local temp file back to the source path?
Update: [tagged with ms-access tag too] Also, I omitted the fact that users would expect typical File / Save As functionality too. I think the design I've put in question in this post is what is traditionally called the Proxy design pattern. Has anyone tried this (successfully!) with Access database files before? Words of caution or advice?
Is it possible to use microsoft access database for Windows mobile application and save this mdb file locally in the pocket pc?because im trying to make an application to connect to mdb database but this imports seems to be not working.
We have a Windows Forms VB.NET application running on Windows Server 2008. Users access this app using Remote desktop. The app displays information in Excel, but Excel opens on the server. Is there a way for the .NET app to launch Excel on the users local desktop?
i want to open dds files using vb.net i know file format of dds..can some give me tutorial or a link to tutorial on how to declare file formats and then open and save them edit any format.
I have been using Visual Basic for about 2 weeks now so I know I am getting in over my head at this point, but times a factor. I have created a user form with around 100 User entered text boxes and pull down menus, tabbed pages etc. I can create a distributable file with no problem. However I cannot find any kind of example, tutorial, etc that will show me how to allow an end user to save the form as "enterfilenamehere.DCP" (for example) and then reopen any .dcp file created in my form application. The only examples and tutorials I can find are how to type text and save it as a txt. format. Could someone lend a complete novice some advice or point me in a good direction on where to learn about saving and opening custom file types? To clarify The user can use my form, But at this point has no way of saving and recalling what they entered in my form. It's a one time use only...not really what I want.
I work in an engineering design house and programming is not my actual profession. And I am relatively new to VB .net (previous i had worked in vb 6)
I am working on an in house application. I am coding a simple application in vb .net. This applications takes a few inputs from user and calculates a result. Now I want to implement a simple functionality that user should be able to save the input and results just like most of the windows programs can in a new file format. And user should be able to open the save file when desired.
I am trying to write a code to save and open data that is in my application. My application contains hundreds of text boxes, combo boxes and labels. I have created an array for each set of data, i.e.,
glist(0).store=combobox1.value glist(0).cat=combobox2.value glist(0).it=label3.text glist(0).quan=label4.text glist(0).total=label5.text up to glist(89).
Is there a way to write a code to loop through the array and save the values so that they can be opened at a later time in my application? The array will contain Doubles and Strings.
I recently came across a problem for image file storage in network.I have developed a desktop application. It runs in network. It has central database system. Users log in from their own computer in the network and do their job.Till now the database actions are going fine no problem. Users shares data from same database server.

I have downloaded and installed Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition today, as my hard drive that had Visual Basic 6.0 is getting old and was nearing the end of its life cycle. I have a new CPU as of yesterday.Anyway, now that I have Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition installed, I am working on converting the code from my Price is Right game to VB2008 Express code. When I used this code in 2008 Express...
Private Sub GetNames() Dim x As Integer, tmpstr As String, tmpstr2 As String, tmpstr3 As String, tmpstr4 As String, tmpstr5 As String, tmpstr6 As String, tmpstr7 As String, tmpstr8 As String, tmplng1 As Long, tmplng2 As Long, tmplng3 As Long, tmplng4 As Long, tmplng5 As Long, tmplng6
[code]....
I got a message saying "Open is not declared. File I/O functionality is available in the Microsoft.VisualBasic namespace."
There is a site that I go to that has a website chat thats located at the bottom of every page. It allows you to talk to specific people while you're online and they're online.
Sometimes when I get into a good conversation I don't want to end it. I still have other things to do though.I wanted to make a small window that I can just drag around that will allow me to chat with people easier.
I've set up pretty much everything in this program except the actual retrieving of the information from the site and the replying to the chat. I know I could do this (I've done similar things in the past) by putting an invisible webbrowser object off to the side and just run my stuff through there. But I think thats kind of sloppy.
I've read in some of my classes and books and have learned how to make simple web requests that return the results. In its case, I had to return definitions from google. I tried this on a recent project but found that it didn't the permission to access any kind of secured account whether it was logged in or not because it was "unsafe".
Does anybody know how to access a page thats been logged into through IE but without needing the sloppy methods I mentioned earlier?
I am trying to open an Access file but so far I am not succeeding. [Code] I receive following error: Cannot start your application. The workgroup information file is missing or opened exclusively by another user. I am sure the file is not open and I tried already to add in the connection string: ;User ID=User and / or Jet OLEDB:System database=C:SYSTEM.MDW; at the and but without result.
i use this command to open my ms access database file, but it is not working, what is the problem.... i learn this command from internet tutorials. [code]
What I am trying to do basically is open an access query in a datagrid view and then be able to make changes to the datagrid and then save it back to the database. When I try to save:
What I need is to have a specific file on my desktop open when I click a cell in my datagrid. In one of the columns in my datagrid I have a list of file pathways. I have a code that will open my file, but it is not specific:
Partial Class Database1DataSet Partial Class EMR_master_listDataTable Private Sub EMR_master_listDataTable_ColumnChanging(ByVal sender As System.Object,
[Code].....
This works just fine, but would I would like it to do is have the file path be whatever is specified in the cell.
I can save my data to access database and in the access database field I set it to date/time.But problem is when I get the value out from the database.. the format is always month/day/year hour:minutes:seconds example today: 5/2/2011 12:00:00..How to get the value into listview becoming May/2/2011 without the hour..Here's my code to get it from database ListView1.Items(i).SubItems.Add(dt.Rows(i)(14).ToString).The second problem is.When I would like to edit, how can the datetimepicker get the listview value ? [code] info: using access 2003 (.mdb) the Date of Birth field has been set into Date/Time.
I have never made a notepad like program just calculators and felt like learning how to link/find the parts to make save, open, format, and some other extras but I have NO code. I can't move on unless I know the parts needed and what the code for one of them is if I can link the save as button on the menu bar to the part needed to save I can figure the rest out besides the format that it saves in.
I'm new to this forum and new to programming (literally just a week or so). I'm trying to write a program that uses a combo box selection accompanied with a button that when pressed, will download a file off a website, save it to my desktop and the run itself.[code]The thing I want my code to do is to universally be able to save the file to the desktop of any windows OS a user may be using. I'm going to end up having people using XP, Vista and Win7 use this application and each of those I believe have a different root to reach the desktop. Instead of having to hard code each and every scenario, there must be an easier way, right? Can you guys help me figure out what the syntax is for getting the users windows username and desktop location so that no matter what OS they're using, the file will always be downloaded to their desktop?

Does anyone know how to capture (Record) the Windows desktop and save it as a '.avi' or '.mpg' file. This functionality can be done using screen capture / presentation programs like SnagIT:[URL]..I have found many examples showing how to capture from a webcam using the 'avicap32.dll' DLL file but these dont help with this problem.
If you are asking why i dont just use SnagIT its because the interface is overly complex and building my own version would allow me to intergrate it into my existing programs.
i would like to build an inventory manager application that would have two versions :1. Would run on the desktop 2. Would run on windows mobile 6 I would like to have both these versions store and read data from a database that can be stored centrally either on a webserver or somewhere on the LAN.
I would like to know can i use Access as my backend database or sql server ? will windows mobile app be able to access it and read and write to it Note : I would prefer to create only one database that will just store the details in the tables and do not need any other functionality. All functions such as save, edit, delete, search, filter etc with be done from the FRONT-END VB.NET interface ONLY If you suggestion involves the use of 2 databases such as one for desktop version and one for windows mobile then please also tell me how would i sync the data between them.
